- Siege of Gondolin -
Gondolin was founded by King Turgon in the First Age. It was originally named Ondolindë. According to The Silmarillion, the Vala Ulmo, the Lord of Waters, revealed the location of the Vale of Tumladen to Turgon in a dream. Under this divine guidance, Turgon travelled from his kingdom in Nevrast and found the vale. Within the Echoriath, the Encircling Mountains, lay a round level plain with sheer walls on all sides and a ravine and tunnel leading out to the southwest known as the Hidden Way. In the middle of the vale there was a steep hill which was called Amon Gwareth, the "Hill of Watch". There Turgon decided to found a city, designed after the city of Tirion in Valinor that the Noldor had left.
Turgon and his people built Gondolin in secret. After it was completed, he took with him to dwell in the hidden city his entire people in Nevrast - almost a third of the Noldor of Fingolfin's House - as well as nearly three quarters of the northern Sindar.
The city was a closely guarded secret..nobody who entered , would be entrusted to leave .The defences were further improved by the eagles nesting in the mountains which kept Morgoth's scouts away and the main entrance was in a hidden pass.
The Hidden Pass was protected by seven gates, all constantly guarded; the first of wood, then stone, bronze, iron, silver, gold, and steel. The seven gates of Minas Tirith echoed this notion of a layered defense on a hill.
Tuor one of the edain, had been spent his childhood raised be elves but was soon captured and became a thrall of the easterlings.Later he escaped and became a outlaw but was approached by Ulmo[Valar of the Sea] and given mighty gifts and told to seek out Gondolin and warn them that there doom was upon them .A elven traitor betrayed the location of the city and morgoth withdrew his scouts ...and the elves let down their guard thinking morgoth had given up.
It was as the Gondolindrim were celebrating the festival of Tarnin Austa that Morgoth assaulted their city. As the sun went down that day and all the people were out to witness the ending of the day, a red glow grew in the north dyeing the snow on the mountains as blood. Riders fled over the plain bringing the tidings, Morgoth was upon them.
The enemy contained dragons [represented by artillery in this scenario], balrogs , wargs and many orcs....Turgon believed that the defenders could hold out but he still sent his people to safety using a secret escape route where they exited the mountains , these peoples where escorted to safety by the help of the eagles and a elf named legolas with some of his woodland folk.
Will morgoth complete the destruction of one of the great elven cities or will they resist the hordes of darkness...
errdata : The elven king should be Turgon and the other general should have been Ecthelion but the names are not allowed for in the script
Advice : Elfes - your stamina is excellent ..you can run and fight without suffering fatigue..find some good choke points and use your artillery well
Mordor - Your orcs&goblins tire easily but you have plenty of artillery and numbers on your side.With the Balrogs and Trolls you have some excellent hard hitting units

Yes. The Hidden City was too small in this scenario, though, (but that I can understand--it would be really difficult to get it to scale) and it's not an archive. He doesn't seem that well versed in Tolkien mythology, though.
Gondolin was 3x greater than Minas Tirith. lol
Legolas helped them, but it wasn´t THE Legolas, but another, because Lagolas wasn´t even born yet at this point.

+paladinbob 123 It was Glorfindel, not Legolas. Glorfindel, the same elf who served under Elrond. Glorfindel died helping the refugees escape (by dueling a balrog to death) and was later revived by the Valar.
glorfindel of course was there but there was a legolas elf that helped to lead the refugees to safety but it was not the prince of mirkwood :D

I don't mean to piss on you for your incorrect info but1) Turgon did not believe his city could defend itself from the forces of Morgoth why would he, sure he knew he could hold out for a time but he couldn't defend from thousands of orcs, hundreds of dragons, dozens of balrogs, etcetera.
2) Legolas was not alive during the Siege of Gondolin, the elf you are talking about was Glorifindel who was granted a second life later on in the third age, like how Gandalf was given a second life
Nope Legolas is the correct name, however it wasn't THE Legolas
Legolas of Gondolin was a person born much before Legolas of Mirkwood
When the Elves realized that the secret of Gondolin was betrayed, and that Morgoth was now about to assail them, Turgon took counsel with his lords. Tuor was in favor of sallying forth and breaking through the enemy ranks to escape with as many folk of Gondolin that could be saved. He believed the city would be lost no matter how valiant a defense they could muster. Maeglin, on the other hand, was in favor of defending the city, saying thar the city was indomitable and its riches too valuable to be lost. In the end, Turgon favored Maeglin's counsel.

