      Turrican II pleases me greatly. My Best platformer in the universe on Amiga, closely followed by Rainbow islands on SMS. Had a good chuckle at the outtake. :) Good video, keen to see where you go with it. Hopefully inspires me to pull my 1040stfm and falcon out of storage.

    You seem to be the same type of collector that I am. I started with a ZX Spectrum back in '83. Due to the lack of money at home, the Spectrum remained my computer until the late eighties. Then I got my first 286! I'm now collecting everything I wanted but could not get, including an Atari 1040STFM. Mine was like new when I got it. The guy who owned it, wrote his thesis on it and it went to storage after that. Keep up the good work, I really like your channel!

    Dungeon Master comes to mind when we talk about ST games. You could try to get your hands on the Super Pack or Power Pack disks that were bundled with STs. They’re not necessarily the cream of the crop but give a nice repeesentation of what the ST had to offer.

    I love my STfm, and that's coming from an old Amiga holdout. An STfm with a Gotek is such a fun gaming system. The one thing I would recommend doing is making a short "extension cord" so that you can easily access the joystick ports from underneath the keyboard. (Especially useful if, like me, you're using a USB to ST mouse adapter)

  • @ExplosiveAction

    Love the ST. I'm in Sydney and grew up from 1988-1993 with my 1040 STFM, playing games, making games. I still have it and it still works, except the floppy which I've swapped out with a gotek. The Action Pack of 20 games that came with some STs is a good starting point. Dungeon Master is a classic too.

    Love the Atari content!! Thanks for showing some love to my favorite! Not exactly exclusives to the Atari ST, but there are a few games that take advantage of the Midi ports for music. Games like Origin's Ultima III and Ultima IV outputs the music content through the midi out so you can have both in game effects as well as the music. Easiest way to use this is to hook up a midi input capable keyboard (can generally find them pretty reasonable $35 USD here in the states). Also as mentioned before, Dungeon Master was the "killer app" in the mid-80's for the Atari ST.

    The "Jackintosh". Legendary computer. The first computer to come out of Atari after Jack Tramiel took over. It's 16 bit, runs GUI with MIDI capability - and Atari got it out before the Amiga. I never owned one, but it was a great computer at a very competitive price. It's always seen as the poor cousin to the Amiga, but it was a great computer. PS You are building an incredible collection of retro computers. Great video. Sad you missed out on the Commodore 64 era - as it was probably the best of all of the retro machines - but I'm biased I grew up with one and still have my original - and playing Pirates on it go me through COVID lockdown in Melbourne!

    Mass storage makes a huge difference. I recently bought an UltraSatan for my Atari STE and it makes it a much more usable machine. Also a VGA adapter is a nice addition as the monochrome mode works on standard VGA monitors.

    • @MrLurchsThings

      Yeah I agree, I used creme on my 1040STE and it marbled really badly, I ended up having to paint the case, looks decent for the most part, still have to do the keys but will be using liquid peroxide for those I think.

    The one's nowhere near as yellow as the ST that Adrian Black recently restored, that thing was so yellow it was almost orange. The mouse was almost brown. He said it had been exposed to cigarette use residue, so that probably didn't help.

    I'm in the same boat as you - picked up an Atari 1040STFM in a job lot of old computers and don't really know what to do with it. Yellowed and dirty but seems to work fine. I had an Amiga many years ago and looked down on the Atari as a lesser machine.

    • @ghenghiskhan9473
      @ghenghiskhan9473 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The irony of Amiga Fanboys and Girls! Atari ST was born from Commodore Amiga development and the same teams that Jack took with him, when he set up Atari Corporation! Atari ST is a much better looking machine and has its own character. I own both platforms and the STE is a great machine, just came too late. The Falcon could have wiped the floor with the A1200 if it had been introduced earlier.

    • @seanwilliams4087
      @seanwilliams4087 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ghenghiskhan9473 Well, no. The group that made the Amiga left Atari before the ST was made. Atari nearly got the Amiga chipset but the Amiga team were able to pull out of the deal. That pissed off Jack and the lower featured ST line was his attempt to play catch-up. The Amiga 1000 was both better looking and more practical than the ST (separate keyboard, box to put the monitor on top, better mouse/joystick location, better FDD location. Commodore mishandled the Amiga product and it's possible it would have been a greater success had Atari managed to keep it, but that's all just speculation.

    The only game I remember vividly from a friend's ST was Star Trek: Rebel Universe. That game looked absolutely amazing on the ST (and horrific on the PC). I was rubbish at it either way, but damn it was pretty amazing at the time what the ST could do that my PC (a Tandy 1000SX at the time) couldn't.

    I don't recall my 1040STF taking THAT long to get to TOS if no floppy was in the drive, but it has been a very long time and I may be wrong. As far as games, I don't recall favorites, but since developers usually ported their games to both the ST and Amiga, if you have Amiga favorites they may be available on the ST, too, like Turrican for instance.

    • @brianv2871
      @brianv2871 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It does take a long time if you have a drive hooked up and no floppy in the drive. I didn't remember it originally either but it's probably because back in the day, we always had a floppy in the drive (or a hd hooked up), but after hooking back up my original st and not having working floppy drive, i rediscovered the slowness 😀

    *Wings of Death* (vertical shooter with great soundtrack).
    Also try *Dungeon Master, Chaos Strikes Back* and *Captive* . Still some of the best dungeon crawler RPGs out there.
    *Zombi* the first game Ubisoft ever released. Dawn of the Dead vibes in a tactical fps puzzle solver.

    Curious question: I see that you're using the "old version" of retrobrighting, and I'm curious as to why? I know The 8-bit Guy eventually switched to using the liquid form of peroxide because the version that you're using is notorious for leaving a 'marbling' effect on the plastics after use. Have you tried using the newer method in a tank with either natural sunlight or with artificial lighting? The results tend to be very uniform. Thanks!

      Not sure what lurch used since he's in Australia, but here in the states, generally what people use is Salon Care 40 which you can get from Sallys Beauty which is a chain store. They have both creme and clear, if you're good then creme like lurch used works and overall cheaper, but i personally use the clear mixed with water and soak things because it's less risky if you aren't on top of it constantly massaging and watching. Plus clear is better for keys as you just throw them in a bag with a mix of clear and water.

    The main ST claim to fame was MIDI support. If you are looking for something novel to do with the with it, get hold of some MIDI to USB cables and set up a PC as a MIDI device emulator (Munt for instance) (assuming you don’t have any dedicated hardware). Then run some of the original sequencing and notation software available. I have not seen anyone do this on TH-cam before.
