I went to St. John of God from 2003-2007 until my family moved from the area. 30:48 were all my class mates all the way up to 3rd grade when I left. Thank you for this videos and bringing back memories of my earliest days in school!
I'm sad to see that this church was closed and sold. Your video presrrved a lot of fine memories. It reminds me of the church my mother's family went to in Monongahela. It awas also an Italian parish. My parents were married in it and I was baptized there. Bishop Zubik closed it and made them go to the other chyrch which doesn't have very good parking or is handicapped accessible. The church has not been sold because some of the parishioners have taken the diocese to court to reopen the church aa a shrine so they can pray and have mass there so it just sits there empty . It can't be sold because it's involved in litigation. These people have a lot of faith and are stubborn. There is a good chance they may win in the long run.
Tim, this is a great video. Around 19:45 in the dedication procession I spotted a few of the Franciscan Friars who were instructors at Canevin. In the early 2000's we went to the festivals , spaghetti diners and rummage sales at the Mother of Sorrows Parish Hall up the street from the "new" church.
Used to remember Mother of Sorrow for their pizza sales on Fridays. Our teachers at Norwood Elementary would lead us across the street to the basement of the church and their social hall. Great pizza. Very nice woman that baked and sold it.
You might be able to taste that memory very soon, Joe! Those same pizza ladies have been invited to take over the kitchen at St. Malachy church (of the newly formed Archangel Gabriel Parish) on Fridays during Lent this year to continue their tradition of great pizza and all the other things they sold there. Maybe it will continue beyond Lent - who knows!
@12:58 the procession to the groundbreaking ceremony, I can see my Grandparent's house and business. Cusano's Market. Its the building with the high storefront windows on the left. Thanks for the video!
Such wonderful memories, especially of the old M of S where I received Baptism, was in a May Crowning Ceremony, received First Holy Communion, and was confirmed by John Cardinal Wright. I was married in the new church. Thanks for sharing this!

Hey Deacon, You know that you've started a wonderful thing here with the McKees Rocks Churches. Are you going to continue with S.S. Cyril & Methodius, St. Frances de Sales, St. Marks, St. Mary's, St. Vincent de Paul? Of course, for all except St. Mary's, you'd have to use vintage photos/videos of the interiors, but I'm sure the local citizenry would love it. My guess is that the MoS interviews were taped during the big Assumption school artifacts sale. There are still enough locals whom you could contact for interviews even standing outside the actual church buildings themselves. Just a thought.
Thanks, but it probably ain't gonna happen. It should have been done during the St. John of God merger happened but the technology just wasn't there at that time (at least for amateurs like me!). I had to beg several times for pictures of weddings, First Communions and the like for this one and couldn't get a good response - for a while I had more of the old church than the new one. Thankfully people came through with the old video and the pictures you saw. Otherwise it would have just been the video of me wandering through the empty building. I still have a lot of old street pics to get to - how about the Bottoms before the McKees Rocks Bridge? Steuben St. and Elliott? I've still got to do Saw Mill Run Blvd. and West Liberty Ave. I was going to do the Thornburg Bridge but they're gonna fix it again so I might as well wait on that one so it's as up to date as possible.
Beautiful! Thank you. This was our community...All good things really come to an end...xxx

You makes great videos, thank you Tim. It is very sad to see churches close with what seems to be society going downhill. Have a Merry Christmas
