      Thanks Martin, yes it was good to catch up and put the world to rights. We are lucky to have so many bothies in Scotland. I have a few favourites, mostly well off the beaten track. Gorton is fairly accessible but there is a fair chance of it being unoccupied midweek at this time of the year. ATB, Dave

    Did you happen to catch glimpse of a white and brown dog running anywhere out there? There’s a dog that’s been missing for 9 months now and he has possibly been spotted on the railroad tracks in that area.

      Hi Clare, no I didn't see any dogs. I have seen social media reports about the missing dog. I rather suspect the shepherd (from Achallader) would be aware of any dogs in the area, especially at this time of year. The sheep are fairly far up the glen and will be lambing soon, so will be checked frequently. And, although the area might be regarded as remote, there are vehicle tracks on both sides of the glen. There is an Argo track running through the trees (Crannach). Also, there have been overnight rail works on that stretch of line. These works are floodlight (and visible from a very considerable distance). So, in short, lots of human activity and plenty of opportunities for a lost dog to make contact, or be seen by farmers or rail workers. I also recall, albeit from a hike about twenty years ago, meeting a local chap who had a pair of beagles. It was a memorable encounter because the dogs 'shared' a leash and managed to trip me up as they ran past. So, the recent dog sighting, shared on FB, might have been a local dog, out galavanting. ATB, Dave

    Nice wee video Dave. I can’t wait until everything turns green and you are swatting the midges (sorry, couldn’t help it). Thanks and as always, be well and keep the blue side up ⬆️

      Hi Gary, in fact, I’m also looking forward to summer (midges, not so much). Our winters can be a touch dreary and we long for the green shoots of spring. The hedgerows surrounding the fields around my home village are beginning to leaf up; a very welcome sight. I enjoyed a coastal hike today, but returned to the house covered in a decent layer of snow and ice. Spring has to battle for a place in the Scottish calendar :) It seems we are in for a fairly long cold spell, which I hope will slowly fade to a proper spring. Meantime, I’m out in the garden each night, protecting the shoots brave enough to push through the soil. All good fun though. Keep the blue side up my friend. ATB, Dave

      Hi Alison, very nice to meet you too. Your dad is a true gentleman and it is wonderful to chat with him through the comments on my the channel. I hope you are enjoying the wee videos and the glimpses of Scotland. Spring is making a valiant attempt at breaking through and it won’t be too long before we can get out with the cameras to show you some Scottish scenery, hopefully under clear blue skies. ATB, Dave

    What is the bike you have in this one dave?

    • @daveoutdoorsscotland2854
      @daveoutdoorsscotland2854  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is an old Specialized Rockhopper. I think it is probably the most disappointing bike I’ve ever owned. Although, having said that, it is pretty robust and has never let me down. I just don’t like the geometry, gearing and the 29” wheels seem oversized, especially on the rough stuff. It was a bit of an impulse buy, to replace my old mountain touring bike (a Norco), which I left in China). If I was going to own just one bike (for track and back country travel), I would buy a steel framed bike with wide tyres (not necessarily a fat bike). I would avoid ‘one by’ gearing in preference for a double crank up front. I’d also avoid low rim wheels (I’m not a fan of tubeless). I’d also go for smaller wheels. I like 26” wheels but they also have limitations and are pretty much going out of fashion on good bikes. So, probably 27.5 wheels in a 2 by set up on a steel frame. I probably wouldn’t fit any suspension. Surly have good base models that can be improved, but they are expensive (and difficult to source). Final point, I think the retail pricing of many modern bikes is outrageous. Sadly, a self build using new parts would also be outrageously expensive. I’m thinking about building my own ‘dream bike’ using a mixture of old and new parts. If I get round to it, I might make a vid of the build. ATB, Dave
