- As 2020 approaches, WSJ's Joanna Stern wanted to see just how much the smartphone has changed our lives in the past decade. So she ditched her iPhone and traveled to Hell, Mich., with a bag of 2010 gadgets, including an old BlackBerry, a Garmin GPS and a Canon point-and-shoot.

The issue isn’t that tech in 2010 sucks it’s that 2019 tech isn’t compatible with 2010 tech
Good point.
I agree.
Sure bud
Actually an iPhone 4 which came out in 2010 has the same basic features than 2020 smartphones
@@computronium8 Attempt to use an iPhone 4 today though, it'll struggle. I had to replace my iPhone 4 in 2013 after iOS 7 was released because it was far too slow to really be usable. So, as Hector said, 2010 tech isn't compatible with 2019 tech.
There's still millions of people using old tech older than 2010 tech especially in poor country and some still uses Nokia 3310
2010 tech is usable, but not as much as it used to.
@Nick Moore and when you drop it you'll get a 3 pieces set of jigsaw puzzle
Wow they had windows 10 in 2010. Nice.
We had better one, windows 7!
David Mitchell Or XP. Both a lot faster and didnt push updates down your throat.
I consider that an automatic disqualification
@Masterr Laster I mean, windows 10 is basically windows 7

iPhone 4 was released in 2010...all you really need is a iphone 4...
watch the video, dunce
Victor Cash cuz that’s just not as realistic to the times, we were all just then catching on to the iPhone wave, before we knew TRUE high performance, true MULTI-MEDIA Devices
Victor Cash - I still use my iPhone 4s
She was only using tech *she* used in 2010
"An iPhone 4"
You failed. You drove in a post 2010 car.
The Automaticist only due to the fact that I’m probably the only American who owns a vehicle older than 2010; but for the right price, I’m willing to sell that exclusive title...... ;) lol
@@My_Alchemical_Romance my car is from 2008 and I only have 40k miles on it lol
Cars were built better. I like having a stereo with real buttons on it instead of a laggy touch screen that freezes up!
Ikr? Is this video was realistic she should’ve driven a horse smh

2010 technology
*thumbnail shows 2004 iPod Mini*
Soon technology will accelerate to the point that every 1 second the last second is out of date.
By then world war 3 might have happened and we're back to using sticks and stones
Jarid Gaming every 60 seconds in Africa, a year of technology goes by
Soon? Its happening now.
Moore's law?...
It's amazing how much technology changes in just a decade.
Phones in 2010 had GPS
Andro dibox I thought so. My Blackberry has a sprint navigation app
my blackberry had gps
Yep nothing has changed in this decade except numbers and size
@@donnell515 my phone doesnt have gps.. its very limited lol in 2010 everything is ancient
Did not know they had Windows 10 in 2010!!
CIA well it’s tech from 2010 still
You don't know because you are busy finding bin laden
#camp for crimes against humanity
CIA your the CIA, how do you not know that?! Lol
CIA and windows 10 was 2013
Dumb video. They're acting like 2010 is the stone age. Most of the 2019 tech is just a refinement of the 2010 tech. Also, she should have just gotten an iPhone 4. It came out in 2010 and it has all that she needed.
Not everyone had the latest flagship in 2010
HUNKragor iPhone 3???
Yeah, lik she said, shes using tech SHE used. she probanly didn't open an iphone, clearly she used a blackberry that worked fine for her
samsung galaxy s?
iPhones are too expensive at that time and Android is on the rise and this was her tech she owned back in 2010.
Could’ve just used an iPhone 4 instead of all of those gadgets 😂
Nico Villalobos fr doe
So try navigating with your iPhone 4 in 2010. What will happen?? You will run out of data in like 20 minutes 😂, this is why around this time people still used these stuff
Nobody in 2010 had an iPhone half of my friends used Sony erickson flip phones so this video is super accurate e
Nico Villalobos Phones arent really smart until 2012 when iPhone 5 becomes popular.. iPhne 2G to iPhone4 is just too limited still 2g and 3G no lte makes me 🤮
@@iceinducer9528 lte took a long time to become the mainstream. LTE in 2012 is about the same as 5G now. Very limited. 2013 changed the game for smartphones and after that was when they really became mainstream
Forget Instagram, we were using Facebook in 2010 lol
Meanwhile me who was using a 2009 laptop until 2020:

10 years later, your selfie 🤳 game is still not good in 2020 😂😂
Iphone 4 existed in 2010. That would have been the non stupid way to complete this challenge.
Oh that beautiful moment where the only way to communicate is through text message. Kids nowadays will not be able to relate how beautiful those moments are
This is what I call high end journalism . Thank you.
Should've hired a 2010 vehicle too. But I guess the Eclipse Cross is like a 2010 vehicle.
Journalism in 2019: "What if I, like, couldn't Tweet on my iPhone for a day??"
Joanna is the best! Very professional, funny and creative!
