The man is a born singer. The way his voice vibrates at the right moments...as he holds the note at the end...very powerful singing. Should have clearly won.

I just love Izhar's voice and no matter how much he dances he is still in control of his breath / voice and hits those high notes. What a performer.

The song improved qualitatively when the microphone of that groupie in the turquoise dress fell out of the range of her screeching. Who says that inanimate objects don't have a soul!?

Lets not forget Kobi Oshrat the composer of another legend-Halleluya-1979,composed and arranged this song.
Instantly recognisable Israeli sing and dance choreography. Blessed be the microphone that fell down in the right moment.
Israel is among my "top 5" countries,in the history of this contest.And this one,my winner of 1985!
No doubt, with 4 wins, and other top 5 positions, Israel is among the most successful Eurovision countries.
It just needs to avoid the temptations to send silly pop songs.

Israel should have won the Eurovision song contest in 1985.this song stayed with me for 36 years,love it.I have had the chance being there, it was the last time, we have had a Eurovision song contest in Luxembourg .
1985 was hosted by Sweden, Luxembourg was the year before

This is an outstanding vocal. Musical theatre students would do well to study how Izhar moves and sings so effortlessly at the same time. His technique is excellent and he finishes off each phrase of the song properly. The song is uplifting too, though you would always know it is an Israeli entry because there is a predictable choreography and staging around the 1980s and 1990s. Best song of this year easily and what a performer Izhar is.
I believe Izhar was musical theatre trained, his technique would certainly suggest that.
The microphone of the girl in the turqouise dress unhooks just before the first chorus, and then it just keeps bouncing...
And thank god it did. Many years later that girl married a Billionaire and was on the first season of the Israeli Real Housewives, where she admitted that the screeching "singing" in the first chorus was her, so her mic dislodging saved the rest of the song. She claims the dancers' mics were supposed to be on very low volume and barely noticeable, but hers was on too loud by mistake, which needlessly amplified her questionable vocals. She's still friends with Izhar Cohen and said she feels a bit guilty for costing Israel points and perhaps another win.
Notice how she managed to discretely tuck it in her cleavage on 2:50?

Izhar Cohen is a great singer. Aside of the politics I would vote for it, but back in 1985 (till 1996) the committees decided the result of the contest. A comment from a Greek fan of the esc.
A bouncy, upbeat song, infectious music, confident performance, colourful costumes, enthusiastic dancing, ropey backing vocals, and they even found the time for some 'na na na's. You can't get more Eurovision than this

This is a masterpiece! Love this song.. one of the best from Israel and one of my top 10 ever in the Eurovision Song contest history. The dancers did a super great job! Name on them?
The dancer with the yellow suit called Adam and after this contest he became a huge pop star in Israel
The dancer in turquoise is Tali Sinai Riklis and the dancer in yellow is Haim Cohen, known with his stage name "Adam".
It was marked down because the female backing singer can't sing, and is very pitchy in places.
It's also very repetitive in the final minute.
Wow - I hadn't noticed Adam in this before! I always loved the song and Yizhar Cohen's performance was off the charts!
Best decade of Eurovision the 80s.
It was when ESC still was Eurovision Song Contest. Now ESC should stand for Eurovision Best In Show Contest. ESC totally got out of hand after Jon Ola Sand took over. Now its all about lights and preformance, not about the song.
I personally feel like Eurovision made very big steps back into the right direction after the 2000s. They were what you described, all about bigger, more pyro and forgetable songs (doesnt mean there werent good songs).
But over the 2010s Eurovision slowly became more... serious again. Especially with winnings songs like 1944, Amar pelos dois and Arcade. I think there hasn't been a year in the History of Eurovision that didn't have a good song.
There will always be the over-the-top acts. As well as the not-so-serious acts. But they have been there for many many years. Look at Switzerland 1979 - kind of the first funny entry, espcially if you understand the lyrics. Or the Netherlands 1974 - also not one of the most serious perfomances.

@@mayamills5174 OMG Thank you for answerring one of my lifes greatest mysteries since childhood. This was my favorite ESC entry (i was born in 84, but my parents taped it and i used to watch it after kindergarden and after school for longer than i should admit) as a child. I think the sound technicians managed to hear it and mute her mic after the first chorus, which I've always found kind kind fun.
@@KjelsnesOffisiell I guess it's either an alert technician or just that during the second verse her mic dislodged and dangled far enough from her mouth to save the rest of the song from her screeching. Notice how she managed to discreetly tuck it into her cleavage at 2:50 ?
I don't think her screaming detracts from the performance at all in fact for me it shows passion.

1. Israeli song was sabotaged that year. Preforming on the side stage, volume of the back microfone was too high, lighting was poor.
However- The Back singer in yellow- Adam - became later one of the best & famous singers in Israel - ADAM
SVT's orchestra played so well - lovely arrangement.
My favourite year in the eurovision is 1978 and this song is so great the band members are cute l still listen to this marvellous piece even in 21 th centry love from turkey

Then I finally met him in 2019 when Israel hosted the Eurovision Song Contest when Metta won the year before . We became very good friends . I’ve been back to Israel many times . Never thought in my wildest dreams this would happen . It’s a great country. I’ll be visiting again this year . He is a great guy and well respected in Israel .
