He starts out by saying you don't buy a truck to drag race but continually criticizes on and on about the acceleration. The acceleration is fine, believe me.
I love my truck but I have a huge gripe. Its not about the truck, but its about modern day vehicles and their engineering when it comes to maintenance. I have a small oil leak around the motor. Not entirely sure where but dont ask me because car mechanics isnt something I have a lot of knowledge about other than the bare bone basics (changing tires, oil change, you get the idea). Well, that oil leak is roughly a 5 grand job on this truck. The best part is its a $500 part, and the rest is labor, due to how much had to be dismantled to get to the area they need to work on, and then theres the reassembly
As a loyal F-150 driver... This truck looks and sounds great! Like you said with the torque, yeah. Not much can beat the low end of a diesel, or ecoboost. But still. This sweet V6 sounds way better than my vacuum cleaner ecoboost. I'm seriously considering a downsize. Love my ford.. But I kind of want to park my truck in the garage.
Yes, avoid the 2.7 4cyl. I owned the 2005 4 cyl and it was very underpowered. Just picked up a used 2016 limited and I’m very happy with it and saved quite a bit getting it used.
My dad got a 2011 Tacoma 4 door and has driven trucks all his life, this was his first Toyota and he says it's been the most reliable truck he's ever had.
while its not as upscale as the GMC canyon (which has real aluminium, full leather dash, more sound dampening) the Tacoma is definitely nicer on the inside than the Frontier and Colorado.
Always wanted one. Was saddened to find out, while sitting in it at a auto show, that my 6' 2" self doesn't fit in it. The steering wheel sits on my legs at it's highest adjustment point. Didn't make sense to me.. almost seemed like something wasn't working or was wrong... but it definitely adjusted down but no further up.
Really? i'm 6' 4" with very long legs and I daily drive a 2013 Tacoma, try and find another one to sit in it before you turn it down! Very reliable and great vehicle
I think I will head to the local Toyota dealership to give it another try. Sometimes, those car show vehicles are screwed up since so many people sit in them throughout the show. I did try adjusting everything (seat all the way down -- steering wheel column tilted all the way up).
Came to hear about the thunk of the door. Was disappointed that they didn't live up to the standards set by other trucks on the market. Hopefully Toyota steps up their door game on future models. :)
I love your reviews. Redline Reviews, Testdriven TV, and AlexonAutos are my favorites, but I have a question: What's the purpose of the ECT button if the transmission already has a sport mode?
Yeah I don't think there's any sport mode in this truck at the way it drives LOL the ECT button is to keep the revs up & just help with towing going down grades, but if you're going down a very steep grade like the ike gauntlet you would want to put it in "manual" S mode & probably kick it down 1 more ⚙️ so you don't smoke your brakes.. Also ECT power button helps with the transmission hunting for all the different gears, fuel mileage is a lil worse tho...
On the new Tacoma's you complain about not have a rear step and i agree. I did find they have an option for one so when you buy one you should add it like i will be doing. Thanks for the good reviews.
I test drove a 2017 and a 2005. I agree the torque in the new one isn't there. I think it's due to the auto tranny program to be economical. my wife's 9 speed in her 16 MDX is the same until they updated the computer. I've got a manual on reserve as all the reviews seem much more positive.
Is the limited as much capable as the trd??? I mean it does have 4x4..it does have the same motor, same hp and same torque..might be better on gas also right??
I love Tacoma's, but less power and torque is extremely disappointing in a truck; and Toyota not really addressing the seat positioning issue is going to make me skip these newer ones until Toyota fixes those.
Great review, I think ill keep my 08 TRD off road for now .Wouldnt want to give up my power or my gas mileage I'm getting 23 all day long 4x4 or 2 wheel.Do like the leather seats on new though.
You failed to mention the standard GoPro feature on the Truck and you never highlight the tech on the rearview mirrors which are important to many drivers as a needed feature.
how come we never see Toyota hilux in America ? when I traveled to Dubai it was there and there's a lot in Nigeria , any one mind explaining this to me ?
Because Americans wouldn't buy them enough to justify bringing it in. I haven't seen them too many times during my trips outside the USA, but from what I can tell the Hilux has a bit more simple and less refined ride quality compared to the Tacoma. Also, the Tacoma is designed for more towing and less hauling whereas in other parts of the world hauling loads in the bed is preferred. The only foreign truck I think would find some success here is the VW Amarok which I had the pleasure to ride in once. Just as nice as anything here but a little more stubby for the smaller roads and space that you see in Europe.
