  • The Gulf War (2 August 1990 - 28 February 1991), codenamed Operation Desert Shield (2 August 1990 - 17 January 1991) for operations leading to the buildup of troops and defense of Saudi Arabia and Operation Desert Storm (17 January 1991 - 28 February 1991) in its combat phase, was a war waged by coalition forces from 35 nations led by the United States www.vidypedia.com/post/united... against Iraq in response to Iraq's invasion and annexation of Kuwait arising from oil pricing and production disputes.
On 2 August 1990, the Iraqi Army invaded and occupied Kuwait, which was met with international condemnation and brought immediate economic sanctions against Iraq by members of the UN Security Council. UK www.vidypedia.com/post/united... prime minister Margaret Thatcher and US President George H. W. Bush www.vidypedia.com/post/george... deployed forces into Saudi Arabia, and urged other countries to send their own forces to the scene. An array of nations joined the coalition, forming the largest military alliance since World War II www.vidypedia.com/post/world-... . Most of the coalition's military forces were from the US, with Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom and Egypt as leading contributors, in that order. Kuwait and Saudi Arabia paid around US$32 billion of the US$60 billion cost.
The war marked the introduction of live news broadcasts from the front lines of the battle, principally by the US network CNN. The war has also earned the nickname Video Game War after the daily broadcast of images from cameras on board U.S. bombers during Operation Desert Storm.
The initial conflict to expel Iraqi troops from Kuwait began with an aerial and naval bombardment on 17 January 1991, continuing for five weeks. This was followed by a ground assault on 24 February. This was a decisive victory for the coalition forces, who liberated Kuwait and advanced into Iraqi territory. The coalition ceased its advance and declared a ceasefire 100 hours after the ground campaign started. Aerial and ground combat was confined to Iraq, Kuwait, and areas on Saudi Arabia's border. Iraq launched Scud missiles against Israel and coalition targets in Saudi Arabia.

They knew in 1991 that they could drive the Iraqis out of Kuwait, but they were also aware that they could not defeat Iraq completely, that's why they stopped in 1991 and after 12 years of sanctions attacked Iraq a second time, which was already so weakened by the sanctions that they relatively quickly walked to Baghdad. Why did they need Iraq and why did they attack Saddam in '91, who was an American ally until a few years earlier? It was all part of the plan to enter Iran's backyard. Everyone forgets that the Gulf War of 1991 was not the first Gulf War, but the second after the Iraq-Iran war that ended in a stalemate in 1989. In the Iraq-Iran war, Saddam was an American ally and received weapons from the West. After the revolution of 1979, Iran became an American obsession, so the Americans incited Saddam to attack Iran as a proxy (just like today they are at war with the Russians through Ukraine). When they realized that Iraq was not capable of defeating Iran even with the support of the West, they overthrew Saddam to get a base in Iraq from which they could attack Iran by land themselves. Without land access from Iraq, they were condemned to air interventions and amphibious landings (an extremely difficult task in itself, which is even more difficult than usual due to Iran's geography). That is why America needs Iraq as a land base towards Iran. Because of all this, it will be interesting to follow what will happen with this Iraqi government, which recently asked US troops to withdraw from Iraq, I assume that in a soft or hard way, they will be replaced by a government that will be more friendly and that will stop demanding withdrawal of US troops from Iraq.
