Hey Heath. I remember, and miss, walking into a Best Buy or Future Shop and seeing rack after rack (after rack) of media. In some cases almost 25% of the store. Now you're lucky to find a store with a few shelves.
I miss those days too and have such fond memories of shopping in brick and mortar during the early DVD days, but then I think to myself "how could any store possibly stock all of these new releases?" It would be completely impossible to even browse the dozens of new weekly titles each week, and the stores would have to be the sizes of warehouses to fit it all! Or, they'd have to stock so few of them (for shelf space) they'd sell out immediately on release day. I'm kind of glad I don't have to worry about it and they come straight to my mailbox! But yes, those were some magical days.
I remember shopping at F.Y.E back in the days (circa, 2006)😎, they used to have one massive shelf just for the Rap/Hip Hop category alone and than the last time I went, I was disappointed when I found out they only had one small shelf with very few selections of CDs! 😥
Same. I went into a Best Buy last Christmas for the first time in years and was shocked to NOT see the rows of CDs and DVDs/Blu-rays. Found out later from someone who works for BB corporate that media is largely sold online only to make space for appliances.
I went into Best Buy (one that had a decent enough media section) and was utterly gutted to see that the media section was literally like two narrow metal racks with it's bones picked. I was last in that BB less than a year ago. WTF happened?
Not to beat a dead horse, but I still can't get past the mindset (ten years isn't that long ago to me) of being able to walk into a single store get most of the movies I want and pay in cash. It's great that all this stuff is out there, but I have a hard time remembering (I do sometimes) to go to all the various boutique's websites and to budget for credit card spending (as opposed to I can spend as much as in my wallet). I guess I'm the equivalent of my depression-kid grandpa who hid his money in jars around the house well into the 80s. On the positive side, your TH-cam and Patreon alerts are helping me.
I so miss the days of Video Rentals, in my small town we had like 2 blockbusters and 3 Rent-A-Flicks which were great for the main stream VHS that were out, but then we had this little independent Video Rental store I can't remember the exact name but they had the unique VHS copies. Where Blockbuster would get 20-30 copies of new releases this other store would have 2 but get 15-20 movies. This was where I was able to mind films from Fulci, Argento, Soavi, and several other Gallo films. You are 1000% correct that is something that we miss and the new generations will never enjoy....
@@CelestialWoodway maybe, but sometimes you have to have several services and you can only search for what you know about, blockbuster would allow you to walk the aisles and find stuff you didn't even know about. Personally I am not a fan of streaming, I like to own my videos, but that is a personal choice, but right now I don't have to subscribe to Paramount to watch my star trek I can plug a Blu Ray or DVD in and enjoy, also I don't have to worry about bad internet, but again I grew up in a time of video tape recording
The feeling is mutual, my family used to rent movies from some Local video rental store but I can't remember the name of the business. That's why it's sad (philosophically speaking), that Family Video closed it's doors at the beginning of 2021. P.S: What will poor people who live extremely below the poverty line do, now? (How will they watch movies?) P.P.S: I really miss those days, cause back then you could really have "movie night" with the family, these days you can't do it (cause the parents are on their phones "doom scrolling" on Social Media & unfortunately so are the kids). . .I am not even a people person and I still miss those times!
Yeah, I miss that also. Rental stores everywhere. We even had genre stores. We had 2 stores that specialized in horror/cult and another in foreign films.
I'm from the UK and its just been announced that Second Sight films has found the negative for The Hitcher (1986) so finally the UK will get it on 4k and blu ray. I have been waiting for this for ages. Originally saw the film late at night on TV when I was 14 and loved it and I don't think I've seen it since. Great channel here's to a great 2022 in the physical media world.
I never thought as a martial arts and Asian cinema fan that in the last 2 years I have gotten so many blu ray remastered movies with tons of features and great packaging! Eureka and 88 Films are already announcing new titles for this year! Great physical media surprises to come!!!
Great Video Heath, you hit the nail right on the head! When i was a kid Hollywood Video, Blockbuster was rows and rows and rows of movies, them stores are gone and have been for a long time. I remember walking into best buy and they had rows and rows of movies to purchase. The dwindling of movie selections in Target, Walmart, best buy, we can see that it will never go back to that because of the demand for streaming, big money for the movie distributors and streaming companies. It's where we are at but like you said we are dedicated to the cause and companies like Kino Lorber, Arrow Video, Shout Factory, Imprint, Vinegar Syndrome, to name a few and businesses like FYE, Bullmoose and Hamilton Books show us each and every day that it's not the end and that physical media is alive and kicking! Still.
