Ender 5 bootloader and Marlin update

  • The Ender 5 really made a great impression on me when I reviewed it, but unfortunately it still had an old version of Marlin without thermal runaway protection, EEPROM support for saving settings, or any of the other great modern Marlin features. It uses the same Melzi board without a bootloader which makes your initial update trickier.
    This video attempts to fix this problem. It features a step by step guide for burning a bootloader, and then pre-made configuration files to go with the latest Marlin 1.1.9. After this update you will have a safer, easier to use 3D printer. If you don’t think a lack of thermal runaway protection is important, please watch this: • Is your 3D printer a f...
    If you’re new to all of this, take your time, go step by step and hit up google for any issues. This is exactly what I did when receiving an error trying to upload the firmware. Google told me to try another set of USB ports on my PC, which fixed the problem.
    This video is correct for the Ender 3 as well, the only difference being instead of using my zip file, you would copy and overwrite the files from Example Configurations - Creality - Ender 3.

    You sir are a life saver. After replacing my original board, I received a new one in the mail and it came with ender 3 burned in. I couldn't figure out any of the instructions on the creality website. They are terrible. Thanks for the step by step tutorial. It worked phenomenally.

    Michael, i used your software with a few adjustments to install an mks gen l into my ender 5, also installed the tcm2208 standalone as per your other videos. works great and is very quiet. pointer for anyone doing the same, make sure for your x and y end stop you use x max and y max plugs if using this software took me a few hours and a lot of youtube to figure that one out. thanks again for your informative videos and insight.

    Just wanted to thank you for your video. My Ender 5 Pro failed on a Marlin firmware update for v2. I struggled for the past week basically jump starting the printer from my laptop.
    This morning I unloaded the items ordered from Amazon, the Uno and cables. Following your video the boot loader was recovered and v1.1.9 of Marlin put on.
    Thank you very much for this video.

    Thank you Michael for this great guide. Updated mine last night. I did run into one issue when attempting to burn the bootloader that I wanted to share. I had no issues loading the firmware with my MacbookPro, but for some reason couldn’t get the bootloader to burn when running MacOS. I tried multiple USB cables and ports on both of my MacbookPros, but it kept failing. I switched over to a Windows 7 partition on one of the MacbookPros and it worked.
    TL/DR:
    Had to use Windows to burn the bootloader, but MacOS worked for everything else on my MacbookPro.

    Loving the impartiality of your reviews, plus how accessible they are to newcomers. Looking to buy my first 3D printer, and your reviews (plus some googling) have me trying to choose between the Tevo Tornado and the Ender 5. Can you make a video (or series) for your recommendations for which printer to choose in different price brackets (using more criteria than just volume per dollar). Maybe also looking at upgrades further down the line like direct drive, self leveling, extruder upgrades etc? Thanks, and keep 'em coming!

    Hey man you make great youtube videos that have really helped me get started and mod my Ender-5. That being said, I really think you should disclose your modifications disable bed leveling and even more so disable abort print functionality from the LCD. I had to find this out the hard way after my nozzle made a permanent signature in my build plate.

    Awesome, thanks for this!
    Would love a stepper damper, driver and tl smoother upgrade video for the 5, especially the damper with a bit of a more in depth look at how you solved it on the 3 for the extruder. X & Y went ok, doing Z means raising the printer with some taller feet I believe, but the extruder when I fitted it, I had to flip the extruder gear so it had the grub screw side facing in towards the stepper. This was the only way I could get it to fit, but then the gear shaft appeared to bend quite severely as the lever and clutch would press against it, so I took it off again.
    I love the 5 in general, just needs to be silenced, the heatblock and psu fans in particular. Noctua with a buck transformer for the heatblock makes sense, was thinking about printing a 120/140mm fan duct to attach to the side of the printer to blow a ton of air through the entire base, then removing the psu case and fan entirely.

