As an off--the-charts fan of the Blue Nile, to even conceive to take on a one of the most beautiful love songs of the last 50 years, not just by the band, but by any artist....and stand upright against the original and land where KEANE does here?! Courageous and absolutely one of the best cover songs I've heard in years. Here's why: it makes me appreciate the original even more and love this version as much.
@@patrickmcveigh9301 as a matter of fact, it is, but that has exactly zero to do with the fact that keane is the literal incarnation of meh, right up there with coldplay, radiohead, REM, katy perry, billie eyelash, etc
I don't care what people say, but for more than 8 years I have observed that ONLY Keane has enough passion for music to take a song and turn it into an amazing new hymn....... I am also blown away by how Tom's voice & Tim's piano are getting more powerful with time...... for me, a new Keane era is beginning and a lot of people in the music industry will have to swallow their past words.........
Really lovely…. A fabulous balance achieved in putting their identity into a truly blessed song whilst paying respect to absolute majesty of the original .. It’s one of the best things about The Blue Nile. The Melodies, sound and words are so painstakingly and generously crafted as to allow the listener their own personal piece of gold within, and then sing it with that meaning. Well done Keane
Paul Buchanan is the one that got away from stardom, truly. He composed some of the most beautiful songs of the 80s and they gave him nothing in return.
Hearing this song immediately brings me back to one of my high school dance. I was looking at the girl I have been hoping to dance with for years. But I never had the guts to approach her and ask. Just looking at her until the song ends.
wow, I've been a fan of the blue nile for decades, and frankly, I came here to bash this cover, but I was blown away by the singer, not so much by the instrumental arrangement, but the singer is phenomenal, I think paul buchanan would approve of this
One of my favorite songs ever. KEANE - I always thought you were underrated (Live 8 show was amazing) so I'm not surprised you killed it but you did. Best cover of Blue Nile I've ever heard.
It is not necessary to be equal to the original, because we have the original, it is important feeling and pain in the interpretation and this is what makes Keane in Tom's voice.
Until 20 minutes ago i didn't know others had even covered this song by The Blue Nile. Just listened to Rod Stewart's and Annie Lennox's versions.....they were just about ok. None, including this has the dramatic sound of the original but fair play to them for covering a great tune.
Nothing comes close to the heartbreak emotional feel of the original, but having said that, this is far far better than the rod stewart or annie lennox versions
Never knew they covered such a band but it's funny how the handful of your most memorable bands all seem to interlink at some point in the proceedings. The Blue Nile were a one off mind you.ps i do wonder about the date on this one. He looks more like the 2005 version of himself.
Sometimes I walk away When all I really wanna do Is love and hold you right There is just one thing I can say Nobody loves you this way It's alright, can't you see? The downtown lights In love we're all the same We're walking down an empty street And with nobody, call your name Empty streets, empty nights The downtown lights How do I know you'll feel it? How do I know you'll feel it? How do I know you'll feel it? How do I know it's true? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, it's alright Tonight and every night Let's go walking down this empty street Let's walk in the cool evening light Wrong or right, be at my side The downtown lights It will be alright It will be alright The downtown lights Yeah, yeah How do I know you'll feel it? How do I know you'll feel it? How do I know you'll feel it? How do I know it's true? It's alright It's alright The downtown lights Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah Yeah, yeah How do I know you'll feel it? How do I know you'll feel it? How do I know you'll feel it? How do I know it's true? Yeah, yeah, yeah The downtown lights The neon's and the cigarettes Rented rooms or rented cars The crowded streets, the empty bars Chimney tops and trumpets The golden lights, the loving prayers The colored shoes, the empty trains I'm tired of crying on the stairs The downtown lights Yeah, yeah Yeah, yeah
A choirboy that hasn't ever known love. I do really like some Keane songs, but only when they're singing about innocence, and not experience. Blue Nile/Paul Buchanan sings about experience. There is no pain in this version.
Maybe a tad condescending! Of course Tom hasn't experienced the same things as Paul. Those are Paul's lyrics so obviously are the most meaningful and personal to him. Tom has had his fair share of personal trials... as the emotion in his own songs shows. Can they not just enjoying paying tribute to a great band and great song?

I’m a lifelong TBN fan too...Keane have made a bloody good job but it just isn’t Paul...
Because Keane is honest and very good at their craft.
They do it justice
The best 👍
you should check out Lucia and The Best Boys cover of this song! So good!
Possibly the greatest song ever written.
That … and so many others of The Blue Nile x
I couldn’t choose a favourite Blue Nile song There are so many gems across four wonderful albums
The guts you have to even think of taking on this treasure but then to pull it off, amazing.
I loved the Blue Nile original when I was in college .... but WOW....what a thing of beauty this cover is.
I agree
MASSIVELY AGREE 👍👍👍👍
meh its ok, no character
@@rickdeckard1075 ok - let’s hear your version and it’s gotta be better than ‘meh’ - right?