Malcom Sheppard Legolas of Gondolin was a scout. While he was still significant, he wasn't that much of a figure compared to Glorfindel, so there is simply very little chance of confusing both characters.
Alsace Thriene Ok but I don't think this Legolas is the elf were talking about though I believe based off of the chapters in the book that Ecthelion may be the elf Apollo talked about. Glorifindel did play a part but in the retreat and defeat of a balrog.
Awesome fight! Really epic. Seeing that hyper-elite elven army I thought nothing could bring them down.
The fall of gondolin was the culmination of the defeat of the noldor Elves, but it also set in motion the series of events that lead to the downfall of Melkor.
I wish paladin included Glorofindel in the battle though. In a smiths of Eriagon unit or something.
I'd imagine he'd be in an Eldarinwë Swordsmen unit, as they wear golden armor, and Glorfindel is the Lord of the House of the GOLDEN Flower.
It was also published in The Silmarillion.

Something I noticed of this battle in particular:
At the end, you had an orc captain from Mordor and that one is called Gothmog! Ironically enough, Morgoth did have a Balrog captain called Gothmog and that one did get killed in the siege of Gondolin!
Too bad you can't add dragons in this game, cos if you could....Oh, man!

The city in the book is described as being Huge with layers of defence such a one entrance to the mountain pass, which is hidden and blocked by 7 gates

Melkor tortured some noldor in the very early days to creat the orcs. Ps sorry for any mistakes i'n not a native speaker

Yes, Maeglin was the traitor. He was captured by Orcs on one of his mining trips, and was taken to Morgoth. Morgoth offered him the rule of Gondolin and Idril as wife if he would tell where Gondolin lay. Maeglin accepted the offer and betrayed Gondolin, because he hated Tuor so much. Tuor was married to Idril.
Maeglin wanted to marry Idril, but they are actually related. Idril is the daughter of Turgon King of Gondolin, and Maeglin was the son of the Aredhel, Turgon's sister. So yeah, a union between Maeglin and Idril would have constituted incest. Also, Idril didn't love Maeglin.

The Elves are so tough because the units have incredibly high morale. Put 5 xp chevrons on them and they will fight to the last man. This will tie down attacking units for a long time allowing defending archers to shoot into blobbed up attackers inflicting a ton of damage.

from my age..i was excited when the animated version came out , but unfortunately nothing more was done. When peter Jackson moved to do the movies I was despondent, as I was sure the American money would muck things up , but was exultant when they gave them the money to do 3 movies , especially after they I saw the first one, as peter Jackson seemed to have the soul of a d&d player which both captured the heart and soul of the genre and the humour/fun :D [which completed the movies in my mind :D]
Well said. The trilogy is one of the best ever made. I wonder what if they had enough material to make 9 movies like the Star Wars. I'm not sure if the studios would let Peter Jackson be in charge of all of them which could result the same as the SW newer chapters. We'll probably get a sample of that in the Tolkien series that are about to be shot. Anyway, I watch the Lord of the Rings movies every few years and they age like the finest wine.
BTW, I am most grateful for the scenarios you make, both for Third Age and historical. The Weather Top was excellent:). They extend the game by a great length. If you are also involved in the development of the mod - super high five to you, man, and to the other guys working on the project. That team should definitely be advising Creative Assembly on how to approach the game:)

Hey Apollo! Im really enjoying ur videos and I have a little tipp for u. Just call the elvish Archers and swordsman Eldar.... e.g. Eldar Archers, Eldar Swordsman. Its a little abbreviation that i heared often in other videos :)

And there are a lot of things that aren't accurat (Turgon wasn't he one to make the hidden passage out of Gondolin, it was his daughter Idril (not sure about the name, the Elves could not have Smiths of Eregion in their army, because Eregion didn't exist) but these are details. Legolas was born in the Second Age, not First... The person he is talking about is Glorfindel
Interestingly though, Glorfindel DID return to Middle-Earth from Aman part way through the Second Age. And in the early drafts of Fellowship of the Ring, Glorfindel was to be the elf that joined the Fellowship, not Legolas.

I accidentally hit start battle without deploying my troops and was forced to rush into position in the beginning and didn't have time to form my line outside the wall how I wanted. I could have easily got more than 3500 kills for you and probably won. I used a lot of micro to climb back but it wasn't enough. Sorry Ben, this is still my favourite youtube comment though, it made me happy!

Legolas never saw Belerian and it's cities, it was Glorfindel who perished fighting off a Balrog while the people of Gondolin fled the city.He was later reincarnated in the caverns of Mandos and decided to return to Middle Earth in the second age, he's the one who save Frodo by bringing him to Foncombe in the books.
There's alot more to this guy but I'm sur you can find alot of interesting things over the net.

