I’m planning a hop yard in MT and would like to compare the cost/benefit of metal vs wood poles. Local sourced wood poles are lodge pole pine, a very soft wood, treating them would eliminate organic certification. Hard wood poles from the East would be cost prohibitive. Metal might be a good alternative. Where did you source the metal poles, any other lessons learned would be appreciated
I sourced mine from a local farmer at $70 CAD per 22 foot wooden pole. You could save costs on concrete and stuff like they used if you use Square bolts to hold the wire at the crosses and then clamp it to the post similar to a traditional ginseng garden you can then regauge it and adjust.

Do you have draws or details to share on the tricky things that change everything? I live in France, in the Alpes mountains and we are kind of backward on small scale and organic hop growing issues! I would be very grateful if you could share a few things ;) Thanks
8 acres would be a huge farm. Do some research first to see what hops will grow in that area- (cooler, wetter climate with a shoter grow season) You won't see any real yields in your first year, and minimal in the second. If you have a university with an AG program near you, you might want to reach out to them to see if any research on hop farmiong that area has been done.

Also personally i'd never want put concrete into the soil in case i wanted to use the land for something else down the road.
