    This is what people don't get, don't do pea/dot method on laptops because it's not a normal cpu/gpu. It's essentially a de-lided cpu/gpu meaning you absolutely need to cover every part of the metal with paste

  • @emilgillberg4506

    This is absolutely the way to go, already opened my laptop once before to re-apply thermalpaste, made no difference.. Opened it up to repaste and clean it now (6 months from last repaste), and found it was not spread evenly. I now spread it out evenly myself on both the heatsink and cpu/gpu. Thermals went from 95 on cpu/91 on gpu (stresstest), to 80-85cpu/75-80gpu (stresstest). No more throttling and works like a charm! Used NT-H1 thermal paste. To anyone having issues with temps also look up undervolting your cpu. Great video!

    Spot on.
    Just a line or a centre blob is NOT enough. We do have to have a thin layer, just like Thermal Grizzly recommends.
    Temps will effectively go down AND IT ALSO MINIMISES THE PUMP OUT effect.
    Great, great video. 👍

      I recommend to try phase-change material Honeywell PTM7950. It comes as a sheet and you don't have to mess around with any applying dots, dashes or crosses. Just cut out a piece the size of the IHS/core and stick it on. Also don't have to worry about whether the paste is too little or too much - it will be just right. In addition, it lasts longer, performs works better than traditional pastes and there is no pump-out effect.

    This video saved my laptop. Bought an MSI GE75 RTX2080 laptop for cheap. This thing was going up to 96 degrees while gaming. I opened it up for a repaste. I figured I can probably do it myself. Something just looked off when I took off the heatsink but I couldn't put my finger on it. Then I saw your video and realized what it was. Someone put thermal paste on the chips that are supposed to have thermal pads. I mean this stuff was everywhere. Cleaned everything off and applied new pads and thermal on CPU/GPU. Now it doesn't exceed 80 degrees under full load. Thnx a lot!

    I've just repasted my first laptop by using the spread method as shown in the video. The laptop was still on its factory thermal paste and I've had it for 8 years now. I was shocked when I saw The CPU temperature drop by 20*C! I was hitting 94*C under all-core load before and now it's 74*C. I'm so happy! The GPU temps dropped too from 62*C to 58*C (tested with Unigine Heaven benchmark).

  • @nori6237
    @nori6237 5 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    Yeah, when i overtighten it last year from my first attempt in repasting, the result are a really worst temps.
    But in my helios 300 (2017 15 inch) unit giving that more paste than rice grain result in a same worst temps, i get the best when i only do it like a little bit longer than rice grain, let it spread and when i open it next year (now) to repaste it again after i notice some thermal performance drop.
    I see the paste spreading evenly (probably due to the black tape at the heatsink trapping the paste on the cpu & gpu die).
    By the way, i only use 1mm thermal pads on all chips and it's working fine, but indeed there is some chips that need 0.5mm, probably cause of my thermal pads are elastic (thank god), otherwise i would crush the chip and brick the board.
    I didn't recommend using all 1mm pad on the chip, but if you're using arctic thermal pad, maybe your chips would be safe since that one are elastic.
    Overtighten and overpasting resulted in avg temps staying at 93-95 with max fan (game ark survival, high) for cpu while gpu at 85-90 all in celsius.
    After using considerable amount of paste and not overtighten it i got 84 avg and 74 avg for gpu all in celsius.
    That's funny cause i didn't even undervolt it, undervolt -0.125V giving me 75 avg cpu and 68 avg on gpu (120 core 300 memory OC) all in celsius, and that's damn decent for i7 7700hq + overclocked gtx 1060m (same game, ark survival at high setting).
    Ah i forgot, and thanks for your recommendation about thermal pad and paste.
    Your tutorials last year are really helping me out.

Been testing now with GTA 5 with optimal settings in Geforce Exp since i repasted and im on a stable 70 deegres on full load, so about 25 deegres down from pre paste. I tried AC valhalla as well played for 40 mins and got stable 90-93°C on it throughout without any issue. the temperatures are probably high because of the environment where i live in xddd which is about 40°C

    You recommend to spread a little over the heat plate as well, to make sure it is adhesive, but as the surface area is bigger than the die itself and uneven it‘s guesswork/messy. What would be your opinion to spread a thin layer on the die and then putting a „X“ on top of it?

    • @HotelHero
      @HotelHero  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The reason you want to apply a bit manually (with a spreader) to the heat plate is because of the micro grooves in the copper itself.
      If there are small gaps in the grooves where paste doesn't apply the air can create heat pockets and temps could fluctuate.
      To be honest your idea would probably work just fine and this is mostly my opinion as an OCD individual lol.

    Hotel Hero, can too much core overclock applied on the GPU over +170MHz for GTX 1070 can damage the resistors of the mobo? Since this gpu is soldered to the mainbord. Because if yes, that's why my laptop keeps freezing and cold shutdown itself when using it. All of my temps were right, no overheating. Even if I use stock settings, on battery, it does the same problem.

      @@HotelHero I said can TOO MUCH overclocking on the GPU core can damage the mobo/resistors/capacitors? Because my overclock was stable for 3 weeks and after 3 weeks of usage with these settings 170MHz+ core and +450MHz mem. The 5s freeze and cold shutdown stuff happened this Month first week. I tried everything, re-installing windows 10, swapping drivers of the gpu, using stock settings (no oc), even on sector or on battery... It still does the same problem, randomly freezes when I use my computer in action then shutdown itself. My battery is fine, there was no overheating. So can a higher oc damage the laptop?

