    Fascinating - I've lived in London for 60 years and worked in Fleet Street and I never knew any of this. Thanks

    The Holborn Viaduct has never crossed the River Fleet, the river was covered underground by the mid 1700s. Construction of Holborn Viaduct started around 1860s. There was originally a bridge that crossed The Fleet near the same spot, called the Holborn Bridge.

      That's right, the river was considered a nuisance due to the flooding and sewage. The fleet was covered over in parts, the last part was from where the Regent's canal is and the part leading towards Hampstead Heath. The Fleet was incorporated into Joseph Bazalgettes sewage system and now conveys raw sewage and rain water and is intercepted by the high level,mid level and low level interceptor sewers that take it to the Beckton treatment works, if its overwhelmed it overflows into the parallel flood relief which is deeper than the fleet and they discharge into the Thames which should hopefully stop. Someone has been down into the Fleet and filmed it and uploaded it onto TH-cam by the user name Valdigger

    Wow this must be the best video about the Fleet I've watched. The bit where you show the Agas map is just brilliant. Thanks!

    I used to work in a building on Fleet Street with multiple basements on several levels. If one was in the deepest basement the sound of the water running through the fleet river/sewer could be heard quite clearly!

    That part were the fleet runs threw a overground sewer pipe in tufnell pk, used to be a racecourse, and horses were kept in stables, which are now town houses, which also housed the workers, used to be a marshy area

    Near to where you were on Ray Street, the what-is-now-Thameslink line dives under the Metropolitan and up the other side, via a structure known informally as the Ray Street Gridiron. What is less well known is that the culverted River Fleet traverses above in a big pipe. So it's a railway, under a railway, under a river, under a road, which is kinda neat.

    Ah, the Cow of Destiny 🐄 I'm almost tempted to request you do a video on that, Andrew - but then again, given people rarely even mention London these days without going on and on about the CoD, what more is there to add 🤷‍♂️? Great video as always!

    Next door neighbour to the underground postal railway in that area too, the river passes the sorting office and Postal Museum (my workplace) a short distance away at Mount Pleasant. I've walked passed that pub, and over that grill, many times, never once realising that its the Fleet. Will keep an ear out for it next time I'm passing.

      You're not the chap that gave me the walking tour of the Mail Rail tunnels by any chance? I recorded most of this walking back to Farringdon from that excellent day out, after accidentally finding the drain that I hadn't bothered looking for up until then.

    • @LynxEE20
      @LynxEE20 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ExploringLondon I am that chap, yes. I had a feeling you may have filmed this on the same day, few other reasons to be in that area of London. The best things are often found by chance though.

    Nice snippet loaded with pertinent information about the Fleet. Sad to think they buried it to become a sewer, and that by doing that they condemned it to carry human waste into the Thames. Think of all the Cholera epidemics this contributed to but, what can you say they didn't have a clue about germs or waterborne pathogens. Again nice informative.

    Its not a river, its a sewer. It conveys raw sewage and rain water and it is intercepted 3 times therefore the water doesnt run from the top to the thames. only a trickle of water actually comes from Hampstead Heath and it has been diverted as well. The fleet sewer and the flood relief enter the Thames only when the sewer overflows mostly when it rains, if you see the fleet discharging into the Thames, it is a bad thing. Thats the reason you dont see the fleet constantly discharging. The thames tideway sewer will fix this problem and you will rarely see the fleet going into the Thames

    A correction to you, listening to the river fleet that is not the manhole. The river runs Stand Farrington Road the reason why I know is I have walked the fleet many times that’s how I know I am a sewer worker Best regards, still interested