Well done Keane
Of course, who else would cover such an iconic, stunning 80s song.
I just love both so much !
Paul Buchanan is the one that got away from stardom, truly.
He composed some of the most beautiful songs of the 80s and they gave him nothing in return.
Not only that, he had a really, really good tenor voice as well. Beautiful timbre.
Blue Nile one of the best groups ever. This song and tinsel town in the rain are unbelievably beautiful.
Absolutely amazing cover. It is captivating.
Not normally a fan of bands doing cover, but this one is exceptional.
This is absolutely beautiful. ❤❤❤❤
SO SO BEAUTIFUL . WELL DONE
Such a moving song. Beautifully covered by Keane.
Hearing this song immediately brings me back to one of my high school dance. I was looking at the girl I have been hoping to dance with for years. But I never had the guts to approach her and ask. Just looking at her until the song ends.
Thank you Keane, for another jewel ❤ you are my life's soundtrack
His voice sound perfect pitch and clear here. Best of tom
Beautiful
Tom’s voice is so beautiful
💯
Magnificent version of a magnificent song. Blue Nile would approve in a heartbeat!!!
Best Blue Nile cover I've heard, from someone who didnt like Keane - really lovingly done. thanks Keane
In that case be sure to check out him covering The Show Must Go On by Queen - you'll find it here on TH-cam. Incredible!
This is simply gorgeous
you have a very pure voice. Don't ever smoke. Take it from a musician that's been playing since I was 16, I'm 54 now. You have a very good voice,
wow, I've been a fan of the blue nile for decades, and frankly, I came here to bash this cover, but I was blown away by the singer, not so much by the instrumental arrangement, but the singer is phenomenal, I think paul buchanan would approve of this
keane made a wonderful cover, Tom Chaplin's voice is unique.
same, what a great vocal performance
Best cover of this song I’ve heard.
One of my favorite songs ever. KEANE - I always thought you were underrated (Live 8 show was amazing) so I'm not surprised you killed it but you did. Best cover of Blue Nile I've ever heard.
Breathtaking!
Beautiful voice
two of my fave bands the blue nile and keane . they cover this song so well . they have done it justice ! bliss !
You can tell they’re fans. Exquisite.
Hats the Blue Nile is one of Keane's favorite albums, says Tom Chaplin
The best song I've seen Keane perform ever. They fell short on phrasing and melody, but a vey honest attempt.
Are you sure, since the vocal is an exact replica of MrBuchanan's.
I think you fell short on being a complete pretentious douche.
Gorgeous take on this classic. Great job!
The blue Nile are very underrated they were a very good group
Fantastic rendition. Crisp and clean.
Oh my god, this is probably the best cover I've ever seen in my life. So beautiful..
Tom Chaplin's voice is unique.
Hats by the Blue Nile is a great album. One of my favorites.
Best cover of this classic!!
A great song is forever.
Beautiful. Truly!
still… by FAR the best cover version EVER!
So beautiful. I can't stop listening to it.
Yeah, best cover but there is no one who can match the passion and perfection of Paul Buchanan's vocals.
I agree and adore paul b.
But i have him at number 3...david sylvian n brian ferry being tops
It is not necessary to be equal to the original, because we have the original, it is important feeling and pain in the interpretation and this is what makes Keane in Tom's voice.
Ana D Fernandes 💚
Actually a beautiful cover thank u Keane respected the song but made it ur own.... Not easy x
Loved the cover and loved the original. Love for both artists ♥️
Thank You so much!!! Brilliant!!!

Lovely voice this fella has
His name is Tom Chaplin.💗 Great singer.💗
Stunning cover 👌🏻
Muy buen cover. También sugiero escuchen la de aniie Lennox
Wow !!!...., further than lovely…, I haven´t heard this Keane´s versión, untill now, and I am so moved.

Bravo!
I grew up listening to Rod's version, then discovered Keane, then discovered the original Blue Nile version, then discovered this. Wonderful
Very good? No! The Blue Nile were stratospherically brilliant.

You need to listen to Lucia & The Best Boys version - simply top drawer
Oh YES!!! :))
Thank you Nadya for watching! :)
Im glad they covered a beautifull song..nice vocals but a long way off the jaw dropping voice of paul buchannon.
Boss.
Damn
Very nice. Great job. Piano a bit loud in the mix IMO.
Thanks for the cover....but Paul Buchanan voice is near on impossible to beat....maybe David sylvian from the group Japan
David Sylvian would be interesting. This Keane cover, frankly, is not cutting it for me. The lead singer does not "feel it."
@@catherinehart5949 totally agree.....buchanan,sylvian,ferry .....difficult to beat.
👏👏👏
I just happened to come across this. He has a nice smooth yet powerful voice. I like Annie Lennox's version better. A plus though
I love Keane but the original is still the best you won’t beat Paul Buchanan singing this.
A choirboy that hasn't ever known love. I do really like some Keane songs, but only when they're singing about innocence, and not experience.
Blue Nile/Paul Buchanan sings about experience. There is no pain in this version.
only tom could sound as nearly as good as paul buchanan.i cry every time i hear this sweet tune.
Now now, that sweet face and clear tenor say "innocence," those skinny jeans say "experience."
andreasegde, There is emotion and pain is a very good cover.
