The reason that Gandalf is a little confused about being called Gandalf is because it had been lifetimes and countless years since he'd been called that name. His original name is Olorin and it's likely the one used when he died; it's sorta like having a nickname someone used for you from ages 6-8 and then someone brings up that nickname when you're, like, 95 years old.

I'm glad you recognized the depth that Gondor scene added to Boromir's story. He was the golden child - always made his father proud. And yet he was still willing to go against his father's wishes and accompany the ring to be destroyed. He grew up next to Mordor and saw first hand what Sauron's forces did to people. He fell to weakness, but it was always out of a desire to protect his home.

He served at the battle of Somme, which is one of the worst warfare there ever has been. no-man's-land filled with half liquified corpses, locust and rats feeding on your fallen friends, etc. This epic has a lot of depictions about PTSD in general since Tolkein was the survivor of The War to End All Wars.

I believe there is a point in the books where Samwise is tempted by the ring, but it just flat out fails.
If I recall it tempts him with like a vision of the whole world as a garden that tends itself, and Sam's just like "But tending the garden is the fun part."

    • @Frelzor
      @Frelzor ปีที่แล้ว +134

He is tempted, but ultimately he snaps out of it when he realizes that Frodo needs him. This is just after a couple of days with the Ring, however, and Tolkien has pretty much confirmed that even Samwise would lose to the Ring eventually.

Wild fantasies arose in his mind; and he saw Samwise the Strong, Hero of the Age, striding with a flaming sword across the darkened land, and armies flocking to his call as he marched to the overthrow of Barad-dur. And then all the clouds rolled away, and the white sun shone, and at his command the vale of Gorgoroth became a garden of flowers and trees and brought forth fruit. He had only to put on the Ring and claim it for his own, and all this could be.”

It's actually interesting that Sam is repeatedly stated early on in the books as having grown up enthralled by Bilbos stories, and actually begged him to teach him to read so he could read Bilbos translations of the tales of the heros of Men and Elves.
He grew up wanting to be in those stories, and probably pictured himself as a hero in them.
But then grew up and came to find joy and appreciation in gardening like his father.

A woman is an adult female human. Prior to adulthood, a female human is referred to as a girl (a female child or adolescent). Denoting the sex that can bear offspring or produce eggs, distinguished biologically by the production of gametes (ova) which can be fertilized by male gametes. Women inherit a pair of X chromosomes from their parents, and are capable of pregnancy and giving birth from puberty until menopause. More generally, sex differentiation of the female fetus is governed by the lack of a present, or functioning, SRY-gene on either one of the respective sex chromosomes. Female anatomy is distinguished from male anatomy by the female reproductive system, which includes the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, vagina, and vulva. The adult female pelvis is wider, the hips broader, and the breasts larger than that of adult males. Women have significantly less facial and other body hair, have a higher body fat composition, and are on average shorter and less muscular than men.
A man is an adult male human.
Prior to adulthood, a male human is referred to as a boy (a male child or adolescent).
Like most other male mammals, a man's genome inherits an X chromosome from the mother and a Y chromosome from the father. Sex differentiation of the male fetus is governed by the SRY gene on the Y chromosome.
The male reproductive system contains the external genitals (the penis, testes and the scrotum) and internal parts, including the prostate gland, vas deferens and urethra.
During puberty, hormones which stimulate androgen production result in the development of secondary sexual characteristics, thus exhibiting greater differences between the sexes. These include greater muscle mass, height, the growth of facial hair and a lower body fat composition.

The full speech Sam gives at the stone window was not in the book (they don’t even go to Osgiliath in the book) and wasn’t in the original shooting script. The beginning and end were shot on set, but the middle with the montage was added during post production. Sean Astin absolutely killed it with his delivery in any case, it is the beating heart of this movie. “That there’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo. And it’s worth fighting for.” Perfect, can’t be topped. Can’t say enough that the third movie is going to absolutely wreck you if the first two had you hooked this much… and I can’t wait to see it. He gave them rest and shelter before they moved on, his only motive being to help them. And he knew well that these actions would almost definitely cause him death by his father because of Denethor’s rules and greed for the power of the ring, but he carried on helping them regardless. In the Tolkien mythology, Gandalf is Istari, or basically an angel. You notice in the books, he doesn't really fight "for" the other characters except against other supernatural creatures, he assists in their battles but primarily guides them. This is deep stuff and Tolkien wrote these books along Christian themes. Harry Potter are cute books and I read them to my children, but Tolkien is truly on another level. Remember, they copied him, not just J.K. Rowling but almost every modern fantasy author borrows in some way from Tolkien's work.

What makes the LOTR films (and books) stand apart from others is that the story is not just an adventure. It has themes that resonate so deeply with us because they MATTER. You have characters facing a very certain doom, but they do so willingly because they know the world will fall if they don't. They fight for their homes, their families, their people, their kingdoms, all for the hope that they can vanquish evil forever. it's such a real, almost basic sense of responsibility, and it's not just for the soldiers. That's why the author of the books chose hobbits to be the center of the tale, because hobbits represent the everyday person: not kings, not soldiers, but people who enjoy the comforts of home and their mundane lives. As the books and movies say, "even the smallest person can change the course of the future". It's so powerful, knowing that even people as insignificant and weak as us can be a part of something bigger than ourselves, and make a difference.