I totally agree catalog titles are where it’s at . I’m so happy that companies like Paramount, Universal, Warner Brothers are putting out on their labels or boutique labels that I haven’t seen in years. Companies like shout factory Kino Lorber Millcreek etc. are great to see cranking out these classics otherwise they wouldn’t be available to view at all. Great video as Always Heath and Happy New Year to you and your family 👍🏻🍻
I’m somewhat encouraged by something you said in one of your videos on the future of physical media.Everyone was so into kindle ten years ago and ditched books in favour but then books came back.I’m confident that physical media will progress in the same way after all what comes around…..
Physical media companies are wise to the knowledge that less may be sold ...but there is a massive demand for.. collectors editions ..special editions ..remasters ..and two things are apparent 1..the prices remain high and 2..the product is a must for collectors....also as a side issue they are at least in the UK marketing at what they call the " mature market" and not youngsters ...who have more cash to spend,..
I completely agree - though its sad to see the decline of physical media in stores (in Aus we've gone from maybe 6 retailers in most shopping malls carrying physical media, down to 2 at most). But the content the boutique labels are releasing with massive amounts of special features is SO good to be a part of as a collector, and for it to feed content for people like you who champion the releases in your videos and written reviews.
Hi Heath. I love your take on the state of physical media for 2022! I’m so excited for the “year of the deep cut” as you named it. Kino Lorber’s release of “The Great Escape” is at the top of my list this year. Buckle up is right. Happy 2022!
Thank you! More than any other year that I can remember, 2022 is poised to blow us away with its offerings and anything is possible. I'll let the punters have their "worst of the year" lists of doom and gloom for clicks, the truth is that we're living in the greatest time for movie fans in the history of the biz and all the facts point to this year being the best yet. Happy 2022!
I'm a huge movie collector, been collecting movies over 27 years, since I was 12 in 1993, I own around 7,000 thousand movies spread across Blu-ray, 4K and DVD and used to collect video cassette but not anymore because of how bad the picture and audio would degrade over time, I really dislike streaming, it's not for me because of the horrible video and audio quality, plus you really never own anything on streaming, it can be removed from the streaming service anytime. I really dislike how everything today is going digital and how movies are skipping theaters for a streaming release, like there's no love or effort being put into them and for the movie collector like myself it's sad that I can't own any of these movies in my physical media movie collection as they're only available to watch on streaming platforms.
2021 was pretty nuts and that was during supply chain issues and continued COVID problems. I see 2022 being even wilder. It's shocking to see some of the stuff that is getting released on UHD in particular. Movies have really shifted to the video game model. The big games are still going to be in stores but the obscure stuff gets crazy releases from boutique labels and those collector's eat it up. I recently picked up "The Victim" on Blu-ray. A little obscure TV movie with Elizabeth Montgomery. Is that even going to sell 1000 copies? Yet, here it is. I'm hoping these companies are making money and there are enough of us out there to keep it going.
The Victim is a fantastic release with a killer commentary by Amanda Reyes. We got so many TV movies on Blu-ray in 2021, and they all sold very well, paving the way for 2022 to be even more impressive!
I consider myself to be very lucky to be born in a time when there are so many options to choose from in terms of physical media, whether it's movies, TV shows, video games or music. As great as 2020 and 2021 were, 2022 could possibly be even bigger. I don't know what to expect moving forward, but I'm definitely excited for the journey that lies ahead. You are absolutely right. It's going to be an amazing ride for sure. Otherwise, thanks as always Heath for another wonderful video. I really appreciate the hard work!
Thank you for mentioning the blu-ray release of Chip n Dale: Rescue Rangers!!!!!!!! I've been soooo excited about that and nobody else seems to care LOL. I really hope that this is a sign of things to come! How about a complete series blu-ray release of DuckTales, Adventures of the Gummi Bears, Darkwing Duck, etc.? OMG I'm so excited. I just hope Disney doesn't mess up the aspect ratio.
I noticed that Paramount Home Entertainment will be releasing Nickelodeon Movies' old animated films (the Rugrats trilogy, Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, and Barnyard). And since Paramount is doing that, I think it's possible that Warner Bros. Home Entertainment will release Cartoon Network Studios' first ever The Powerpuff Girls Movie on Blu-ray on its 20th anniversary.
There are so many classic films yet to see the light of day on 4K. It is so frustrating when films are released solely in the USA! If one buys the imported films at the extortionate price, the Blu-Rays are unplayable in the UK. This hardly helps the cause for physical media.
Getting rid of physical media would be idiotic. Perhaps the majority are casual viewers but physically medias have the highest quality in pictures and sound that streaming cannot match.Getting rid of physical media would be idiotic. Perhaps the majority are casual viewers but physically medias have the highest quality in pictures and sound quality that streaming cannot match.
Really enjoyed this interesting assessment for 2022. My wife and I certainly have some hope that some of our favorites will get some love with a proper 4k transfer. Main ones we want to see are Twister, Somewhere in Time, Apocolypto and Dances with Wolves.
