Absolutely love Bruce Mitchell's presence and lifetime contributions toward the Durutti Column and what he does personally for Vini Reilly (in terms of management and simply 'moving him about')... Bruce' playing style is so 'utterly unique'! He doesn't rehearse the music - but rather 'he feels every beat' and is always spot on... I liken Bruce's approach to 'European (French) Jazz Cabaret Drumming'...
@@ediklau yes , singer , guitarist Folk but so much more. Try the album ‘One World’. There’s some great live stuff on TH-cam. Amazing. You can see influence on Vini Reilly Enjoy.
Bruce was drummer in Albertos Y Los Trios Paranoias before Durutti Column. A parody punk band that was actually better than most of the bands they were sending up! He's a great Mancunian character who went on to found Manchester Light & Stage Co. He got used to get me on the guest list for many gigs and clubs when I was 16. Getting on Hacienda guest list as a 16 year old in 1990 was really something.
One of the most underrated bands ever. I discovered this as a 12 year old I was really big in to new order at the time and I was perplexed at the music store in 1984 at a record stamped with the factory logo. I bought one to try and I never looked back.
To me very unassuming, in their prime and their finest moment. There is so much more happening between Vinny and Bruce by means of interaction in this live song than the ear and instruments would suggest. Just one festival, one moment in time and a priceless memory of two of the greatest ever musicians killing it whilst at the top of their game. Credit to in the skill taken capturing the cinematography. Thank you for this memory.
What this video doesn't show is before this song vini said now this is in remembrance of a great man Ian curtis and I don't want any of you guys to move at all... don't even blink... hey you stop moving....ok let's begin..
Love....I can't believe that I haven't heard this song for a long while...I'm in n my 50s and am selling my record collecting... and I can't believe how great it's gone.... don't want to yap too much.... but looking through my LPs and other 12 inch records....came across The Durutti Column.... Valuable Passages....looked at the songs and knew that I had to hear this.... freaking...I never saw them... but they did a great job on this live!
I've always admired Reni's drumming - but I'll go to my grave believing that Bruce Mitchell is the finest drummer to have ever come out of Manchester. 4:48 and what follows is amazing and it's clear that Bruce enjoys playing it as much as I enjoy listening to it.
Shame Durutti never brought a singer in because they wrote some great stuff. Vini should have concentrated at what hie was brilliant at, playing guitar and left the vocals to someone else.
I do not want to be the guy pointing out basic timeframes, but this song was composed in early 1981 (this gig is from that summer) as a tribute to Ian Curtis, the Joy Division's singer from their same music label, who killed himself in 1980. Sonic Youth schizophrenia was released in1987, 6 years later. I do not believe in ripping off, when we are just a combination of influences, although sometimes it's just plagiarism and not inspiration from. But if anyone ripped off someone, it's Sonic Youth.

He has been the meaning of happiness in my life for many moons now :-)

This band sucks
Been playing this on a loop all night.
I can't get tired of hearing, I can't get tired of watching, the great Vini, Mitchell's catharsis, wonderful!!!
I want to be as happy as the drummer is at 5 minutes in, he looks so full of bliss and comfortable

Unbelievable, this performance. Can’t describe, legend.
so true! Just two of them/! god..
This is a song Vini Reilly wrote for Joy Divisions Ian Curtis a year after his suicide.
oh I didn't know... Thanks
If you now read the lyrics they will be clearer
I believe there is some kind of critique to New Order too (... “same old order” ...). I think I read something about it too.
@@fabionick4230 I believe this song was written before “New Order” was formed, could be wrong.
Love the drum beat in this song.

The song that can be put at the end of a Bourne movie. Nothing but pure art and talent.

So hypnotic with the drums too, my geetar hero
Temazo, la batería tiene un ritmo brutal y el riff de la guitarra es adictivo! La prefiero a la versión del disco, gracias por compartir!
Tal cual, majo.
Please wait for 5.07 when Bruce the drummer has a giggle with himself i watched this nearly 40 years ago in 1981
thank you for the tip :) Loved to see it now

Me too. Sometimes I put it on and immediately stop it, 'cause it's too much, I need to be really on good spirits to listen to it. It's so beautiful.

Finland. This vid was on YT years back from another poster, who clearly identified it as that time and place.

What did the roadie ask him at 3:57?
"Is it okay uploading this on youtube ?"
Does anybody know the name of the video tape this is from. I seem to remember it was a festival. I think it was an Ikon FCL production.
