As Wikipedia notes, "Based on the Faust legend, the series starred Paul Shaffer and Greg Evigan as two struggling musicians who make a pact with the son of the devil for a year of success. A Year at the Top also stars Nedra Volz, Priscilla Morrill, Gabriel Dell, and Julie Cobb. Mickey Rooney guest-starred on the pilot episode. The series aired for only five episodes before being canceled by CBS in September 1977."

A review book I have said that this looked like a fantasy skit Paul Shaffer would have done on Letterman, but it was all too real. And no one can explain why the network thought this was a good idea. The series didn't even last a year, but Greg and Paul did kinda make it to the top, right? And without requiring a deal with the Devil, but Greg did have to deal with Sheriff Lobo. 😂

After watching these promos, this seem like Norman Lear's weirdest show (weirder than Hot L Baltimore, All That Glitters, Mary Hartman Mary Hartman, and Fernwood Tonight).

At the same time Paul's series here was airing as a CBS summer replacement (August 1977), Dave was receiving his first national exposure as a regular on the Starland Vocal Band show (another CBS summer replacement series!)

More great stuff from the Steve Albert Collection! Boston doesn't have anyone like you guys preserving it's TV HISTORY like you do for Chicago, so the stuff from that collection might be the ONLY 1970's Boston TV History material around! Keep on Postin' it! :)