Theoden always felt he had a lot to live up to when compared to the former kings of Rohan. The horn in Helm's Deep was to warn the enemy that Helm Hammerhand, 9th King of Rohan, was going to take the field. He was known for his great strength and beating his enemies with his bare hands. He would go out by himself, clad in white, and stalk like a snow-troll into the camps of his enemies, and slay many men with his hands. It was believed that if he bore no weapon no weapon would bite on him. The Dunlendings said that if he could find no food he ate men. That tale lasted long in Dunland.
[2758-2759 III, the Siege of the Hornburg:]
Helm had a great horn, and soon it was marked that before he sallied forth he would blow a blast upon it that echoed in the Deep; and then so great a fear fell on his enemies that instead of gathering to take him or kill him they fled away down the Coomb.
One night men heard the horn blowing, but Helm did not return. In the morning there came a sun-gleam, the first for long days, and they saw a white figure standing still on the Dike, alone, for none of the Dunlendings dared come near. There stood Helm, dead as a stone, but his knees were unbent. Yet men said that the horn was still heard at times in the Deep and the wraith of Helm would walk among the foes of Rohan and kill men with fear.

The one gripe I still cling to after all these years about the movie adaptations, is Faramir. In the books he's just awesome, after seeing the Ring he gives Sam and Frodo and Gollum a bunch of food to top off their packs, and sends them on their way with no interest in taking the ring.
Still, the movie is absolutely fantastic. The behind the scenes for a ton of this stuff is a wild ride in and of itself, Helm's Deep especially has some wild production value going on.

One of the things they never bent on was that the Ring needed to be always portrayed as about to turn everyone it comes into contact with. • @ConnellxSilverfur
    @ConnellxSilverfur ปีที่แล้ว +8

Hey Ang! Your commentary about Gandalf's fight with the Balrog (known in the books/lore as "Durin's Bane") is interesting. The fact is that Gandalf wasn't worried about his own death at that point. Durin's bane was a divinely created creature in much the same respect that Gandalf was. Both are "maiar" spirits, essentially lower angels created by divine powers. Durin's bane sided with Morgoth during the first age (essentially the devil in Tolkein's mythos), and became a demon. Gandalf, meanwhile, serves Eru Illuvitar (essentially the God/creator of Middle Earth). Thus, it was not only the fact that only he COULD stand up to Durin's bane, but he HAD to stand up to Durin's Bane. It was one of several tasks appointed to him when he came to Middle Earth.
It's also worth noting that we never get to see the true power of Gandalf, Saruman, or any of their order, as they are intentionally disguised in the visage of old men and their powers are limited. Their task was to guide and help the peoples of Middle Earth, not to dominate them via sheer power, although they easily could.

This is what makes faramir truly the most likable that he proves that he is strong and special as well just in a different way. To some psychologists, Wormtongue serves as an archetypal sycophant. Tolkien scholars note that Tolkien based Wormtongue on the untrustworthy character Unferth in Beowulf. He is presumptive, behaving as if he already rules Rohan, and exemplifies lechery, as correctly guessed by Gandalf; he hopes to become rich, and to take Éowyn as the woman he desires.
The name Gríma derives from the Old English or Icelandic word meaning "mask", "helmet" or "spectre"
Tolkien scholars have noted that Wormtongue's interaction with Gandalf in Meduseld has an Old English counterpart in the epic poem Beowulf: the account is closely based on the hero Beowulf's dealings with Unferth in Heorot, where Unferth is King Hrothgar's "ambiguous" spokesman; Unferth is thoroughly discredited by Beowulf, as Wormtongue is by Gandalf.
The critic Charles W. Nelson describes Wormtongue's attitude as an example of presumption, behaving "as if he were already on the throne" of Rohan. Nelson notes that Richard Purtill suggests that Tolkien is intentionally embodying the seven deadly sins in his characters. He quotes from one of Tolkien's letters to this effect: "the encouragement of good morals in this real world, by the ancient device of exemplifying them in unfamiliar embodiments, that may tend to 'bring them home.'" Clark writes that Dwarves exemplify greed, Men pride, Elves envy, Ents sloth, Hobbits gluttony, Orcs anger, and Wormtongue lechery. That lechery is, Nelson notes, correctly guessed by Gandalf: that he would gain a large share in Meduseld's treasure, and Éowyn's hand in marriage, "on whose person Grima had long cast lecherous eyes and lascivious looks", and indeed in Éomer's words that Grima had "haunted her steps".
in this case Elves envy was eventually what became of them because they cannot die in the same way Men do as death was their gift from Eru Îlluvatar! Mainly to allow their Fëa(spirit) to go beyond the circles of the world (halls of Eru which those of Rohan and Númenor call the “Golden Halls Of Their Fathers, Of Whom Of Mighty Company”)❤️ many if not all don’t know that. Even the VALAR and Maiar themselves became envious of the gift of an Men. It was so their spirit can escape from Morgoth ever chasing after them and messing with their spirits. As they dealt with Morgoth for a long time. Some say even before Galadriel’s brother found the first men ever to walk the earth; their ancestors dealt with his terror and dread, which also lead to him warping them from the start to live shorter lives. They apparently were meant to be much longer lived! But yeah Númenoreans lived up to 500+ years each & Elronds Brother Elros lived beyond that as he was formally an elf like his brother. Not just any elf can do the switch. It’s all due to their ancestors.

