- For this mine exploring trip, we visit one of Nevada's copper mining districts. We start by digging out a portal that has eroded shut over the years. After checking out that working, we climbed up to a huge ledge that's loaded with copper bearing minerals. We continued combing the countryside, finding more drifts and stopes, and running across a tarantula, garter snake, and lizards. We hope you enjoy the video and would love to hear from you, so please leave us a comment.

Good Morning Tom and Julie, I am so jealous as you two get to have all the fun, enjoy it while you can as getting old sucks Some of that Overburden you dug out of the Portal looks Pannable for some Free Gold. In Copper Mines always watch for Blue / Purplish Crystals as those are Azurite and very Valuable, I sold a Marble sized Specimen for $600. Snakes and Spiders etc. and my Uncle Ray love to eat Mine Crickets aka tailless scorpions. Not to be gross but Uncle Ray deep fried Mine Crickets and Dipped them in Chocolate, I think that Uranium Mining may have effected him a tad. lol
Good morning. I probably shoveled away a thousand dollars worth of gold and Azurite. Your Uncle Ray sounds like a character. The crickets were probably a tasty snack. With the price of timber being so ridiculously high i think you could mine, the mines for timber. I have friends who bought some expensive parcels of land here in RI. and they are waiting for lumber to go down before building. But meanwhile they are paying big notes on the land.
Yes, lumber prices are crazy high. The lumber in these old mines is worth a fortune, and the quality is of it is top notch. Many of these old timbers barely have a knot in them. Tho old saying was that boards with knots in them are firewood. Thanks for the comment, Paul!👍😁

I haven't seen one like that either. I've been told by a couple of people that it's most likely an air line. I don't know if there is rubber inside of the canvas. I suppose I could research it a bit. Thanks for the comment, William!👍😁

Yes, several mine workings in this area. I don't really plan the length of a video. I just let the story unfold at it's own pace. Our video with the most views is around 40 minutes long, so people will watch a longer video. Thanks for commenting, Max!😊

One night around 9 PM I was walking out the bedroom to head towards the bathroom and I saw a full grown tarantula inside my house - needless to say I froze at first and then went to work to get a glass and a piece of carboard to get it to go inside the glass and then deposited it outside.
As far as I know, tarantulas don't pose much of a threat to humans even if one did bite you. I wouldn't want one crawling around in my bed when I was sleeping, though. It was nice of you to release the one that you found in your house. 👍😁

You never know what you're going to find. When we get a really long adit, many times they are boring, so I cut half of it out. I personally like multi level mines with ladders and drifts every 100 feet. Thanks for the comment, Bill!👍

I learned something a few weeks ago when copper mining was the ore. There were operations to remove overburden and open up the old stopes, shafts, and adits. A form of strip mining. I think that's why those portals were short?
I think so because of Seeing the awesome colors along that ridge in your opening scenes. And color remains elsewhere. That huge pile is explained then.
Ending with the mystery of that lizard following you, or luring you. 😮What was lurking just beyond that opening? 😏Will we see Tom and Julie in the next episode? 🤔

Hi Rick. Some of these areas have been worked several times over the years, and sometimes end up getting stripped out like you said. Watched one of your videos where you found a rattler shed, another where Tom mentioned checking for snakes before fully entering a mine, then this one where you see a garter snake. I have seen many of your adventure videos of the southwest, other videos of people wandering isolated areas of Nevada & well populated hiking/mountain climbing areas, yet none of them have shown or mentioned interaction with living rattlesnakes.
Have either of you seen or heard a live rattler in your wanderings? I did search for "snake" on your channel & found this video. Which, incidentally, was quite a treat as I am still working my way through your mine exploring videos and this being posted just today. 🙂
Anyway, I travel/adventure/wander with my two dogs and have some concern regarding rattlesnake interactions. What I have watched and read, there doesn't seem to be a great amount of instances where people are coming into contact with poisonous snakes. I think I have seen one content creator in the Nevada, southern California region who regularly wears snake gaiters. I don't recall either of you two mentioning snake protection or wearing gaiters. So I am curious what your experience with poisonous snakes might be with all the remote back country wandering you do.
Keep making videos, I have enjoyed every one I watched.
We have had at least six close encounters with rattlesnakes that I can recall off the top of my head. A couple were very large and near mine portals. Maybe they hunt animals coming in and out of the mine. One was a Mojave Green. One incident involved a pit in some rocks of six snakes or so. They were somewhat lethargic because of the temperature. We are only in the desert areas in the fall and winter, so not as many snakes are active then. Still, they are around. We don't really wear any protective gaiters. We do always have trekking poles, which are handy for snakes. I moved the Mojave Green off the trail with a pole. I think listening and just being aware is good advice. Early fall & early spring are the times I try to get out west. For now.
Last year was the my first time out, and as remote areas are my main focus for exploring, I would leave my dogs at or in the car as I gingerly "tiptoed" through the desert scrub brush. 🙂
At least the mornings were generally cool in the desert. I would then travel to the mountains in the heat of the day.