The German import of Twister that came out last August is great. No 4K but totally worth it for the Dolby Atmos and Auro 3D soundtracks if you've got the equipement.
Yes! Walk the aisle, look at the cover art, smell the physical product! That was my childhood / youth. I still remember walking in the basement of one of my local VHS stores, where they had all the R-movies. Looking at the amazing art of the covers, on movies I had never heard about. It was good times.
Love the channel, Heath. Just picked up the Imprint blu-ray of The Naked Jungle. Heston in Secret Of The Incas, for me, is the progenitor of Indiana Jones much more than The Naked Jungle. That one's an eye-opener.
I agree. They're both huge influences...All the Incan stuff from Raiders, the costume, all that seems very inspired by Secret of the Incas. I think all the ant action from Kingdom of the Crystal Skull comes from Naked Jungle. But I also recently watched CHINA starring Alan Ladd and was blown away at how much it influenced the Indy character. His name is even "Mr. Jones." (My review of China:www.cerealatmidnight.com/2021/12/review-china-1943.html)
Enjoyed hearing your thoughts as always and I'm excited for the future. The last couple years have been very enjoyable from a collecting stand point and all the neat stuff that has come out. Physical Media Will Never Die!!
Unfortunately the people who make physical media decisions for the main studios all live in a California bubble. There is a ton of money to be made on physical media, but the studios all had the idea that physical media is dead because Apple removed disc readers from their computers. Also they live in an area with generally excellent wi fi which allows quite good streaming, this is not the case in the whole country, or the world. There will be a 'vinyl' style push back by people who care about movies. Streaming is still not for everyone, but the studios really didn't get that, and bought in to streaming as THE solution. The fact that Disney and others have 'U turned' and now have returned to physical media suggests that their eyes may be open now.
Now that Disney own's the 20th Century Fox's catalog, I"m feeling despondent about them ever releasing 4k discs of the original "The Planet of the Apes" series, "Aliens" and it's sequels, "The Fly "(1986 - also the original The Fly would also be appreciated), "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid", "Patton", "M*A*S*H" and "The Poseidon Adventure" to name a few I'd like to see off the top of my head. With special features and without DNR (like the way they ruined "The Pirates of the Caribbean". Too bad Fox didn't get these titles out on 4k before the acquisition, like they did "Speed". I would prefer a boutique label to put these films out, but we all know how Disney is with their properties.
Ive emailed Disney Movie Club about details on the Rescue Rangers release. I really hope they are the original uncut/unedited broadcast master versions, 4x3 (1:33:1) aspect ratio, and all episodes are in the right order. I got the Tangled complete series set and its fantastic. The quality is crisp and they put the tv movie before the series starts which is really nice. I hope they do more series releases. I want all of TRON UPRISING on Bluray, the Honey i Shrunk the Kids tv series and all of the other Disney Afternoon shows remastered as well.
I'd love to get some more classic TV series from the 60's, 70's, etc. on bluray in 2022 like we did in 2021. Land of the Giants, Bewitched, and maybe a re-release of Lost in Space would all be great.
I have by chance scored collection of shows at decent price from biglots anytime. like hogans heroes and gomer pyle. and then other shows i like recent any. so i just try get what want anytime if can do so at time.
I'm more interested in the pinnacle of what's been restored and made available. I still have a couple dozen films and tv shows on my list, but many titles never transferred to blu-ray have been checked off in the last year.
I appreciate the positive attitude. Things have definitely slowed down, but it's not so bad. Instead of struggling to purchase multiple DVD or BRD each week, now I'm getting maybe one or two items per month, but it's not bad. Many of the films I want, older Toho Studios films are still complicated as there are rights issues with Japanese versions vs dubbed as they were all done by different studios. Most have been released, but there are still 3 in MGM archive ( Gorath, The Human Vapor, and The Last War), that still have had no release since VHS in the United States. I'd love for a boutique label to pick those up for release.
Shoot dollar tree has been dropping so many mgm films lately. Then companies like uncork'd and high octane are all at DT as well. The boutique labels are killing it lately. Loving it. My boutique collection has grown like crazy this last year.