The part about the dead marshes includes Legolas’s Father; Thranduil, & Thranduil’s father Oropher, were to join the Last Alliance in from a different angle to achieve a certain war tactic but Oropher and others got waylayed by orcs & many corrupted men which lead to eventually Oropher dying there, this loss effected Legolas’s father so very deeply forevermore. The bond between he and his son is the same bond Thranduil has with Legolas. And the braid he wears is to honour his grandfather. I believe after his death braids became less common. A sort of respect thing I believe. Both his father and Grandfather lived in Doriath(Elu Thingol’s domain[Elwë], which was heartbea of middle earth; Aside from Gondolin which held this mantle until it’s secret location was given up by a tortured elf who was the son of a very important mother who was the sister of the high king Turgon). All on a landmass called Beleriand that sunk under the sea after a set of disastrous events that lead to many greater outcomes much later on in the legendarium. This here is a whole set of stories of which also includes a quite a bit of Galadriel too but moreso other characters during this era. Of Beren And Lùthien comes to mind and Children Of Hurin!! You’ll fall in love even more after the third movie. Then you can enter into the lore videos like Moviejoob and OmarioRPG have done reaction videos too. Amazing stuff.

Gandalf and the Balrog both fell into the deep chasm. He was burned by the Balrog's fire on the way down, then almost froze in the water at the bottom. He pursued his foe for days through dark tunnels, and then all the way up the Endless Stair to the top of Durin's Tower in the living rock of Zirakzigil, where the two engaged in a two-day long battle at the pinnacle of the Silvertine above the clouds. They fought in a narrow space upon Celebdil, above the mists of the world. The sun shone fiercely, but all below was wrapped in cloud, so that anyone watching from below would think they saw flashes from lightning and heard thunder. A great smoke of vapor and steam rose about them, and ice fell like rain.
There they fought until at last Gandalf threw down his enemy, and the Balrog broke the mountain-side as it fell. Then darkness took Gandalf, and he passed away. The battle had left Durin's Tower in ruins and caused the destruction of the Endless Stair. The entire battle, from the confrontation on the Bridge of Khazad-dûm to the mutual demise of the Balrog and Gandalf, had taken ten days.

There are several reasons why Denethor sees Faramir as his lesser son aside from him "letting" the enemy take over Osgiliath. One is that when his mother Findulas gave birth to him, she was weakened by the labor and got sick and frail. She died when Faramit was five and therefore indirectly blamed him for his wife's death. Another that is that Denethor wouldn't want a king to come back and claim the throne but to continue having the stewarts rule Gondor and Boromir was the perfect candidate to follow in his father's footsteps, while Faramir was refered as a "Wizard's Pupil" as Gandalf taught him a lot of life lessons and wisdom, that he'd be more willing to accept a new king (Denethor was jealous and suspcious of Gandalf ever since he was a child and he met Aragorn, though under the alias Thorongil, who helped his father Echthelion fighting against Mordon's forces, even if he didn't know it was Aragorn at the time, he was suspcious of him and jeaous as Echthelion praised him a lot more than his own son).

Like he's actively despising of Faramir's attempts to be noble, reminding him of the revered forefathers he's sworn to uphold and honor; _what a weird insult_ to come from the Steward of a all people.

Tolkien, having fought in WW1,cared deeply for this character because he represents the true soldier. Faramir despises war even though he is a great warrior, there is a line in the books that sums this up,they put it discreetly in the first movie as the translation of the elvish chorus you hear during Boromir's death: "I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. Fun fact: the biggest Tolkien fan in the movie, and the only one to actually meet J.R.R., was Christopher Lee, the actor who played Saruman. He was also a spy in WWII and was who James Bond was based on. Anyway...

@@GreyhawkTheAngry yeah, theres a scene where Saruman gets stabbed in the back in the extra section section under deleted scenes. Christopher Lee commented to Peter Jackson about shooting the scene when he made that quote. To finish it, Christopher Lee mentioned that people don't typically make a sound when they're stabbed in the back, the immediate shock to the system causes the person to pause in silence for a few seconds as their body is registering what exactly just happened.

This edit was insanely good. just her thinking both actors were the same and he was shooting both films at the same time had me rolling!