Why don't explorers take a metal detector into these mines and surrounding areas? They can be set to discriminate between metals and respond with cues using sound to simplify the rejection of iron scrap and identification of gold or silver quite easily.
I can't speak for others, but we don't look for gold. I have done some mining, and you need way too much equipment to process ore properly. Even carrying around a metal detector on top of all the other gear we use for exploring would not be fun. Besides, who wants to get a bad case of gold fever? Lol Thanks for commenting!👍😁

@HappyQuails yes, I've looked at those pin pointer detectors. Interesting enough, still not enough for me to haul one around.
At the end where you said it was sliding, is that a fault? It looks like two totally different layers of minerals, maybe a volcano put something over the top of old rock.
Usually, these mine drifts follow a fault where the mineral laden hot water pushed up and left minerals behind in the gaps of the faults. Sometimes you will see what is called fault gouge which is a clay like material produced from the grinding together of the two sides of the fault. I'm not a geologist, although I sometimes wish I had gone that route when I was young. Thanks for the comment, Peter!👍

I say to Julie almost every time we're out that I should have been a geologist. I try to study up on it, but I just can't seem to retain much of it.

I wonder if anything will ever grow on the waste piles and return to natural desert or is all that land ruined forever. If it is ruined that sucks. Because it is so pretty where it is untouched.
Things will eventually grow, although the scars on the land will never disappear completely. The metals and minerals that are mined are necessary for making things that we use and need daily. So the mess that mining makes is kind of a necessary evil. Modern mines are required to make repairs to the land (reclamation)when the mining stops. Older mine were not required to do that.👍

I thought to myself, it's easy to point fingers, but I use an awful lot of copper as well as many other things that were taken from the land with some destruction of that property. I am really enjoying your channel and glad I found you guys. You have quickly become one of my must watch channels of a group of about 4. I had 3 must watch channels and now I have 4. I also really enjoy the still shots that you incorporate into your videos because I can pause it and really check out what cool think you have found. The snake looked like a juvenile coachwhip snake. Pale colored, slim and fast over ground. A common species in the Mojave desert.

We just show you what we are seeing while out combing the countryside. Sometimes, it's cool artifacts, and sometimes, it's spiders and snakes. The wildlife was tight-lipped, so we didn't get much out of them. Thanks for commenting, Duane!👍😊

In one of your episodes there was a heavy piece of unknown equipment that had a clamp on top to hold something round;. I suspect the round things were collets to hold different shapes of drill stem. The drill stem could be heated up and place in a collet clamp and a swedge pounded with to repoint the drills. Just a guess though.
If I'm thinking of the same piece of equipment I believe you are correct. It was for repairing drill steels. Thanks for commenting, Gary!👍

So, copper is my spirit mineral. I've worked in two separate copper mining districts over the course of a decade. I never tire of looking at the sensual beauty of copper mineralization in the wild. That deep blue outcrop at 6:00 was fantastic, and that thin copper banding at 15:00 was remarkable. Pretty sexy flat-face fault to go along with that copper mineralization as well. This area is very rich in copper minerals. The miners follow the rich part of the vein when digging. We try to see what is left of the colorful copper minerals. I think that answered your question. 👍😁
You guys are definitely dedicated digging out an entrance like that. I tip my hat.
I can't tell you how many times I've dug out a portal. About half the time it's unsuccessful, or the workings are caved a short way in. I do enjoy digging them though. There is a certain excitement and anticipation of the unknown that might lie beyond the plugged portal. Thanks for the comment, Joe!👍😊