Absolutely love the fact more independents are going for the back catalogue titles and the more obscure titles too. I've nothing against streaming services but physical media will always be the one I choose. One title I would love to see released is : Hamburger The Motion Picture, sadly from what I've read is that the original negatives are missing...
my brother laughs at me for still buy DVDs and blu rays, let me put it this way - i see the convenience of getting home and literally hitting the netflix button, and off you go, as well as saving room in your house, i get it, but i'm not really trying to subscribe to like ten different services just to see one or twi things on each of them that are exclusive to that brand. also, i just grew up watching too many niche movies that i have on DVD or blu ray, that are most likely too unknown or hidden for these services to bother with. also, if there's a particular movie or show that i personally enjoy on one of these services that isn't all that popular, then it makes a lot of business sense to remove something that doesn't get a lot of traffic, too bad if i liked it, it's gone now. i might be living in the past but i still like to own things
Yes, I recall you saying 2020 was the pinnacle for physical media but then I felt that 2021 was even better! Couple things I don't hear you talking about much on your channel, Heath (though forgive me if you do and I've just missed it), but what are your thoughts on Vinegar Syndrome and Severin and the kind of stuff they put out? And also, are you a fan of silent cinema? I assume you are but would like some more coverage of that if possible. Cheers!
I feel like Vinegar Syndrome and I are not really on the same page, and that's okay. I bought their release of Rad and I have a few others, but most of the stuff they release is not in my particular interest. I like Severin a bit more, and this past year, I did cover Day of the Animals, Grizzly, Cruel Jaws, Strike Commando I and II, and the Dungeon of Andy Milligan. My primary interests are genre movies from the thirties through the seventies, and neither Vinegar Syndrome or Severin really venture into that territory very often, so they don't get discussed much on C@M. As for silent cinema, I'm a big Chaplin fan and I like some of the comedy greats like Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd, but I haven't seen a ton of silent movies. My friend Vanessa is a massive silent movie fan though, and we've got a new show we'll be doing regularly here all throughout 2022. Episode 1 is already shot and will be hitting the channel soon! Thanks!
@@CerealAtMidnight these companies are my cup of tea, but IMHO Severin releases a lot of releases focused on director centric collections, grindhouse cinema, and the video nasties, which I love. Vinegar Syndrome releases a lot of obscure lost since VHS days releases and Arrow and Scream Factory generally get most of the big name releases (I’d assume deeper pockets). They all do fantastic work and you should support who you enjoy
You're absolutely right it feels like the top days of the VHS era when everything was being released. And companies like Anchor Bay were releasing movies left and right remastered. Good comparison Heath.!☝😀👆
@@jeffreyhilliker9592 oh it's that so. Yeah Anchor Bay was big during the VHS early DVD days. Severin is like a spiritual successor. Heck I can call Vinegar Syndrome that too.
No, Bree likes me hairy, I was just tired of it. It was a nightmare to keep conditioned, and I was tired of finding things in it. True story, during the filming of a video, I found bacon crumbs in it!
@@CerealAtMidnight Ahh, I have the opposite problem. I love being bearded but my wife HATES it. Because of that I stay clean shaven but I literally dream about having a big beard. I have told her as soon as she dies, I'm growing it back!
I am a massive physical media collector. Having over 13K Blu Rays, DVDs and 4Ks. And well over 2K video games. But I for the life of me can’t tell what the hell titles this guy has behind him that are like a 100 plus black and white spines that look almost identical. What are those movies?
Oh, certainly! You deserve some back patting, though: you've been at it for a long time and work very hard. I'm glad you're kicking 2022 off with a lot on your schedule!
Dream 4K titles would be 1985's The Midnight Hour, Cast a Deadly Spell, Radio Active Dreams, Night Life, Hard to Die, 1989's Dr. Caligari, 3 hour long cut of Planes,Trains & Automobiles - if the deleted scenes of Friday the 13th part 2 were discovered so can this!
Just wish i had the time to watch all the great movies coming to 4k and Blu Ray the money to buy them all and the room to store all of them. One title i wish for is Unman Wittering and Zeigo with David Hemmings very rare movie hardly shown anywhere.
I believe that physical media is goanna make a come back. Perhaps with a new medium but I kind of get this from the growing collectors of VHS. People are realizing, that streaming and digital isn't always the best.
Arrow, Scream/shout Factory, and KL killed it in the final quarter of the year. So many great titles with beautiful transfers and just great packaging and stuff extras. First quarter is looking as good from these same companies.
What I really want to see on blu-ray this year is "Tender Loving Care" and "Frankenstein" (the 1992 TNT version). If those two get released, I'd be more than satisfied. Well there's also "At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul", and "This Night Possess Your Corpse", but those have negatives that are allegedly in extremely bad shape, but maybe a good quality film print would work instead.
Are those the Coffin Joe films from Jose Mojica Marins? I think they were available on DVD. Yes there's so many Brazilian horror films that haven't been seen here. During the VHS era some were released here but I heard they didn't look to good.
I'd also like to see the Aztec Mummy trilogy get a good Blu-ray release this year too. (Late fifties Mexican horror movies that K. Gordon Murray brought to America)
@@hectormontalvo5565 they are indeed the coffin joe movies, and they have been released on DVD even in the states, but I still really am hoping for blu-ray release of the first two films, especially since the third film was given that treatment.
