    Erma’s voice and delivery just do something to me. Straight church but she could pull it back when she wanted to.
    Her version of Light My Fire is my favourite vocal of her’s with Don’t Wait Too Long (jazzy, big band and more restrained) and Hold on I’m Comin’ close 2nd and 3rd.

    Yess, big soprano, dunno if Dramatic cause her voice is very similar to Morgan James, who I personally consider to be a Spinto. Morgan seems to have a little higher tessitura probably technique and training related, but I think Erma could hold full mix Bb5 and maybe hit higher

      Carolyn out of the three has my favourite belt (and I also think probably the best belting technique as well). Unfortunately we have very little live material from either sisters. For Aretha, I adore her voice 1960-mid 1970s, not really a fan of her voice in the 80s when the smoking really affected her voice.

      @@odumosuolusegun2781 I agree. It's not so much a caprino, as her vibrato is very wide and almost wobbly. It sounds a bit like Beyonce's vibrato. The darkest and biggest voice out of the Franklins naturally. That being said, I do think Aretha was a bigger-sized soprano naturally but she modified her tone a lot. Carolyn seems to be singing fairly naturally to me in terms of tone.

I would love to see what your thought is on her since you seem to know a lot about the voice and she has a very interesting way of singing. I do personally think Beyonce started off as a soprano and showed a soprano voice right until her pregnancies. I am not the most familiar with her voice post-pregnancies but I do believe she became a mezzo after them most likely. Great singer although I’m not really fond of her tone or vibrato.

      More than likely a mezzo, especially if your comfort zone is your middle and your timbre is dark, as you age the voice changes considerably. I use to be able to belt up to B5 regularly and go up to the seventh octave despite the fact I was clearly a low mezzo. However over the last five years my voice has lowered considerably but as I ascend my voice gets lighter as soon as I get above C#5.

    • @KajiVocals
      @KajiVocals  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ladysasha90 Everyone is gonna be more comfortable in the middle than on the top though if we are talking abotu FULL VOICE. If we talk about mix, then sure. Mix and belt are two very different things.
      The term 'dark' is also rather relative I'd say. What is dark for a soprano (Rosa Ponselle in opera; Vickie Winans, Angela Winbush or Jean Carne in contemporary) can be not dark at all compared to genuine dark mezzos (Della Reese, Doris Akers, Melonie Daniels, Tina Turner etc). Doesn't really discredit what you said but still wanted to mention it as people throw the term 'dark voice' around when it can mean quite a lot of things. There's also a natural and manufactured darkness too.

      @@jadawoodard1068 My views are all based on the Estill, CVT and a few other singing systems And I do often consult with people in both the industry and also professional vocal pedagogues and teachers. All of my views on the vocal fäch and vocal categorisation were passed on to me from people who are employed in the classical field and also come from hundreds of hours of research and listening to the classical repertoire. I do not mind sharing the names of my sources (assuming they allow me to do so) but I would not do it publicly.
      I could do more detailed videos on analasis as you say, but why? I don’t want to do it. And I don’t need to.
      I am about as much discrediting his views as he is mine.

      Yes! Erma had the darkest voice out of the three naturally. Almost a mezzo timbre at times. Aretha had a rather bright instrument naturally but it darkened through all the smoking etc. I don't think she ever became a true mezzo though, just a damaged soprano. Carolyn had the highest and brightest voice, with the highest tessitura. Very effortless and quite full. She can mix up 2 semitones above Aretha and does it a few times in one song. Surprisingly Erma has the worst lower range out of the three. While it sure has tone, she often disappeared as 'high' as A3 and was going sharp below G#3. I would say all of them had high-set voices with different levels of colour to it.

      @@issakelly8071 Probably bad promotion tbh. Erma had a big hit with Piece of My Heart (that Janis Joplin covered) but was a bit of a ‘one hit wonder’ unfortunately. I’m not really sure how popular Carolyn got as I didn’t look into her charts but seeing how she had a few more albums than Erma, I’ll assume she probably was a bigger commercial success. I also think a part of them not getting more popular was Aretha’s success to an extent, and the fact that there were quite a lot of other, more popular singers singing in the same style in that period.
