Clay-colored Sparrow in breeding plumage

  • One of the over 40 species of sparrows commonly found in the USA, Clay-colored Sparrows (Spizella pallida) live in the centre of the continent. In the US they breed mainly in Montana, North and South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan. These sparrows migrate south for the winter, going to southern Texas and Mexico.
    Their song is a series of rasping buzzes, which is a common sound during summer in their prairie habitat. Although quite common, this species has been in decline the last decades.

      There are many more species is Sparrow in the US, this one has a more limited occurence.