    2:18 when applying liquid metal it would be best practise to apply a conformal coating to the resistors and capacitors surrounding the cpu and gpu. One coating I like is "MG Chemicals 422C Silicone Conformal Coating". If you live on the coast like I do, you could coat your entire board (excluding cpu/gpu dies, slots and connectors of course) in this stuff to prevent corrosion and short circuits from humidity.

    • @HotelHero
      @HotelHero  ปีที่แล้ว

      Conformal coating is also another method. I suggested nail polish because it's cheap and comes with an applicator pretty much built in. Conformal coating typically is in a spray can so if you desire to only coat around the die, it would be a bit messy.
      Also suggesting to coat the entire mobo I wouldn't recommend, as it can cause plugs/latches for ribbon cables etc to become stuck and if a component needs replacing it would make it difficult.

    • @rick5078
      @rick5078 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HotelHero 422C usually comes in bottles and is applied with a brush. You can still easily repair the board as you can solder straight through 422C. If need be, you can remove it with a conformal coating stripper. I did also mention in my original post to not coat/let it get on connectors, slots, etc.

      When you spread it you introduce air bubbles, you're supposed to put a blob in the middle or do an x on the die then when you apply pressure to it from the heatsink it will spread it. If it doesn't spread across the entire die there is not enough paste or not enough pressure from the heatsink.
      X method does actually solve the problem he is showing here. He mangled the x but that is the best way because its pushed out without introducing gaps of air in the paste. You get a good spread.

When the paste heats up for the first time it may show good temps but as it softens it may settle and not perform as good as it initially did. You may have to reopen and add a bit or adjust your thermal pad spacing to get temps to remain good.

      If your laptop isn't shutting down all by itself to protect itself from temperatures then there's nothing wrong.
      Only issue is at 92-95 C for most laptops the CPU will thermal throttle (slow down) to lower temps which can reduce gaming performance. It's not damaging just not good for framerates.

      @Rodrik Gregor Forrester Not at all dude...For a gaming machine about 70 to 80s are going to be normal temps while playing fr long hrs...That is why gaming rigs are mainly obsessed with increasing the cooling efficiency....U see the New predator helios 300, it already comes with a factory undervolt and the fans have been seperated and blades have been improved fr cooling...So around 70s and 80s during intensive gaming is completely normal....Anything above that is to be concerned with...😊😊!!!

    I have a laptop i bought 3 years ago and it started to reach high temp these days. I had a stress test on XTU and CPU gets 98-99 and GPU gets 90 degrees during the test. I am not an expert but it is hot as far as i know. I am thinking about using new thermal paste by doing things you recommend (which i appreciate a lot) I have a few questions though. 1) Should i try to clean GPU chips? If so, how? 2) Should i use that piece of glass to spread all over CPU and GPU? 3) Is it possible to use the same thermal paste on GPU and CPU? I hope you reply back, THANKS!

    Thx for the tips about applying paste. I have a G9-793 from 2016 I want to repaste, since it's out of warranty, and very very hot while gaming, but can't find any info about the thermal pads. I saw in this video the cooler for predator 15 which is similar, and wanted to ask about the thickness of the pads. Is 1.5mm ok ? are all the pads the same thickness ? and how much do I need ? 100x100 or I can get away with 2pcs of 120x20mm? thx in advance if you have the time to answer these questions !

    • @HotelHero
      @HotelHero  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you go 1.5mm you may have to re-tighten the heat plates once the pads get warm/soft. That way if the pad is slightly too think it will confirm to the chips and reach proper clearance/spacing.

  • @buddhafex

    So you don'y need the plastic tape stuff at all over the pins? I re-pasted my FX505DV yesterday and it made no difference, but I left the little tapes on my CPU and GPU. there's no paste underneath them, but I wonder if it would be better without them. My GPU maxes out at 86 degrees when playing Modern Warfare 2019 and my CPU is always around 89-91 degrees when playing any games.

    I've the nitro 5 2018 which has the same exact body and heat sink as the helios 300 2018 and same specs too. Just the fins of the fans are plastic.
    What's the thickness of the pads you used in the helios 300? I think there are 2 different pads, one kind of yellowish and the other white. Are both of them the same thickness? And is a 100x100mm enough?

    • @HotelHero
      @HotelHero  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@slavidimitrov2097 Since the manufacturer set thermal pads in the first place, replacing the pads with paste might remove the factory gap (the springs add the right amount of tension but don't set the spacing) so I'd recommend if you swap pads to just replace with the same size pad (looks like 1.5mm) to avoid any issues. You can grab Arctic thermal pads for increased conductivity and should be a decent upgrade.

    Hey boss, I just applied mx4 and my temps actually went up, but I think i know why. U see these heatpads (not the paste on the processor/gpu, i mean the pads on the heatsink). I fucked up and removed some of them, and i am not certain of the measurements. Right now I limited my cpu to 99% max power because my temps have been hitting 100. I wanna replace all the pads and redo this right, any advice? Are the correct thermal pad measurements super essential, and where should I be putting them? (thank fully I took pics of the heatsink when I first opened it so I do have the old factory default outline)

    • @HotelHero
      @HotelHero  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't own a Legion but atypical thickness for thermal pads is 1.5mm. I'd definitely not use the system until you get those pads replaced because those chips/VRMs can fry.