@@CerealAtMidnight I vaguely remember hearing about those fairly recently actually, they sound super interesting to me, so I would probably pick them up only blu-ray if they were ever released on the format.
@@EpicGamerWinXD69 oh I see. Yeah the Coffin Joe films should look great on Blu-Ray and have scores of extras. Also the films of his protege Ivan Cardoso should get released on Blu-Ray.
The classic titles that are already confirmed for 4K releases this year guarantee it will be a huge year for physical media. I'm even more excited to learn about the mystery titles your sources have shared with you. 😁
@@robsavage3217 Ben hur, cleopatra, gone with the wind, the clash of the titans, the king and I, el cid, the fall of the Roman Empire, cool hand Luke, Khartoum, dances with wolves, the last of the Mohicans 🙏 I pray for a 4K release
Can't wait for the Panic Room (4k). I am really hoping that the Mank Criterion is real and comes out this year. Would really love to see Disney put out "The Luck of the Irish (2001)" on DVD/Blu Ray even if it is just through the DMC. Maybe some more streaming shows/films on physical media as well. Do like Zack Snyder's Justice League and just not put a digital code in the case to keep streaming rights.
So, last week, I ordered Abbott and Costello Rio Rita on DVD on Best Buy last week. Because I want to get all the movies from the different companies that they did the films at. And I got the original Warner Archive Release from 2011, today, but instead I got a MOD. Meaning I spent $15 dollars on a DVD-R. Hope it works.
Great story so far! There has been a lot of shows and movies I wanted to get a Blu-ray (and sometimes, DVD) release. Hanazuki, which is one of the shows I have been asking Sony Pictures Home Entertainment for a release, will be lost to time if there is no release.
Bro I keep saying more and more boutique labels popping up and thriving and I think at the end of the day, the collectors and people with a passion will keep it alive
Are they having as many shipping/processing delays in the movie market like what's going on with vinyl? I do miss being able to go into "fill in the blank store" and pay CASH for whatever media I want. Call me old fashioned, but I just hate buying my entertainment on a credit card. 2022 may be the year that Meatballs 3 get's put on a disc, finally! I'm so serious! I loved this movie as a kid, and finally found a copy on VHS this year!
Yes to shipping and processing delays. There are only a few places manufacturing this stuff, but the volume has arguably never been higher, and most of companies have to get in line behind everyone else to have their stuff pressed. If they miss their window because of an error or a delay, it could take months to get things back on track.
I was at school today talking to one of my friends about movies and how I love collecting them, and this one classmate of mine joins the conversation without reason and tells me that within five years, they will stop making Blu-rays and DVDs because everything will be digital. Unbelievable. I even told him that there are plenty of movies and shows that are not on any streaming services. Take Dogma for example. The only legal way to watch that movie is to buy the OOP Blu-ray or DVD. At least that movie is on TH-cam. There are plenty though that are even harder to find. Support physical media guys, never fully rely on streaming.
100 percent true. People that say they're going to stop making discs are really telling us how little they know about what they're saying. The disc market is still a billion dollar a year industry, and has become like vinyl: not everyone buys it, but enough people do to ensure that it's never going away.
I'm a vhs collector have been for years.the hipsters are now getting into my hobby.dont be surprised if corporate does the same thing it did with vynal .
Chip n Dale Rescue Rangers is finally getting a complete series release but only on Blu-Ray. Do you think they'll release it on DVD later on? I know they did that with Jetsons. Great video as always.
This is a great time for those of us who think that the 30's and 40's were the golden era of cinema. So much available and so much more coming out soon. I need a bigger budget!!!
I see you got the Smallville blu ray set too. Mine came with duplicate copies of disc 25 and disc 26 is missing. Still trying to get a hold of Warner Bros to fix it. 😠
What makes me sad is that many new titles are stopping including dubbing and subtitles in Spanish, it's a shame because North American releases have always included it due to the Mexican audience
I grew up with VHS and then moved to DVD and now mainly bluray although I still have a lot of VHS and DVD. I've never been into using digital codes and don't have plans to. Physical media is one of the things I enjoy collecting and keep them in the best condition I can. Does anyone else have times when a disc will not load and or skip/freeze no matter if the disc and player is in perfect condition? That's been an issue I've had with titles and most are WB releases.
Older double sided discs from WB have tons of problems and sound a lot like what you’re describing. Could that be the problem? They don’t use that technology anymore, and switched over to single sided discs.
