"Without You" is a song written by Pete Ham and Tom Evans of British rock group Badfinger, and first released on their 1970 album No Dice. In 1994 Mariah decided to cover this song, and slayed it!

I think that she is one of the most underrated artists of our time. In terms of colour, extension and also her transitions between chest, head voices and witless...she is incomparable...on top of that we shouldn’t forget that she write all her songs...I’m not a huge fan of her but I love music and I really believe she is the best vocalist of our time!

I am so glad I grew up hearing her. Huge influence.
It is live, listen to the studio version and you'll hear the difference, in her prime she consistently delivered amazing live performances so naturally there were doubters that any human being could consistently sing like that. Eventually time, vocal nodules, lifestyle and overworking takes a toll on your voice and in recent years she's used backing tracks to improve the sound of her voice in certain key notes so they sound as perfect as possible, but back in her prime there's no denying what a vocal beast she was.

Hey Dereck. I'm enjoying all of your pride week reactions...very much so, actually.
When you get around to doing Mariah Carey again, I do have a request. I feel like not enough justice is given to her regarding her live performances. Sure, we have award shows and made for DVD concerts but raw footage from her concerts really shows how she shines as an artist. Sure, some of the clips are quite choppy but it'd be interesting to get your input on her resonance, breath control, agility. The clip I'm recommending is titled "18 Vision Of Love - Mariah Carey (live at Los Angeles)" and is from 2003. The tour was titled "The Charmbracelet World Tour", which was in support of her album "Charmbracelet". It was quite an extensive tour as, according to Wikipedia, she had 69 shows worldwide over an 8-month span. 2002-2004 is actually my favorite "era" of hers. For me, personally, I find all of her registers are intact and she has a deeper, weightier voice than compared to her earlier days. If there were a time that she could handle this many shows, this would have been the time. Known as the "Charmbracelet Era" (since the fans refer to Mariah throughout different "eras"), "Vision of Love" and "Make It Happen" are generally considered two of her tracks that were most consistent.
Anyhoo, thanks for listening to my request. I know that the lambily (what Mariah's fans call themselves) would certainly support reactions to these types of videos. Nobody's really doing them and I honestly think it could be a gold mine for some additional viewership. On top of that, you're likeable. Alright sir, back to pride videos. Peace!

70's. Badfinger wrote and performed it in 1970 and Harry Nilsson re-recorded it in 1971.
Steve Adams I heard a lot in the 80s on the radio great song .. I didn’t grow up in the 70s so I don’t know . When I heard again in the 90s , loved Mariah’s version 😉 .. she also sings the Phil Collins version song , I like version the best .

Mariah was so good back in the day. Now? Not so much.
This is almost word for word cover, the original sounds much the same. Sure Mariah makes sound slightly better but I prefer the original which I grew up with. Youngstet today don't know there the track comes from. Critiquing a cover doesn't speak volumes. Listen to the original, then come back to the mariah performance!

This song was Mariah Carey biggest hit in Europe... still is her only #01 song in most European countries. She has a good voice and does a wonderful job on this song but both Whitney Houston and Celine Dion have better voices and better technique - that's why Mariah Carey didn't went even bigger worldwide (as they are her contemporaries as well).

And sorry but in Asia Celine DIon sold almost the same as Mariah, little less than her in US and about 8 times more than her in Europe (making her ahead of Mariah worldwide). But who cares about it? Madonna that has the worst voice among them all is the best selling female artist worldwide by large and even have more TOP 40 Hits and albums (even in Asia). Success and voice don't match most of the times.