      Thank you so much for this! I don't know if I could have done it on my own.
      If anyone is getting an "unable to compile for sanguino" error, roll back to the previous version of Arduino Boards at the top of the board manager.
      If port access is denied and only one port is showing up when you move the USB around, restart your computer.
      @teachingtech I also set the z axis not to disable when a print finished or when the other three steppers deactivate, to stop the bed from falling. This is out of my skill level, but I was hoping you could add in some code to help with leveling. I tried to enable mesh bed leveling. I tried to enable it and I think it used too much space? With the standard Creality firmware, the disable steppers option would allow you to disable just the x and y axis, or all three axes. This was very useful for leveling because I could auto home and disable x and y to move the head around for leveling, but now I hit disable steppers and the bed drops a couple of centimeters. Do you have any advice? Would love to still be able to do this, or enable mesh leveling.

    Thanks for these guides, I've finally got my Ender 5 homing properly with an MKS GEN L board and TMC2208s
    For people like me, that might not have immediately got what is going on and are trying to combine your E5 configuration along with the MKS/TMC2208 video configurations... USE THIS ENDER 5 configuration as a base. Only change the BOARD_MELZI_CREALITY to BOARD_MKS_GEN_L and then go ahead with whatever other changes you might have (BLTouch, display etc)... don't make the mistake I did and start inverting axes to match the instruction on the MKS videos.
    Plug your X and Y endstop switches into the X&Y MAX sockets on the MKS and everything should go smooth.

    Personally I ran into 2 problems following your guide and it took me a few hours to solve, so I'm posting the issues and solution here for those in similar situation:
    #1 I used "charge only" USB cable that did not transmit any data, so the boards were not visible. Make sure you use "real" USB cable (if the cable is very slim, it's probably charge only).
    #2 My Arduino IDE used "arduino" in its programmers.txt setup file for "Arduino as ISP" template, instead of "stk500v1", so the board kept timing out when trying to burn the boot loader. Make sure it uses "stk500v1", i.e.:
    arduinoasisp.name=Arduino as ISP
    arduinoasisp.communication=serial
    arduinoasisp.protocol=stk500v1
    arduinoasisp.speed=19200
    arduinoasisp.program.protocol=stk500v1
    arduinoasisp.program.speed=19200
    arduinoasisp.program.tool=avrdude
    arduinoasisp.program.extra_params=-P{serial.port} -b{program.speed}
    Credit for the solution to #2 goes to forum.arduino.cc/index.php?topic=342977.new#new
    Hopefully, this will help someone from waisting their time.
    Thank you Michael!

    Thank you Michael. Another great tutorial and the free files are a boon. Will look forward BL Touch upgrade walkthrough as not getting beyond probe double-click with the .h files you provided for Ender3. B L Touch lcd menu items have no effect. Heads up as the new menu does not now offer disable x and y steppers for original manual bed levelling method. I have been running a Micro Swiss mk8 hotend and a glass bed for a month and am very happy with both. One last gripe about the new Marlin, it appears to chop the power to the Z axis after 2 mins when Auto Home has been run from lcd menu. This is a drag as with the weight of the glass the bed drops to the bottom of the leadscrew. Make sure to un// the line which defines the small z drop before homing, otherwise the stepper then tries to pull the bed down beyond travel. A few good thingiverse parts have surfaced. There are an excellent pair of struts to fit under the bed which kills off the diving board twang effect and a modded Bullseye fan housing came out a few days ago which works better than chopping up the Ender3 version. Hope this helps and saves you some of the time that you have saved me. thanks again Mr D

    Best help ever. Needed to flash my Ender-5 as it had problems. Could have done it with the creality firmware, but wanted to do something interesting. So installed the bootloader and moved to Marlin. Worked perfect.
    One problem, somehow when all done Z hight was 50%. So changed the setting in the configuration.h from 80,80,400,93. To 80,80,800,93 flashed again, which was easy with the bootloader installed. And all working as expected.
    Again thanks very much.

