Basically applying max pitch up after letting your supercruise approach drop well below the old safe 0:06 rule (typically between 0:04 and 0:02 depending on ship and final gravity well) can bring the speed back under control in time for a safe drop. Going into a corkscrew is a way of maintaining max pitch up while still controlling your direction.