I would pay a crazy amount of money for a good Nightmare on Elm Street box set like the one Friday 13th got. I don't understand the hold up on this. It's shameful
As far as I know, Disney has only ever put out two shows from the Disney Channel on Blu-ray and that’s Star Wars rebels and gravity falls, and now Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers of all things? If this does well for them I really hope we see you X-Men the animated series on Blu-ray, I wasn’t even born when these shows were airing (my apologies if I make you feel old) But I will sign up to get the complete series of Chip and Dale in the hopes that they put out more classic shows on Blu-ray or even DVD. I know at least a dozen shows I like to see come from the Disney Channel on the physical media from the early 2000s but I highly doubt they will because of Disney+, but then again Chip and Dale is getting a physical release, so anything is possible at this point.
I'm really curious to see what Chip and Dale looks like on Blu-ray and how it even has an HD transfer, since it was made in 480p, as far as I know. All of the other Disney shows like Ducktales, TaleSpin, etc, seem to have been made in 480p too, and don't have HD transfers on Disney+, so I wonder why Chip and Dale are different. As much as I'd love to see X-Men Animated get a Blu-ray (and Spider-Man, too), I wonder if it's even possible. I'd be there day one for both.
@@CerealAtMidnight perhaps they could do what the people did who made the complete series of Sonic X Blu-ray, and just keep it in standard definition on Blu-ray discs, it would be cheaper for them and save on shelf space for us (which as we all know having shelf space is about as important as what goes on those shelves)
Cool info on what may come out in 2022 on blu-ray but I got to ask you what do you think is the chance we will finally see a blu-ray release of 1981 Dragonslayer and Michael Mann's 1983 the keep on blu-ray this year and again cool info video on what most likely will happen in 2022
Dragonslayer could come from someone outside of America, and our best hope is they leave it region unlocked so everyone could buy it. In the US, it's with Disney, so chances are almost nonexistent, but internationally, Disney doesn't own the rights to it. I wouldn't be surprised to see The Keep coming from a company like Imprint in 2022, but that's total speculation.
Looks like you wear right about 2022 being the year of deep catalog titles being released on blu-ray and all I got to say is anyone that wanting some of there favorite catalog titles to be released on blu-ray are going to be very happy this year bc of what has already been announced so far this year and I am really looking forward in what we could see this year
Hi Keith. What i don't get is that all these people keep saying physical media is dead and yet us collectors get all these labels like 88 films !. So i personally think it's more alive than ever, although in a different form. But like you i hope we will get the "year of the deep cut" ;). Cheers man !.
It's not dead, it's just a niche. I have a video all about the people saying physical media is dead, and I hope you enjoy it! th-cam.com/video/FhkSuLenqV0/w-d-xo.html
Definitely not on 4K, but a Blu-ray is possible! 2021 saw a ton of TV movies getting Blu-rays, but most of them were coming from Universal, mostly released through their deal with Kino Lorber. Gargoyles is owned by CBS/Paramount, I believe, and they don't always license their stuff out. I'll just say the time is right, the market is ready, and if Gargoyles got a release from anyone this year, it would sell well.
Don't know anything about Secret of the Incas getting a Blu-ray (it wouldn't surprise me) but I do know that it got a DVD release in 2021 and that Heston's The Naked Jungle got the deluxe Imprint treatment just last week. My copy is on its way and we'll talk about it on the channel soon!
Physical media might also have had a spark with people staying at home because of covid. There's only so much you can watch streaming. Personally, I think my video collection is better than anything offered by streaming services. I'm sure your video collection is too, because you have a lot more than I do. I don't think physical media is going anywhere anytime soon.
I missed that Sherlock Holmes set. ..will definitely have to pick that one up. I didn't get the Kino Mae West stuff but I did pick up the Indocator Mae West box set which is awesome! Looking forward to Kinos early Hitchcock sets as well. Love me some Hitchcock. And we still have some great Warner Archive releases to come such as Flynn's Edge of Darkness. So when do the Warner Archive releases officially cease? Or is that unclear now? A shame if they do cease as they have been releasing loads of great stuff recently. And will we finally see a Mandalorian 4k physical release from Shitney..er....Disney 😜. I'm still waiting for the third season of Stranger Things to hit physical media to go with my season 1 and 2 4k Target Exclusive VHS sets. Maybe we can finally see that in 2022. More Kino noir sets is of course also welcome. Just ordered vol 5 today. Shout should do an ultimate Corman box set ! I'd buy that for a dollar ! 😁
I don't think Warner Archive will be ceasing any time soon. It's not operating at the capacity that it was before all those firings in 2020, but George Feltenstein is back in his role and they've been putting out a ton of great releases with the smaller crew they have. He was just on a podcast talking about 2022 and the possibility of venturing into 4K, so I don't think we have any reason to think it's going away now.
@@CerealAtMidnight Well Heath that is effing good news indeed. I thought the new crew in charge at Warner thought steaming was the new gold and physical media was no good? Do we know what changed their minds about Warner Archive ?
