I saw tons of thanos edits on tt. Each edits got millions of views and liked. And I enjoy every bits of those edits. I like him in sg2 because he's funny but sometimes I didn't like it when he's a bully. But when I saw thanos edits, my like towards him has increased.
The issue here is the reality the actor has a lot of experience in front of a camera from being in a boy band. He is the only character that expresses emotions other than worry and concern, he is going to stand out, and the purple hair makes him stand out more. Its a fully flushed out character from the start, we are introduced to him with his picture, then the push, he shows us who he is. Also brilliant camera work behind that reveal. He speaks English which to a Korean audience tells them he is a little disrespectful punk, people can't understand him and he doesn't care.
Korean media really loves to sprinkle in moments of wholesomeness or comedy before a tragedy to truly bring out the misery later. It's why I found Squid Game so entertaining with the characters just interacting and talking to one another. Characters this time around seemed so fleshed out and grounded, that I honestly couldn't believe that it was the same show.
Being Korean, I realize non Koreans miss so much bc they don't understand Korean culture. The fact that you call the group "friends" misses the communal nature of the group. Why they are looking out for each other and the dynamics is more than friendship. The older players looking out for the younger individuals, the respect younger player have for the older, its closer to family. The grandmother offering to feed them when they get out means so much when their parents are not alive. The disrespect towards older players goes beyond factions to the core of being a community. The language that is used, in term of polite form and non polite form. If westerners like it so much now, imagine what it could be if they understood the nuances. The drugs use, Thanos's behavior, would have been noticed if you understood how drug use is not common in Korea. Also, knowing who the actors are helps too. If you see Tom Hanks, or Tom Cruise on screen vs a nobody, you immediately know who to pay attention to. The captain of the boat for example is a famous actor so you would suspect something before it happens.

I saw a video about the translations in season one where they explained how Sang Woo asked Ali to call him "hyung" but in english it was simply translated as "call me by my name." Knowing he was basically saying " big bro where are you?" at the end of the marbles game makes it even sadder Or the part where that deok su guy questioned the crazy lady for calling him "oppa" he said something like "Oppa.. Are you sure you about that ?" Implying she was older 😂😂 but in english oppa is just translated as " babe" in the subtitles
In a vid where the cast were reacting to the pentathlon game, the frontmans actor said that the director told him to portray his character in a way where he genuinely finds himself having fun and deep down hoping Gi-hun is right. The actor did an amazing job because his happiness felt so real when he was cheering and etc. Thanos was already my favorite due to his over the top nature when I first watched the show. Also because he was high the whole time I really felt like he had such childlike fun when playing the games like he couldn't comprehend the danger of death. He wasn't all there because he kicked his fan out during mingle but then a couple seconds later he is crying wondering what happened to him. I was shocked when I rewatched the scenes where we first saw him because he was so calm and grounded compared to after the girl he liked died so to calm his nerves and make it he kept taking the drugs. (I watched breaking bad recently and I felt the gravity of situations and cried despite the memes so I love them because they don't ruin the enjoyment of the show for me)
I thought it was sweet how they were cheering people on during the four legged race... even though they knew that with the more that survived, the less money they win.
I thought so too but I feel like the first cheers wasn't entirely because they were happy for them but I think it's because they had hope that it is possible to win the game as the prior teams all ended up dying

He initially rose the ranks by being a real player that won. He joined because he needed money for his wife that had cirrhosis and was pregnant. She passed away before he could help her.
I 100% felt the same exact way. When I watched that scene and saw those two being clowns I did not think that was funny at all, Thanos initially annoyed the crap out of me and after seeing that scene again on instagram my entire view on him as a character changed. He really added color to the season

This is exactly what happened to me. During the watch I hated him. My thirst thought though was that I would like him but he is such an annoying and rude character. He had his funny moments but still he was irritating. But when I see him in Tik Tok edints out of context he becomes more funny. I don't know how it works
I also think that the context has a huge impact. When you each show and do not know what comes next, you are stressed, worryed for characters, worried for what will happened and so on. But the same moment will be different without the atmosphere the show created previously. It loses the power and significance of the moment without emotional connection and context
