  • Vini Reilly is a revered British guitarist and leader of the group The Durutti Column, the first signing to Tony Wilson's iconic Manchester label Factory Records. In this interview he discusses his memories of The Smiths during the early 1980s and his collaboration with Morrissey on his debut solo album, Viva Hate.

    I wish Vini would get the recognition he deserves. At least John Frusciante acknowledged his greatness.

      I have been so beholden to the greatness of Johnny Mar. And it wasn’t until this morning that I bothered to consider the guitar greatness of the Morrissey musicians involved in the solo stuff. And took a hard to listen to the greatness of Vinny Riley. He is one of my new guitar hero’s.

    I have very much respect for this man, he is just as good a musician as Johnny Marr, definitely one of the best guitarist in world.Its very sad he is not recognized for his work.

      Vini and Marr are like apples and oranges. I believe they would both agree. Vini and Marr are "fookin" geniuses. They both play their own style like no other. It is not a matter of who you like the best. I love them both. Both are underrated geniuses IMO. I don't like Manc's but when I do it is Factory Artist. Just kidding a bit.....Liverpool fan rant. Please forgive.

      Vinny did very good work with Morrissey, Johnny Marr was first and masterful but both their work is essential to us admirers.

      Morrissey was in Vini's band before the Smiths and before Moz's solo career. Other artist from that band went on to the Cult and Simply Red.

      I think it depends on what you mean by a 'guitarist'. Marr's definitely better [or was] than Vini at writing catchy and melodic songs as Vini himself says in this interview, but I think even Marr would agree that Vini is a technically superior guitarist.
      Reilly can play anything from rock and roll to classical and everything inbetween, he really is one of the greatest guitar players ever to come out of Manchester. Apart from the songs on Viva Hate, he's never really written anything that's likely to trouble the charts though. I love them both equally, for different reasons.

      He kicks the shit out of Johnny Marr, that is why Viva Hate sold more albums than anything by The Smiths. Check out the Durutti Column LC album, it is beyond Brilliant, especially for 1981

    The only man who could step in and take over from mr Marr, if only Morrissey would have kept him close I would have still been buying his music. Vini your a gentleman and a wonderful guitarist, after years of listening to viva hate I now realise why its so good!

    • @vintagegibbon
      @vintagegibbon ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There is only one wig. It is shared between Vini, Johnny Marr and John Squire. Without the magical powers that this wig bestows upon the wearer, none of these men can play a single note. Rumour has it that Tony Wilson once tried to sign this wig to Factory Records.

      apparently lots of famous men start taking finasteride usually in their 20s ..just started on it recently myself it's meant to stop your hair falling out haha not sure why it's not more common in everyday men as it's only about £13 a month to take - not much more than a standard prescription.

    I could write the most amazing guitar solo ever to Blowin’ In The Wind, and it would still be Bob Dylan’s song. It doesn’t matter that the original is a 3 chord folk song. You didn’t write the songs on viva hate and now you want to claim authorship because the rest of your career is forgotten. Naming your band Darutti Column was career suicide. Dwell on that