We don't know anything, and any Twitter accounts (I've seen some ridiculous tweets that cite "insider sources") prophesying doom and gloom don't know either. Here's what we do know: In 2020, Jason Kilar was brought in as the new CEO. His mission was to stop the financial loss at Warner and bring in some serious revenue. He did this by laying off hundreds of people and building HBO MAX into a massive platform with 73 million subscribers. Most of the people responsible for Warner Archive lost their jobs. The online storefront (WB Shop) was shut down. George Feltenstein, the head of the Warner Archive division was able to negotiate to remain on as a consultant and non-employee of Warner, so his work continued, albeit without his team, Matt Patterson and D.W. Ferranti. In late 2021, Feltenstein got rehired and is once again an official employee of Warner Bros., and has been making podcast appearances talking about the challenges of 2021 and the future of the Warner Archive division in 2022. Honestly, things were looking really, really bad for a while there, which is why I was so discouraged going into 2021, but here we are a year later, and things aren't exactly like they were before all that happened, but things continue to improve and films continue to be restored and released by Warner Archive. There's no evidence to conclude that it should go away any time soon. The discs are profitable, and the restoration work is important to Warner's overall health as a company. Warner Archive in 2022 is not what it was in 2020, but we have a lot of reasons to be grateful and optimistic!
@@CerealAtMidnight awesome.....thanks for the update Heath. Even though we don't know the full picture of events at least Warner Archive is still putting out lots of good discs. That's good enough for me and I'll continue to pick them up!
@@CerealAtMidnight you might be right! I'm just mad that the DVD has no special features. Arnold and Cameron recorded a commentary track for it that has yet to see the light of day.
DISNEY released some of those Classic releases like 20,000 Leagues, Swiss Family Robinson on Blu Ray BUT bare bones NO extras at all what happened to all the fab extras that we have on the original DVD 2 disc releases from a few years back Directors Commentary Tracks - Making of - all dropped from the Blu Ray WHY? forget it and the price NO Sir I will stick to my original excellent quality DVD release 2 disc sets full of extras BAD move from Disney why would a collector give up their 2 disc specials for bare bones CRAP! Disney the wrong way to go collectors are not soft such a missed opportunity for them what do you think?
I don't miss it. So much easier to shop online or rent streaming movies online.
I'm excited to get more into these older catalog releases in 2022. Not really interested in the mainstream stuff anymore either. Great update Heath!
The one time I was in the UK I hit an HMV (I had a region-free DVD player already). It was pretty cool.
I don't miss them at all. So much easier to stream and you have so much more to choose from.
(How will they watch movies?)
P.P.S: I really miss those days, cause back then you could really have "movie night" with the family, these days you can't do it (cause the parents are on their phones "doom scrolling" on Social Media & unfortunately so are the kids). . .I am not even a people person and I still miss those times!
88 Films have surpassed themselves with the Jackie Chan releases! Absolutely superb work has gone into the restorations.
I don't a region free player yet so 88 films is off limit to me in United States
As always, this was well-researched and I enjoy your take on the industry. Great job and thank you!
@@CerealAtMidnight A shame it is locked.
Hopefully the streaming only shows come as well im looking at the mandalorian
I'm finding good stuff from Goodwill, I just got American Psycho on Blu-ray for $3.99. It's sad that people don't want it but it's my gain.
I'm going to get all of those if I can find a sale.
There are so many classic films yet to see the light of day on 4K. It is so frustrating when films are released solely in the USA! If one buys the imported films at the extortionate price, the Blu-Rays are unplayable in the UK. This hardly helps the cause for physical media.
Do you know if films like the deer hunter 4K are playable in uk
@@Creakytomcat333 The Deer Hunter is stocked and playable in the UK.
Getting rid of physical media would be idiotic. Perhaps the majority are casual viewers but physically medias have the highest quality in pictures and sound that streaming cannot match.Getting rid of physical media would be idiotic.
Happy New Year to you, your family and the community
Yes! Walk the aisle, look at the cover art, smell the physical product! That was my childhood / youth. I still remember walking in the basement of one of my local VHS stores, where they had all the R-movies. Looking at the amazing art of the covers, on movies I had never heard about. It was good times.
I agree that this is the golden age of niche physical media, and that is awesome.
Jones."
(My review of China:www.cerealatmidnight.com/2021/12/review-china-1943.html)
Your videos are so much fun! For all of us who love the movies! Thanks!
I pray Streaming never replaces physical media 4K Ultra HD Blu ray disc is way to go.
I would prefer a boutique label to put these films out, but we all know how Disney is with their properties.
you make 2022 sound awesome... lets hope.
You are my reference for physical media!! Keep up the good work 🙂👍
Cheers, and thank you for the kind words!
Happy New Year Heath!
I'd love to get some more classic TV series from the 60's, 70's, etc. on bluray in 2022 like we did in 2021. Land of the Giants, Bewitched, and maybe a re-release of Lost in Space would all be great.