There is mention of a Legolas Greenleaf in The Lost Tales, but the character was probably done away with by Tolkien since he doesn't appear in the published Silmarillion.
There's a lack of elven archers i thought Gondolin had stocked up on arrows. (if i remember correctly they mention that the whole population could stand on the walls firing for seven years before running out of arrows) I demand more arrows!

'Looks exactly like it is in the books'. My dear Apollo, the glorious city of Gondolin does not look like this. This is only the interpretation of the city within the limits of this game. The beauty of Gondolin is beyond our mortal comprehension, it is said that it's beauty rivaled that of Tirion upon Túna and of Valimar in the West. The artist, Ted Nasmith, painted, by my opinion, one of the most beautiful interpretations of Gondolin.
In the Old books There were substantially more balrogs, but less powerful obviously as 15 are recorded to have died (that are described). In the new lore it is said that only 7 have ever existed
I really hope there will be more first age or even second age battles for this mode, that would be so awesome.

Also, it was not an Elven Traitor: After Hùrin was captured by Melkor and tortured for many years, Melkor released him and left a mark on him to follow, knowing that Hùrin would head to Gondolin. When Hùrin arrived at Gondolin, he entered the city, (Insert several pages of Silmarillion here) Melkor sent his army, the city fell, Glorfindel did his usual Badass stuff, died in a pile of orcs and was flown to Valinor.
+Aaron Baum I do believe that hurin sorta gave melkor a rough location of the city ..but I still think he couldn'nt find it until the elfven traitor revealed the way... :P

But in the end, Maeglin was the one to reveal the exact location. Glorfindel didn't die in a pile of orcs, he died because he killed a Balrog and they both fell of a cliff or something. He didn't flow to Valinor either I think.
You're thinking of Ecthellion. He and Gothmog drowned in the fountain of kings after falling off the wall during a 1 V 1 fight. He stood between Gothmog and a wounded Tour, his shield arm already broken. After Gothmog crippled his other arm, Ecthellion jumped up, plunging the ceremonial spike on his helmet into Gothmog's chest. They then both tumbled off the wall and drowned in the Fountain of Lords.

The Balrogs (outside of Gothmog) where more like powerful shock troops at the time. Tolkien didn’t write them the same back then as they where in the trilogy

Defenders should've put archers on the bridge and pikes underneath as well as swordsmen to defend both entrances of the bridge to guard the archers.

Just, the traitor is a man, called Hùrin, a friend of the elven king, who was cursed by Melkor to be his spy (without him knowing it). It was not Legolas who accompanied the civilians but it was Glorfindel ;) .
Hurin gave Melkor the rough area, but it was Maeglin who betrayed the location.
Legolas of Gondolin was another elf altogether
Oops, ok. I read the Silmarillion about 3 years ago and only once, I hesitate too read it again !
the only thing about this mod that i don't like is that you just... cannot do justice to the battles of the first or even the second age. the third age's warriors are chiorboys next to the high elven lords and balrogs and dragons and even maiar and valar that fought back then. There was melkor, an evil god to whom even sauron was just a servant, and there were elves so powerful that they were capable of holding their own against him in single combat! i find it funny that the ram used to break minas tirith's gate is called Grond, after the hammer of melkor, and that the crippled orc general is called gothmog, after the greatest balrog ever... it amuses me to see these things scaled down so much.

I keep coming back to watch this battle. Absolutely on of the best. The elven players in my opinion did awesome. They get attacked by over
7000 Orcs/Goblins and almost win. If the defenders had at least 100 more elven spears or swordsman they would have won. ahhh.. now to watch a battle where the orcs get slaughtered.

I think that siege of Gondolin was also mentioned in the book "The Sons of Thurin". (I hope its called so because I translated it from german to english but sometimes the books have different names in other languages)

Just to point out your very important false information regarding the passageway out of the city. The secret passageway was not of the kings creation at all. Even when the guy who made it asked for permission he was refused out of the fear that it would compromise the security of the city because ypu made an additional entrance that the forces of evil could use to enter the city. And Turgon also believed his defences to be impenetrable if they even were to be discovered which he believed to be even less likely. But the guy made the secret passageway anyhow. By the way I haven't seen anyone in the comments here mentioning that the swords Gandalf and Thorin took from the troll-lair, Glamdring and Orcrist were used in this battle. And the fear of these weapons that the orcs carry in their minds comes from the fact that these weapons were used in the last stand of Turgon and the last (and most elite) of his men in the central tower of Gondolin.
