Get up early enough to allow time for breakfast. Most important meal of the day. With a good breakfast you can skip lunch.
Handful of nuts and drink of water or coffee with petrol for the bike, and away you go..
    Happy travels, eventually..

I like to skip breakfast. At the first stop after 1.5 or 2 hours I have quick breakfast, than after another 2 hours at the next stop I have already 300 km done.

When I ride alone and stay at hotel - I find the ones with good breakfast included. eating a large breakfast means at 8 means I can ride from 9 to 2 wilth out eating again. Not only do I save time but it I use the time to mentally organized my day worth of riding. a mid afternoon snack and a cool drink give me time to figure out where I want to spend the night. I begin to look for places at that point. No alcohol or beer until I get off the bike for the day.

We are about to buy a Citroen 2CV to go travelling, my wife and 1..and a dog named Boo. These tips of yours are very useful for that. I think we can sleep in the car, but will take a tent to...I am 71 years old, the car 35. We have a Vivaro campervan and travel light with that too. Been following you for years, thanks.

That's the great thing when sleeping outside - you start to adapt to the circadian rhythm of nature - after a few days it feels natural to get up at 5 o'clock together with the first birds starting their calls and go to sleep at 8 or 9 in the evening after the sun went down.

Tip Number 7 is SOO IMPORTANT: You can ride with a buddy around the town for years on motorcycles and everything is ok. But when you decide to go for a thousand kilometeres away and find out he can't handle the driving pressure and starts to whine or behave inadequate THAT'S WHEN THINGS GET SCARY. A person who can't handle HIS OWN sense is like a luggage without a handle and you have to become a shrink just to finish the trip... proven!

The coffee tip is a great tip! I don't drink coffee, but on long days, as I sense fatigue is coming, I will seek out a small iced coffee drink.
I, when I have to do ~1000 miles in one day, try to leave before 4AM, with no breakfast. If I leave at 4am, and stop for breakfast at about 10AM i've already put in half a days riding, and I still have the rest of the day to pound out the miles. I've done this numerous times; Los Angeles to Seattle. Phoenix to Dallas. Dallas to Phoenix. Phoenix to San Francisco. Seattle to Salt Lake City. Los Angeles to Denver. Dallas to Cincinnati. Phoenix to Los Angeles via Four Corners and Las Vegas. Etc
I avoid energy drinks and sugary drinks. I stick to water, and about every third stop i'll drink half a small gatorade.
I think it goes without saying that good, comfortable, adaptable gear is *really* important. I'd rather be slightly hot but not have to stop if it rains, than wear my much cooler mesh gear, then have to stop to put on a rain suit if it rains.
Ear plugs and ibuprofen. Take the ibuprofen before you need to. I need to take it by 14 hours latest, sometimes as early as twelve, so I take it at 10 hours.
Stand up for a few minutes every hour.
Efficient stops; petrol, bio, water, go. My stops are generally 6 minutes. But I plan one 30 minute stop (breakfast) and one 1 hour stop (get off the bike, lie down, eat, online, chat, whatever) at about 14- 16 hours.
All the above allow you to stay on your bike longer, cover distance better.

  • @grahamsmith4988
    @grahamsmith4988 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

All very helpful Pavlin. To negate the need to skip breakfast, dont plan to ride so far every day! We are on a journey to enjoy the trip so 'passage planning' your distances with a calculated average speed makes more sense. I would recommend a light breakfast, muesli and yogurt for instance, and a pint (500ml) of WARM water. Coffee is a diuretic and will make you want to stop for a piss when you really want to keep going. Holding your bladder is not good, neither are kidney stones so drink only water with mineral supplements. Eat plenty of fruit during petrol stops and energy bars if you can buy them. Do some stretching before and after your ride, avoid cramps. Like you, I could go on forever! Stay Safe.

I totally agree about having an early start and eating light, while i was traveling in the Himalayas, i would try to bring some fruits and nuts for the road, then in the evening i would stop at guest house, have nice dinner when possible, then go for a walk, buy some more fruits for the next day's trip, and so on

I cannot thank you enough for the hydration pack. I got the one you recommended earlier, the one from source, and it's just great. I got the 3L one, and on the hot days, I fill it up with 2L of water at almost every stop. At temperatures around 40, I drink 10-13 liters of water a day but I am much less tired than my riding friends.

Great tips in this video! I think the #1 thing riders fail to do is to properly hydrate. If hydration level is wrong . . . everything else will be 'off'. Alertness, reaction time, energy level to name a few. Your comment to take a sip or two every 10 minutes is SPOT ON. I used to guzzle a pint or 2 of water/gatorade every 100 - 150 miles at my gas stop when traveling the Mojave or Death Valley or Arizona. But I would pee it all out at the next gas stop. Then a friend taught me to sip every 10 minutes on the clock on my bike dash. That changed everything! Less peeing, better hydration and comfort level. Just had to learn to make a habit of looking at the clock on the dashboard. Every 10, on the 10, at least one sip. Much easier to regulate thirst and sweat and peeing.

about water pouches, one could buy a pouch that fits the back pocket that most adventure jackets have and so you don't have to carry an extra backpack that keeps warm on the back and might block the ventilation of the jacket. It's a bit tricky to find a horizontal pouch since most of them are vertical and it might need a hose replacement with a longer one, especially for taller people, but I think it's worth it

I appreciate the thought and time you put into these presentations - very thorough. I can relate to riding with a proven partner. For the most part I have traveled alone for the past 12 years. It's easier and you meet more locals too. I always have my hydration pack. My latest is a 4lt. It's great for trekking too. Starting early is great advice no matter what you have planned for the day. Less traffic, see the world come awake and before you know it you've covered 100 plus kilometres before 8.00am. Love your work Pavlin.

I think the point about taking in salt on the days when it is necessary to drink lots of water is really important, and often overlooked. Drinking too much water can cause a condition called hyponatraemia, in which the level of sodium in the blood plasma falls dangerously. The condition can be mistaken for dehydration. The treatment is salty food.

Big meal at the end of the day and additionally with a beer isn't a very good and smart advice - your body need to work hard to digest food and if its a lot of it or heavy then this process last longer and when you sleep you want to rest after hard day driving - big or heavy meal going to make your body work most of the night instead of resting ! Same with alcohol - to process alcohol body is working very hard - if you drink before going to sleep don't expect to rest properly !!

My regime of choice is start with a coffee to clear the head, start early, turn on the IPod for some podcasts or tunes.
Make sure I have plenty water in the hydration pack and cruise along at the speed limit, at this speed I have less chance of fatigue and will use less fuel than going faster meaning less stops for fuel, and less chance of being pulled by the boys in blue to spend 20 minutes listening to them telling me of the dangers of speeding.
Staying relaxed is the key in my opinion.
Always enjoy your feast of food for thought Pavlin.