I want Hart To Hart. 👍
2021 was the year I bought most physical media EVER. I am already looking forward to the releases of 2022.
So excited Chip and Dale complete series is out! They were missing the last 15 episodes on DVD. Hope we finally get a complete darkwing duck soon
November 2021: A Lino Brocka film makes it to UHD in France (Bayan Ko). Idk but this seems like a great sign for the future …
It's all about choice! Freedom to watch things on your terms.
As a fan of Hong Kong and Japanese cinema, we had some fantastic releases in 2021.
Exactly. Support who you enjoy.

Surely not the nude Marta Kober scenes?
Just wish i had the time to watch all the great movies coming to 4k and Blu Ray the money to buy them all and the room to store all of them. One title i wish for is Unman Wittering and Zeigo with David Hemmings very rare movie hardly shown anywhere.
Love the video! New subscriber. Can’t wait to see more!
I believe that physical media is goanna make a come back. Perhaps with a new medium but I kind of get this from the growing collectors of VHS. People are realizing, that streaming and digital isn't always the best.
I guess we will have to hold on to our pocket books again in 2022!!!
Went to my local remodeled walmarts yes the physical media is shrinking more than ever only one small aisle of movies and two rows of video games wow.
Than you Heath! 2022 for the win!

Would really love to see Disney put out "The Luck of the Irish (2001)" on DVD/Blu Ray even if it is just through the DMC. Maybe some more streaming shows/films on physical media as well. Star trek lower decks season 1 is great! Got it on blu ray its awesome!

I’m waiting for meatballs 2.
Warner Archive is remastering and restoring a Brand New Dallas Blu-Ray Release this year.
I'm a vhs collector have been for years.the hipsters are now getting into my hobby.dont be surprised if corporate does the same thing it did with vynal .
I think Warner Bros. put out some great titles on their bluray Archive label. It'll be sad to see it go.
I don't think Warner Archive is going anywhere, but they sure could use our support.
Film Noir is awesome. Wipes the floor with CGI superhero rubbish.
@@paulconway384 Yes!!!!
Waiting for Disney to release Zorro on Blu-ray. Grew up with the reruns in the 90s as a 5,6 year old
Thanks for your Video
I am not a Streaming hater just saying Physical Media need too be stay alive 💿📀
I see you got the Smallville blu ray set too. Mine came with duplicate copies of disc 25 and disc 26 is missing. Still trying to get a hold of Warner Bros to fix it. 😠
What makes me sad is that many new titles are stopping including dubbing and subtitles in Spanish, it's a shame because North American releases have always included it due to the Mexican audience
I would love WB to release more Scooby-Doo physical media 🙏 to complete my collection🤗
Did you see they're releasing the complete series of Scooby-Doo Where Are You in a standard size Blu-ray package soon?
@@CerealAtMidnight awesome news🤗
Kino had a great year and I see lots more on the horizon coming
What’s the most random movie do people want on Blu-Ray? I want Osmosis Jones on Blu-Ray. Even though people didn’t like it, I thought it was fun.
Cool video man 😎!
...quick question...are u by any chance a seller on ebay? I recently bought some Omnibuses and the seller had the same name as this channel
Yep, that's me! I hope you're enjoying the comics!
Looks like you wear right about 2022 being the year of deep catalog titles being released on blu-ray and all I got to say is anyone that wanting some of there favorite catalog titles to be released on blu-ray are going to be very happy this year bc of what has already been announced so far this year and I am really looking forward in what we could see this year
and then the video's where in 4K oh my god! :_)
Accountability? Good for you thats something thats rare today. Another good video.
Do you think we’ll get the 1972 made for TV movie Gargoyles on Blu-ray or 4K?
Definitely not on 4K, but a Blu-ray is possible! 2021 saw a ton of TV movies getting Blu-rays, but most of them were coming from Universal, mostly released through their deal with Kino Lorber. Gargoyles is owned by CBS/Paramount, I believe, and they don't always license their stuff out. I'll just say the time is right, the market is ready, and if Gargoyles got a release from anyone this year, it would sell well.
Did I miss an announcement of Secret of the Incas releasing on Blu ray? I can't find any info
Hello Heath, Will Laurence of Arabia, 1962, be released on 4K this year??? 2022 is the 60th anniversary of David Lean’s masterpiece!
It’s already on 4K as part of the Columbia Classics box set, but I hope it gets a stand-alone release this year.
@@CerealAtMidnight Thanks!
Here's what we do know:
In 2020, Jason Kilar was brought in as the new CEO.
I enjoyed this video!
I am still waiting on the blu-ray release of True Lies :(
If it looks like the HD transfers of T2, we may be better off with our DVDs!
