    The section about refining the selection was very helpful. Much easier to make brushes than I thought it would be.

    Hi Ronnie,
    That was a great tutorial. I am signed up to be a beta tester for AD for Windows, so I am really stoked for it to be released. You are a really good teacher. I look forward to learning more from you.

    Thanks! I am just learning Affinity designer as I was able to get an ipad for my birthday I love how it is layer out but coming from Illustrator to this is a bit of a challenge lol. So thank you very much for this now to transfer what I learned to the ipad lol

    Hey Ronnie. If I wanted to make a "glitter brush" or possibly a "bubble brush" would I go about it this way. I'll tweet you couple of pix to show you how far I've gotten, and WHERE I'm trying to get. My example is before I figured out the miracle of the selection brush, which, not knowing anything about Photoshop effects and needing to cut images out for promo work but not knowing how, was AWESOME!! Thanks!

    Ronnie,
    Thanks for trying to help us out. One thing you fail to mention and is a source for a lot of confusion are the steps involved before you start making the brush (i.e. importing the image, what layer are you putting in it). I think it would be helpful starting from scratch. Thanks again. I am subscribed and love the videos. Keep up the great work.

      Had the same question also. He says how you can make them yourself, but then he says go find a photo on the Internet. Not sure that would work with copyright LOL!

    Thanks for this. I initially had trouble with affinity's "select sampled color" being clickable - even when in the pixel persona. It looks like a few others may have had the same trouble. I learned that the imported smoke photo must be a PIXEL layer (add pixel layer instead of add layer) in order to be edited in the pixel persona (makes sense)..but thought that might be helpful for some others with the same issue.

    Hey Ronnie. I think I've figured out what's going on in the example I pic I tweeted you. What that artist has done is use an EFFECT brush, the #4 in AD, applied the starkest of whites from colors, amped up the glow effects, and applied just a tiny bit of blur. It's an impressive optical illusion, much like your tutorial on shading with gradients.

    Good Morning,
    I continue to work with your tutorials with much interest. Thanks very much. At one point in this video you changed document size by clicking on a button just under the top menu bar. How did you get that button there? I've looked everywhere I could think of but haven't found out how to edit that space.
    Thanks, Paul, Ocala, FL

    you rock. thanks for this tutorial. I just purchased affinity today and was stumped by a few things only because they use different terms. For example I was looking for a way to import brushes or style palettes and the word "category" didnt mean anything to me. so it didnt click until I saw your video.
    now I just need to figure out how to save my brushes and styles from my vast fireworks collection and import or translate to affinity.

    • @Mixmediasalad
      @Mixmediasalad  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +katherine bjork You are welcome Katherine. If your brushes are .abr format then that easy just go to the brush palette option drop down and click import brushes. I think you will love this app the more you use it. Thanks for watching and thanks for your support!

    Mixmediasalad I'm using the trial version. Any idea why I don't see Colour range to Refine edges from the select menu. I just want to remove a background so wanted to use Select>Select Sampled Colour at you showed at 2:10.
    This is just as frustrating as photoshop. Appreciate any help.

    • @Mixmediasalad
      @Mixmediasalad  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      James Jehar I am so Sorry, James I missed your comment til now. I sure you figured it out by now, but if you haven't the reason why you don't see these options is because you might be in the draw persona and you need to be in the Pixel persona to take advantage of the Pixel-based tools and commands. to change personas you need to click the second button icon called the pixel persona at the top left corner of the application window.

    at 4:35 seconds after you refine when the smoke is selected you say hit delete and it deletes the background , when i hit delete it deletes the smoke and leaves the background . what am i missing here ?

      Invert your selection then delete.

    Hey there, I tried to refine the selection in black and white mode by dragging the brush over, but when I finish and let go of the mouse it doesn't refine, it has the outline of the grey brush still visible. Any suggestions?

  • @MrKiebach
    @MrKiebach 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    thanks for the video... however when i select sampled color, it only selects the margins of my image (not the details of the outline of the smoke, regardless of changing tolerance).. what am i doing wrong. also apply then delete does nothing

    Hey ronnie,
    I don't know if i have a different version of affinity then you but i don't know how you even brought up this image and was able to start it. Sorry to be such a newb but i need some help.

    • @Mixmediasalad
      @Mixmediasalad  9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey MMS, I don't have this option, or can't see this option "Select Sample Colour" in my Affinity Designer.

    • @chutiagiri
      @chutiagiri 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Okay, So I figured out that I have to switch to the 'Pixel Persona' which you didn't mention in the video :P , I saw a different menu so I looked closely and figured you are in a different mode, however I still have it greyed out :(

    • @chutiagiri
      @chutiagiri 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Okay I found it. I have to rasterise the layer. Pff, answering my own questions here...Sorry I am just a beginner

  • @ericstrickland6015
    @ericstrickland6015 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    hey ron when you selected the part where you used select sample in my AD app is isn't selectable? why is that?? I'm in the pixel persona.

    • @Mixmediasalad
      @Mixmediasalad  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because the Image that you imported is wrapped in an image object wrapper so you will have to go to the layers panel select the image you are trying to select and right click it select rasterize. Once you rasterize your image object you be able to use the select sample color feature. Did that make sense?

  • @jamesbrewer4296
    @jamesbrewer4296 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Ronnie. I'm struggling to replicate what you're doing in the tutorial - I think the problem may lie in the set up of my image, but I'm not sure. When I hit 'Refine Edges', after following the initial 'Select Sampled Colour' and applying, the background of my image (in the overlay mode) is red, not black as yours is in the video (about 3mins in). When I then go to black and white preview, the colours are inverted when compared with the video. When I then hit delete after refining the edges, affinity seems to increase the tolerance of the edges, rather than delete the background. Any help would be much appreciated!

    • @Mixmediasalad
      @Mixmediasalad  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      James Brewer Hello James.Have you figured this out yet? Perhaps you need to inverse your selection before going into refine? Command+shift + i. Maybe your selecting the opposite of what you think should be happening.

      To import your .abr brush file you must be in the pixel personal. IT will not import in the draw personal which is the vector persona. Hope that helped. Thanks for watching :)

    your using shortcuts so i can't tell how you are doing certain things like having a transparent background when your done. and when i export I'm getting the wrong size and I'm getting a box around my brush. i followed your video exactly but like i said your using shortcuts so your instruction seems choppy like I'm missing something. i can't eliminate the black background from my image. i need another video where your not using so many shortcuts. thanks bro.
