  • In this video, I'm demonstration the basic usage of A Better Finder Rename to rename files on the Apple Macintosh computer.
I show you drag in file and folders from the Finder into the Preview List, then work your way through the renaming parameters to dial in the new file names that you want to achieve.
In the second part of the video, I demonstrate how to use the process section to limit renames to files or folder and how to rename folder hierarchies using the "subfolders and their contents" checkbox.
A Better Finder Rename is the most popular, comprehensive & user friendly batch file renaming app for macOS.

A brilliant program. I've been using it for years, especially with phone and DSLR camera images. There are so many options that almost every scenario is covered. I could not live without ABFR.

First time trying this program. Am trying to change a character from / to :. I get "0 out of 177 items need renaming" and when I perform the rename, I get the dialogue: "No file names were changed". Do I need to register to rename?

You walked right into one of the weirdest edge cases of Mac file naming 😎. As you know macOS is a Unix dialect which means that the forward slash is the path separator, so theoretically you can’t use it in any file names.. but classic MacOS used the : character as path separator and the forward slash was legal and much used in file names. So when Apple migrated to Unix, they used a trick: at the user interface level the forward slash is still legal, but in the actual file name it is replaced with :. So hello/world on the file system is stored as hello:world. ABFR knows this and makes sure to translate the names correctly between their “user representation” and “file system representation”.. so replacing / with : does nothing.. This is indeed confusing, so to summarize: the : is not a legal character in the user visible file names on macOS.. but if you look at the names of your files in the Unix console your forward slashes are already :s.

Great app, use it a lot for renaming, especially for tv shows. With this it is really easy to rename episodes and combine multiple sequence counters, to have something like this: One Piece S02 E0013 - 00033.mkv. Really easy to integrate a counting for season with the overall counting of the show, so that you don't lose track of the overall count.
