My father and moving to Cambodia

  • This is a short video unlike my normal uploads. With the sacrifice of my mother and father; our family moved to Cambodia in 1996. When first arriving in Kampot my father heard of a family living up in Phnom Doung. There my father ventured up and met Siang who had "claimed" the mountain to be his after the Khmer Rouge. Here my father and I try to track him down after last seeing him 10 years prior.

    I ended up in America because of people like your father. I honestly don't know if i'd be alive today if it weren't for the church that helped bring us here to the US.

      That’s not the truth! Educate yourself better next time! First of all You do have merits that’s why you’re alive!
      The truth is if you really want to blame!!! 1. The foolish king, 2nd. Communist China and 3. The Vietcong. These three are the true perpetrators that causes Cambodia to collapse in 1975! I should know cause I did my research for those that killed my father and my relatives! I been through the Killing Field myself from 1975 to 1979. Nothing has changed cause Khmer leadership always foolishly make dumb political moves. To this day we are stilled under the Vietcong and China they never freed Khmer. You should know this, It’s all about the power to control and land grabbing.

    Hey man, ive been watching your vids for quite a bit now. Im khmer-american and was born in the states. After watching your vids it really makes me want to go back to my roots and interested in my country. Its really untalked about how a lot of the khmer-americans here in the states dont care about their backgrounds and lose their language. Here has its own stigma/issues with being “too American” or “too foreign.” Anyways, your khmer is really great. Definitely speak way better than i do lol. 👍

      It is very sad that most khmer people don't speak Khmer language to their kids also teach them reading and writing in khmer,teach them Khmer history.If we don't change this behavior,our culture, tradition, religion, language will disappeared in the future.

    • @iamgem
      @iamgem 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Sombokeuth Parents try their best to teach their kids Khmer but sometimes its too hard when they’re only encouraged to speak English in schools and to their friends. When i was younger my parents always spoke khmer to me but i’d only respond back in english. Overtime you lose the ability to speak but can still understand some bits and pieces. Now that im older, ive been picking the language back up. My roomates are khmer and were born and raised in Cambodia so ive been learning a lot more from them. Also sometimes older generations dont want to teach much about the history because they were very traumatized by the Pol Pot regime. My parents wont open up about their life in Cambodia because of that reason. Our nation lost so much during that time.

    • @Sombokeuth
      @Sombokeuth 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@iamgem My mom speak to me in Khmer at home ,my siblings speak Khmer,we always speak Khmer at home,parents must try harder to teach their kids, don't give up.Very sadly majority of Khmer parents speak English to their kids.Khmer kids becoming Americanized is bad,no conscience, disrespectful to their elders, don't know Khmer culture, language and tradition. History has good and bad but it's part of our culture,it must be taught no matter what,I look at Indian and Chinese people,they speak their language to their kids,teach them reading and writing to their kids,also their country history, Chinese and India history is way worse than Cambodia,over 50 millions Chinese people dies during Mao time, millions of Indian die of starvation and genocide by England.Good or bad history is taught to young children so this horrible killing will never happened again.