Actually, I am pretty sure its due to the emissions on the Diesel engines in the Hilux. Most less developed countries have fewer laws regarding emissions. But I do agree, the Hilux is pretty stripped in comparison to the Tacoma, without adding much gain and with the US truck market it just wouldn't sell well.
Its a really nice truck. I'd buy the TRD Pro just for the heritage front grille alone. Though I would probably want that leather in the Limited. Technically the Tacoma doesn't have the option for a crewcab. "Doublecab" as Toyota calls it is different between the Tacoma and Tundra. In the Tundra you have the "CrewMax" which is their term for crewcab. While double cab is just a smaller four door four seat version. I guess they call it double cab in the Tacoma because its smaller than the Tundra. Other than that I don't know why they would change the naming convention when they already have a crew cab designation on the Tundra. I could see that as a bit confusing to someone who isn't familiar with the trim grades of these trucks. Someone coming from a Tundra to a Tacoma might see double cab as to small thinking that double cab means the same on the Tundra as the Tacoma when its actually the Tacoma's variant of Crew Max.
David Maglioli I'm pretty sure Toyota is about to sell the heritage grill as a separate accessory now that the TRD Pro is slowly rolling thru the US. So you can get any new Taco and fit the grill to it
I hope you can review the 2017 Lincoln Navigator Reserve to see how well that twin turbo V6 engine can deliver against the odds, especially the Cadillac Escalade 6.2L V8; I hope you can also review the 2017 Lincoln Continental Black Label with the 3.0L twin turbo V6.
Torque isn't the problem, the reason for the sluggish acceleration is the tuning of the automatic transmisson. The manual is worlds quicker than the automatic
Toyota should use the same V6 and 8 speed auto as the Camry when they refresh it with 301 HP and 267 ft lbs of torque better for heavier loads. It’s great that Toyota still offers a manual transmission so they shouldn’t take that away
Rumor has it that some of the underpowered complaints were due to the trucks needing a software update. Do you know if that was the case for the one you tested? I too was extremely let down by its performance when I first tested a 2016. Went back and tested a 2017 a yr later and it performed much better.
You said everything I said about the truck. Had one as a rental coming from a tundra, and that truck is sluggish as hell. But rides nice and has nice steering.
Nice review. Yes, the manual does drive better. It has a lower rear-end differential so it has more bite off the line. I tested both. The auto is kind of a dog but manual feels like a truck should.
According to the engine specs, the 3.5L V6 in this Tacoma carries the designation 2GR-FKS, if you look under the hood of the current Lexus GS350 and RX350, you will find the same engine designation with a slight change in the output numbers.
I watch all of the Redline reviews, I just got around to watching this one because I was working. Even if I don't like the vehicle, I still like watching the reviews.
new tacoma... european looking rear, newer (inferior?) engine, better interior and sexy new front... not much else going on... higher price. glad they updated it but the 2nd gen will always be the best one
Sounds like a crotch rocket when you rev it. I honestly don't see why people bother with showing this when it comes to trucks. You buy a muscle car for that.
love the reviews!but I could do with out all the ticking sound you make when you change topic, finish a sentence, or just breath. it kind ruins the review, I don't remember you doing this in older reviews
Soy, please grow a few inches, or assume that you are American size. It matters. Seriously. Also seriously, your reviews are very well done, but you already know that.
I was looking at the Tacoma and Ridgeline today. Ridgeline 19 city/26 highway and the Tacoma was 18 city/22 highway in its most efficient configuration. 17/20 in TRD sport. Tacoma is real nice but too small for me to fit in comfortably. Ridgeline is not supposed to be a 'man's truck' without a frame but it's as big inside as my Ram 1500. Ridgeline has high seating front and rear with headroom to spare. The Tacoma seats were down on the floor and I was still bumping my head. As a guy who no longer needs the capabilities of a full size V8 truck, the Ridgeline is my choice.
East Coast Resident ...Ridgeline sells are real low. Theirs a reason why the taco has always been the best midsized truck.in terms of resale value, reliability and looks. I wouldn't call the Ridgeline a truck.
Willy p the ridge line is basically a unibody. Like why buy a ridge line when you could buy a suv like the 4 runner or Lexus go or others. A lot nicer in my opinion
Respectfully I hate this review video I perched this same exact truck before I saw this video but the way you drive isn’t a way to keep the truck to last long
He starts out by saying you don't buy a truck to drag race but continually criticizes on and on about the acceleration. The acceleration is fine, believe me.