No one
2123- going a year only using 2122 tech
- 2010 technology wasn't bad, i was in high school and in have a nice internet connection, nice phone 'With most of the same apps we use today' the main difference is that smartphones are just bigger but overall we use the same stuff 10 years ago, just a new layout.
I'll bet that iPhone 3G had an octacore Snapdragon and 4 GB of ram
MrManiac3 no actually the 3g was rather obsolete in 2010
I’ll also bet that the iPhone 4 and even the ones after had 16gb of ram with a snapdragon 865 5G plus and 1tb of storage, I’ll also bet that it totally had an octacore OLED display too.
I definitely remember going through the struggle to post a photo.
The iPhone 4 was out in 2010, this ain’t the 90s
British people just watching her be baffled by a pasty 😂😂
isn't just brits, we have them across the midwestern US
Lady needed a tripod for that selfie smh
2010 was like Yesterday, already advanced technology and internet..How about go back to 1995..
@Nick Moore ...Back in 1995 we used to play outside and entertain each other, now we get entertained by our devices, we sit lonely in our rooms and play video games. (I was 15 back then )
@Nick Moore ...Yep, I used to record their music on VHS
SB SB that’s is the real test
@@sbsb7845 I didnt know there were laptops, elevators, gadgets in 1995, and a playstation existed in 1995? Seriously i thought 1995 technology and way of life isnt that much difference of living in 1960s just sending mail, no radios or computer.
This shows how addicted mankind is to their smartphones.
OK BOOMER
OK BOOMER
I'm not a boomer either. Now I'm confused.
Don't worry, OK BOOMER is not considered an insult, it's just a meme, and if I tell you the truth, this comment was the perfect occasion to say it
U know. The iPhone 4 came out in 2010 along with the iPad.
This challenge was more from the late 2000s
Yup. But she Said Things That She Used
People here are saying that she could use iphone or laptop etc, but i remember i have everything in my blackberry, i got gps, music, reading app, this video makes 2010 looks like 2 decades behind
That blackberry was liiiiit. One of my favorite phones I've ever owned
A true 2010 tech experience is a computer running Windows 7
Shareef Naeem or Windows XP
@@SalivatingSteve only in the sense that it was popular at the time, but not the latest.
Windows XP was the hottest tech in 2002 and Windows 7 in 2010
The earliest that I can go to is 2016, phone, Sony Ericsson W760i, Lenovo T60 with Windows XP, iPod copycat, Olympus camera, Nintendo New 3DS XL, and stop.
Just listen to an mp3 or something
Lol
they had gps back in 2010....
Maximus Trolleus Yes, but her gps device couldn’t download the updated maps. That’s why she had to use a map.
lostinthelookingglas it wasn’t even so much that the maps were out of date, but the GPS satellites had an update in the last few years that makes them incompatible with old devices.
Actually, you had the wrong gadgets in 2010...
Nice decade in consumer technology reflective video, Team WSJ. Thanks for visiting the ole' Mitten State, Joanna. 🥰 I hope you had a nice visit to Detroit. Your loyal WSJ Subsciber,
-Norm (Auburn Hills, MI)
2010 was the year the iphone 4 was introduced .... by that time blackberry was kinda irrelevant already
The first Galaxy S from Samsung also came out in 2010. This video is very inaccurate. 2010 is more advanced than this. BlackBerry is more early to mid 2000s tech.
@@franksmith613 how many people got the flagship in the first year?
This is more like the average person's experience
in 2010 the iPhone 4 will be introduced.
and you will see why 2010 wont be like 2010
This is your daily dose of Recommendation
2010 tech only challenge
I held onto my BlackBerry Bold until 2012. Truly, I was reluctant to acquire an iPhone, perhaps even phobic. I am someone that would go back to an era when none of this technology existed.
The 2010 to 2012 days when all social media was for adults only and when there was no smartphone craze
2013 too and 2014 was the last year that felt like the 00s
@@joenotexotic4872 the 90s and 2000s were the best decades ever
Chris Sealy early 2010s and 2014 still felt like the 2000s so yeah
Chris Sealy I agree tho
@@joenotexotic4872 agreed
Set up me a really great MySpace account.
Calvin Hikes MySpace was already long dead in 2010
Carl Clark no lol, MySpace was a close second to Facebook in 2010
2000s/10s throwbacks everywhere😂
Imagine all those gadgets in just one phone... and more.
That, ladies and gentlemen, is why billionaires are billionaires.
Edge ok boomer
What does it have to do with billionaires?
Up Next: using technology from 1920 in 2020
For some reason I still love the 2010 tech it’s just nostalgic like the Tiger handheld games
Back in 2010, I got my first iPhone (iPhone 3G). How time flies!
Basically, we all can’t go back. We can only go forward!
Back in 2010, I had an iPhone 4, and I kinda wonder how I'd fare in a similar challenge, with there being apps but the APIs having been changed since then so I wouldn't have been able to log in.