    This might be obvious to others but I'd thought I would share. After printing the hot end would move to the front left as opposed to the rear right as it did before. In Cura i had to change the End G-Code in the printer settings. I changed "G1 X0 Y0 ;Present print" to "G1 X225 Y225 ;Present print". Now the hot end moves to the rear right after printing.

    Pro tips:
    * If you don't see the pins on the Ender 5 then remove the bltouch daughter board. It hid them for me. Be sure to put it back after flashing.
    * If you see multiple similar options in the Arduino IDE for 'Board', 'Processor' or 'Programmer', choose the most specific. EG: 'Sanguino 1284p' over 'Sanguino'
    * If you see multiple similar options in the Arduino IDE for 'Board', 'Processor' or 'Programmer', and it doesn't work then try others.
    * If you're on a Mac, I found that I had to restart the Arduino IDE for it to see changes and even function correctly.
    * You do not need to have the Ender 5 powered up on it's own power. (That's not explicitly stated anywhere.)

      I have the same problem.
      If you have OctoPi you can do the following
      M503 - You can view your current settings. Might look something like the below (and other lines). Mine used to say Z400.00.
      Recv: echo:Steps per unit: Recv: echo: M92 X80.00 Y80.00 Z800.00 E95.00
      M92 Z800 - Changes your Z from whatever it is to 800
      M500 - It will write it to EEPROM
      M501 - It will load EEPROM values as active parameters
      M503 - Confirm that the changes have taken place

    I am seriously thinking about purchasing the Ender 5. However, I am not impressed with what now seems to be its limited memory size and having to choose which limb to cut off so I can add features. Seems in most cases, multiple limbs have to be sacrificed.
    What I was hoping for was information on how to upgrade the actual Controller Board to one that’s better and with more memory.
    Initial searches seem to point to this being possible.
    I understand that the intent here was to show how to improve what comes standard with the 5, however, it would be great to also show an alternative that gives a better controller capable of doing all of this and not having to comment out features. I’m worried that with the next great idea I’d have to comment even more out...
    This video was awesome. A bit fast paced for a beginner. But the beauty of it is we can stop and go back and watch it as many times as possible.
    Do you have a video or recommendation on a series of possible complete controller replacements? From inexpensive to expensive and what you get with each??

    Hi, Do you have the file for the blue weird looking thing behind you on the other Creality printer? I would like to try and print that if it's available.
    Thanks in advance and great videos with awesome info. I haven't assembled my Ender 5 yet I hope it doesn't cause me grief.
    Thanks again.

    I did finally get up the guts to purchase the Arduino uno board and update my Ender 5 and with this tutorial it went well. Some of the files and links have been updated since this video and you will loose the bed level feature. I was unable to find a way to perform bed leveling after the Marlin firmware update and instead went on and installed the TH3D firmware (easy after going through this update here) Even with the TH3D I found my bed was still a tad low and had to tweek the knobs up a bit higher while doing test prints. The process of doing this firmware update isn't for anyone who isn't pretty tech savy and it will possibly lead to big problems if you don't follow the directions in this video to the letter!! The main thing you will gain is thermal runaway protection, if you never leave your printer alone and never go to bed while printing you can forget about this. That said, never leave your printer alone anyway! But this is for that moment you walked away. You will also gain the ability to tweek your firmware and modify what you upload since you can do it over and over with your PC and the USB cable, the UNO will not be needed again just the UNO software on your PC.

    Hi Teaching Tech, you are doing great job, I've learned so much. I plan to upgrade my Ender 3 as you did. I didn't see any video from you about powering off 3d printer when not home. Could you please make video about sonoff and how to pair it with, for example, octoprint on Ender 3? It would really help me out. Thank you

      Investigating this right now. There is an Octoprint plugin (search PSU)already but I want it to switch off in the case of error and when tripped by an external sensor.