maiseydoodle
Want speed, buy a sports car.

4 years later and I love this review/test drive! Not many Limited specific Taco vids. Excellent job!

man i love this thing. not a huge truck guy, but i would totally buy this

You think that Toyota would add power seats, especially in a limited trim level. Just throwing that out there. Maybe Toyota will catch it.
Seth Chiaro calm down cpl.
They will for the 2020 model year. They already did just on upper trim levels
My dad got a 2011 Tacoma 4 door and has driven trucks all his life, this was his first Toyota and he says it's been the most reliable truck he's ever had.

I love your reviews. Redline Reviews, Testdriven TV, and AlexonAutos are my favorites, but I have a question: What's the purpose of the ECT button if the transmission already has a sport mode?
That's a good question, perhaps the ECT button could also function as a tow/haul mode. It basically does the same thing as a "sport" mode.
Elliott Manning It's not sport mode, the s is for "Sequential" shift mode basically 'manual' mode.
Yeah I don't think there's any sport mode in this truck at the way it drives LOL the ECT button is to keep the revs up & just help with towing going down grades, but if you're going down a very steep grade like the ike gauntlet you would want to put it in "manual" S mode & probably kick it down 1 more ⚙️ so you don't smoke your brakes.. did you wear the tshirt intentionally to match the tacoma's red or its prowess
Sure did ;)
Dom Measure your fucking garage to figure out if it'll fit. Jesus fucking Christ, just Google the size of the truck.

I agree. The tail lights remind me of the Raider. And yes. They must go.
Toyota should also return to the compact truck market.
I test drove a 2017 and a 2005. I agree the torque in the new one isn't there. I think it's due to the auto tranny program to be economical. my wife's 9 speed in her 16 MDX is the same until they updated the computer.

I feel like the truck would benefit greatly from a 4.30 or even a 4.56 axle ratio.
Good Review Of 2016 Toyota Tacoma Limited. 😁
would you still buy this truck for city use or would you get a different midsize truck?
Can you try to get a Tacoma with Manual transmission please!!
I know the brown leather trim is exclusive to the limited but could i get a trd off road with a leather package?
in 2018 i think you can now with the premium package
what song is that in the beginning?
great truck, outrageous price, same goes with all of these new trucks and suvs
V6 with stick is better than the GM offerings. If they offered the Colorado with Duramax and stick they'd kill it.
Love my Tacoma!!
beside amazon, where do u buy ur siracha shirt???
You said everything I said about the truck. Had one as a rental coming from a tundra, and that truck is sluggish as hell. But rides nice and has nice steering.
I paid $37,300 for my 2017 limited.
bru im 5,7 too and im not complaining, the acceleration is fine . you criticize the car through out the video . with that tight ass shirt .
Review the 2016 Toyota 4Runner !

I was just driving that car yesterday
you should do the vw jetta se 1.4t 2017
Can you review a 4Runner TRD next?
did u say same engine as the camry/lexus company? because its not the 3.5 in the Tacoma is a whole new engine only designed for the Tacoma
According to the engine specs, the 3.5L V6 in this Tacoma carries the designation 2GR-FKS, if you look under the hood of the current Lexus GS350 and RX350, you will find the same engine designation with a slight change in the output numbers.
+Redline Reviews. I see so it uses the 2GR eng fam from camry/lexus nice nice I thought different :)
Nice to see someone using a Sony ActionCam. Around GoPro, the world does not revolve!
And I have that shirt. And I have that Sony bag. Weird . . . .
I don't like how Honda made the Ridgeline's face a direct copy of the Pilot. It screams "mommy" to me.
well they did that because the Ridgeline is based off the pilot, and that meaning it's unibody
Alex Tran But did it have to be so similar.
Joshua R guess so. Just look at the old Ridgeline compared to the first gen pilot, they look a lot alike.. just like the new gen
Joshua R its shares the same platform

It's not a bed liner. It's a composite bed
Disk shift grateful.
God damn that so funny AF with the Vietnamese hot sauce logo !!!
what is the price?
they shouldve just put the 4.0L dual vvti from the 4runner instead of the 3.5
14 hours ago and still only 3.5k views? What the heck
Bubba Junior i think is depending on what car he is reviewing

Frontier????
The previous gen Tacoma is faster, the 3.5L V6 needs more torque.
To solve that problem I purchased the AFE cold air intake along with the throttle body spacer. It makes a big difference.

Do you like to say "now" a lot?
nice truck and very aggressive.

Brand new engine and still less torque than the Frontier, little bit disappointing.