(Edit: I forgot I bought my original iPad Wi-Fi in 2011 or 2012, not 2010)
It actually amazing also terrifying how technology change our behaviour in one decade
So your solution is to borrow someone else's 2019 PC... I'm calling it a fail. Also, i seem to recall doing all that in 2010 on phones. There were many decent android phones (Motorola droid x or htc evo) and also the iphone 4 back then, all of which could use gps and browse the web. Whilst it may have been a little more inconvenient and slower, it worked pretty well. This was the dumbest thing I've seen ever...
Luke Watts yeah this was more like 2003-2007 tech.
why didn’t she just use the iphone from 2010??
That is what I'm wondering. The Iphone 4 came out in 2010.
Because the whole point was not to use a smartphone
I remember the iPhone 4 back in highschool, biggest upgrade I ever had, if it wasn't for the tiny screen I'd be still using it today if everything was still compatible
I can't wait for 24 Hours With Only 2020 technology in December 2029!
I can’t believe that I was using a flip phone only a few years ago and now I have a iPhone , everything changed so quickly and I didn’t even notice how technology changed so much
5:58 or asked people to take a photos of us.
Man: ahh, why do you need me to take of you again while there's a huge camera and camera man in front of you?
2030 : 24 hours with only 2020 technology
This video was not what I thought it would be.
This was a blast straight into the past. My mom has a polaroid point and shoot though. It may be great for online privacy, but it's a pain in the neck when it comes to compatibility with modern products.
I don’t see the problem. I’d do this. It would be nostalgic.
And the car isn’t from 2010 either. So congratulations on that.
Me: *Laughs in flip phone ringtones*
Or, she could’ve just gotten an iPhone 4 instead. It’s a 2010 challenge, not a 2000 challenge. 😂
AHHHHH yessss. The FLIP
I don't know why she couldn't just use a Iphone 4. The Iphone 4 came out in 2010. That is much better than a old BlackBerry which is more early 2000s tech anyways.
Again realism not all people had iPhone 4’s in 2010 I guess she just had a Blackberry at the time plus watch the entire video before commenting
My grandpa still uses a flip phone. He refuses to use a smartphone, even if we have one just lying on the shelf collecting dust
Life was way peaceful in 2010 ..without much technologies that constantly ping us and we have more time to spend with people.
The fact that she had no idea what a pasty was is quite hilarious. Although it’s really British.
You are funny. Great idea and video!
A place having only 2000 tech should be called Heaven.
Right??
Wow this was 2010 tech? Funny how much has changed when 2010 wasn't considered a dinosaur tech age.
The thing about this is a lot of the tech showcased here is older than 2010. In 2010 there was the first iPad, iPhone 4. Like why is she using an iPod mini from 2004?
The iPhone 4 was released in 2010, by then there had already been 3 gens of iPhones. The iPod she has looks like a 2004 model.
My father in law at the time bought a iPhone 4 and he’s not an early adopter.
Ok, this is perhaps just semantics.
I still use my Zune HD daily
I used to have a Motorola phone, but time has changed.
New challenge, 24 hours in 2020 with 1820's technology!
It would be good to go a few days or a week without tv,phone, internet and all the latest gadgets🤔👌
powertoachieve TVs and telephones are latest gadgets?
@@9852323 I think they mean Smart TVs and smartphones
They should have used 2010 youtube, you know before it was ruined by the adpocalypse caused by WSJ?
I like Joanna Stern the most because I am a tech person and she reviews tech in a very good way
Lol she dropped the phone on front, after that she used it again. When she opened the drawer it was seated back! Such a tech addict!
I actually liked my blackberry it is still in my safe
Funny thing is, I’m one of the few people nowadays who actually use a BlackBerry. Specifically, a Bold 9780. Works great!
The best pasty is a cornish pasty, eaten with your hands and no sauce
Those headphones came in 2012....
What's really interesting is how we thought we were super advanced with those technologies back in 2010...and we were...compared to the electronics and technologies we had access to years before. That GPS, camera and BlackBerry amazed us just 10 years ago even though they are dinosaurs now.
Fun fact, when the first iphone was released it didn't have copy and paste.
As a Cornish person (where pasty’s were born), I am insulted by that “pasty” 😂 and was that gravy on top?? Um excuse me!?!? 😂🤮
Aww, purple iPhone. 💜
PSA: A pasty is British, Cornish specifically, and you don’t have gravy with it.
saw joanna on the thumbnail, liked first then watch
Us army still uses compass and paper map to navigate. So don’t blame the tech.
They make it sound like 2010 was the 1840s or something
good things in 2010 is we got technology but still with good social life..
Why so difficult. I can get by 24 hour by using 1990 tech
People excessively living on social media.... THERE IS A CHOICE
any tech built is not intrusive or bad until overused or abused.
Live smart but survive smarter.
I still use a 1998 Nokia and a 1985 Walkman in 2019
I use dial up modem with windows 98 computer I came from the past
@Nick Moore take a picture of me with a kodak
