  • T-Minus one week people, this is not a drill! Fortunately have learned much more about our plan and use of Google Classroom with littles since this video was filmed, but please leave any tips that have helped you already down below. Lucky to lean on and learn from this community during this weird season. Love y'all, mean it!

    As a first grade teacher and first grade parent, I have realized that it is hard for a first grader to navigate the tools needed for online learning alone. It is hard to find someone to help them whenever parents have to work. So, I think you are doing the best thing by making sure that there are tasks that are not as difficult to login to or navigate. We are in person now. We are working on a platform that will be easy to navigate and sometimes be able to work on at their convenience in case we have to go online.

      Duane, thank you so much for taking the time to comment and share your experience! I will keep this in mind as I continue planning for our start next week. Because we are expected to assign within google classroom, I have created some assignments that are focused solely on tech skills (drag and drop, typing into text boxes, etc.) without any academic content. I'm planning to model individual skills during our live sessions and then have them attempt it as an asynchronous task later that day. Hoping this will help us once we start to incorporate academics into the online work. Wishing you the very best with your school year! Also pinning your comment to keep a parents' perspective visible in this space.

      @@puttingthemfirst Thank you! I also enjoy your videos and will continue watching and I serve how it goes for you. I'm hoping we don't have to go virtual. Good luck! We have 5 on our grade level, 1 is the virtual teacher and the other 3 and I are in person. We have 18-19 each.

    Seesaw all the way its so much easier for Littles to use especially if they are on a tablet. But good for a chromebook too. They can write with their finger or a stylus, put in a text box or record themselves reading and you can link the seesaw activity to your Google classroom if you're school requires you to assign things through google classroom

    I teach 2nd with google classroom! Basically, first of the year they are still first graders ..but google quizzes is amazing! Very simple for students to use and you create the quiz and get data! Kiddos do get better and they even taught me things! They are such quick learners!

    Hi! I love your videos so much they are so great for ideas!! I am a first year 2nd grade intervention specialist, and my district uses PearDeck in our google slides and it makes interactive draggables, questions, and draw slides that record their answers! It takes a bit to navigate, but it’s been working pretty well for my kiddos! Thought that might help with progress monitoring! Good luck this year!

    Hi Lauren!
    Happy early birthday fellow Virgo! 🥳my birthday is on the 10th. I completely understand your apprehension about rolling out Google Classroom for the little ones. I will say that creating a screencastify tutorial for parents and setting up a resource folder within Google Classroom will be extremely helpful. Just explaining to patents how to navigate within Google Classroom and how to submit assignments could help with future troubleshooting.

    I totally agree about Google Classroom! I am teaching kindergarten in-person in the AM and a different group virtually in the PM. I’m expected to stay on-line in the afternoon for all 3 hours! Ugh. Coworkers keep saying Classroom is so easy but they don’t teach K. Just too much for 5 year olds to manage. You are making a good decision in my opinion.

    You are right about the google classroom. As a parent it does require support....and a lot of support. So glad you are at least considering and thinking about it from their point of view

    This is such a stressful year! Whenever you’re making videos of the google classroom keep it mind it looks different as student vs teacher. It might help to make another account & add that as a student so you can see what they see! I hope you have a good year!!

    I teach kindergarten and we’re 100% virtual until October, and I have the exact same worries! The schedule and online resources our district is requiring are soooo not created for little ones. We’re doing a full day 7:30-2, all week long, and they’re expecting to basically be online all day. Even though I have no control of this I feel SO guilty “making” them do this & asking so much of parents! 😭

    A virtual field trip is another option for your class reward. We "went" on several field trips - San Diego Zoo and Disneyland were favorites.

    Fyi, your headaches could be from the fluorescent lights in your classroom, not your screens. I know of another teacher that has to hang twinkle lights in her class so she can shut off half of the fluorescents due to her getting migraines. The blue blocker lenses are great when it is night time, but during the day, be careful because if you block to much blue light during the day, it could throw off your circadian rhythms.

    I use Seesaw with my kinder kids. I love it!! I explain it's Pinterest meets TeacherPayTeacher. Parents DO need to help with Text boxes and recording, but that's how our distance learning is set up.

    I remember there was a program called ticket to read where the children would gain points by reading books and then use those points to decorate the clubhouse. So some of the rewards that you give while you were teaching online could be maybe little images of toys or decorations or a little furniture that they can put in the clubhouse I’m not sure how that would work but maybe each child could have a little clubhouse on the Google page that they could “buy” things for.

    For behavior management for 5th grade, I just say, “Y’all can leave if you are going to talk over the teacher.” 😂
    I say it after I’ve told them several times that we are getting started and when they spam the chat when it’s clearly not the appropriate time.
    Still don’t know what to do about the ones that randomly unmute themselves to make weird noise, they do it so fast, I just don’t know who it is. Sometimes the other students tell on them tho. My school uses Google Meet so I can’t control the unmute or turn off that chat

    I haven’t used Google classroom, but I am wondering if there is a way for them to draw or verbally record what they want to say as their answer. I know this isn’t the best solution and I wish I had better suggestions. Could you do a sort of Google form where they just have to check the boxes

    Would you mind linking your desk and diploma frames?
    Also, I am student teaching in first grade right now and my teacher has been having my students' parents upload pictures of their work to seesaw. I know this may be hard for students with working parents but that may help with submitting student work. Another fun thing that students could do if they are able to orate their response is use flipgrid and you can choose how long their videos are but they just click whatever link you give them, press a button to film a video through the app, and then they upload it directly to that link and all of the videos are in one spot and that is a great option for students to communicate what they know without having to type or write things out and then figure out how to upload that.

    • @puttingthemfirst
      @puttingthemfirst  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love seesaw and flipgrid! But... we have been asked to keep assignments in google classroom only so things are uniform across the district and websites/apps are kept to a minimum. We'll have more guidance this week, fingers crossed we learn more about app usage!
      The desk has sold out, but here's the link in case it comes back: www.wayfair.com/furniture/pdp/ivy-bronx-kunkel-l-shape-computer-desk-w001775828.html?piid=864945179

    Teaching online is exhausting. We started last week and unfortunately my district isn't doing a very good job with screen time, so I'm glad you're only online for the morning. We're online live from 9-11:30 and 12:15-2:45. And I teach Kindergarten, so. It's been interesting! They did so great last week but having to be "on" like that for that length of time is definitely draining so you are not alone!

    • @puttingthemfirst
      @puttingthemfirst  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't imagine how exhausting it must be! Praying we'll be out the other side of this and able to safely come together soon. Keep doing amazing things for your kindergarteners. They are lucky to have you!

    They will be able to navigate google classroom and slides. When assigning, you'll select make a copy for each student and they can submit easily. I made videos on how to navigate and presented during live lessons, as well as sent them to parents ahead of time.

      This is helping me feel a bit better! Since I filmed this video, I have made some assignments that are solely for them to practice the tech skills (dragging and dropping, typing in a text box, etc.) without any content. That way they can learn these in isolation before introducing academics. Your comment gives me a lot of peace of mind - thank you!