      I have an sonoff switch between mains and the PSU. When the print is done and I am not home it turns of my PI and after 5 minutes it turns of the sonoff switch.
      I placed a zone around my house, that way I can detect if I am home or not.

    My LCD screen on the Ender 5 has gone blank! I followed the instructions in this video, everything worked perfectly (including the screen) and I printed a few things. Then one day during a print I saw some garbled pixels on the screen, then next day the screen was completely blank (lit up, but blank). I tried connecting it to my PC and uploading Marlin again - there were no errors but it didn't solve the problem. I can still connect to the printer with Octoprint though. Where to from here?

    Hey ! Thanks for the Tutorial !
    I needed several attempts to get marlin running on my Ender 5..... 10 hours fiddeling around... :-(
    I noticed that the firmware is'nt optimal for the Ender 5. Especially one annoying thing:
    When you choose within the menu to disable the steppers, all steppers will be disabled.
    The original Firmware just disabled the X and Y axis so you can manually level the bed without pushing the Z axis...
    Is there a way only to disable the X and Y axis when choosing within the menu to disable steppers ??

      This is just a guess, but surely you could find the “disable stepper” command in the marlin firmware code and modify it to only disable x and y??

    Michael, I just ordered an Ender 5 but it has some differences from every single Ender 5 review that I can find online. The one I ordered has a Version 2.1 controller with the Atmega 2560 mcu, similar to the CR20. I am interested in adding ABL and possibly upgraded hotend with thermocouple sensors, later on. Do you have any ideas on how different this process will be for me, since this controller is different than any other Ender 5 review I've seen to date? Honestly, the main reason I ordered this was because the seller conformed through email that it did, in fact, have the V2.1 controller board. I do not know what else may be different from the original Ender 5. Creality lists NO information or firmware for this machine with this controller. I am very interested in hearing your opinions on it.

    I just install the Creality 3D Ender 5 New Upgrade Motherboard Silent Mainboard V1.1.5 with TMC2208 Driver purchased from Amazon. The board was a “plug and play” already configured for the Ender 5. The issue is the provided firmware does not have "disable x/y stepper" or "change filament". I’m at a loss as to how to update the firmware to a version that will restore these features. Thanks in advance for any guides you can forward.

    How do you update the firmware after installing the 1.1.5 board on an Ender 5 with a Mac? I followed your video (which was great), but I am stuck because it is setup as an Ender 3 now. I downloaded the hex file with the updated firmware from Creality, but I can't install the hex file with my mac.

    When I calibrated the extruder, I sended M503 to find out e-steps and answer was 93, and 3mm filament.
    So after changes to 1.75mm it extruded only 40mm. So the final esteps +273. Why the manufacturer did mistake with filament diametr? And besides it: Ender 5 connects to repetier host, but ender 3 not.

      I had the same problem when using OctoPrint, and solved it with a couple of plugins and a firmware update:

    Thank you very much for this video, it has been a big help in updating the firmware.
    I Had a problem with the direction of the x/y direction of the steppers. I had to make the following changes:
    I had to make the following changes, hope it helps someone:
    Un-comment the following in the configuration.h file:
    #define USE_XMIN_PLUG
    #define USE_YMIN_PLUG
    Comment out the following:
    //#define USE_XMAX_PLUG
    //#define USE_YMAX_PLUG
    Set the following:
    #define INVERT_X_DIR false
    #define INVERT_Y_DIR false
    #define X_HOME_DIR -1
    #define Y_HOME_DIR -1
    So it was a combination of reversing the homing direction and changing the PLUG to use the x/y min instead of max. If I set only one of those, i.e. PLUG vs home direction, it would try to auto home in the wrong direction.
    I also made the following changes that were added to the marlin 1.1.9 bugfix branch (there's a separate github for the bugfix branch):
    #define HOMING_FEEDRATE_XY (20*60)
    I can't recall if the homing feedrate was in the configuration.h or the configuration_adv.h. It has helped the slamming into the x/y stop switches quite a bit.
