    It's deeply saddening to see how badly underestimated the tsunami was.

    • @mrmakhno3030
      @mrmakhno3030 ปีที่แล้ว +50

      Japan already built a tsunami wall which was 6 meters high at that time. And based on the prediction of Japanese early warning system the maximum height of tsunami at that time is 6 meter. In reality the maximum height of the tsunami is 30 meter. Many people didn't even try to evacuate.

    • @sideeggunnecessary
      @sideeggunnecessary 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      It wasn't underestimated. Japan is, by FAR, the most prepared for tsunami country out of any country in the world. It was just THAT big.

    • @sideeggunnecessary

      On the other hand a shoreline nuclear reactor is a really really stupid idea.

    • @msruag
      @msruag 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@sideeggunnecessary a lot of nuclear reactors are purposefully put near the shoreline so that water (which can easily absorb radiation and cool down steam rods) is readily available and there isn't a delay should there be an accident like overheating the steam rods or a steam rod breaking because if there isn't a ready supply of water it would take long to get all that water to the plant and it could cause an even worse disaster. honestly goes to show that nuclear power just isn't safe as a sustainable source of energy

      i'm Japanese.
      I really think it was underestimated at the time.
      The Japanese people finally learned after that earthquake and tsunami.
      Just a few days ago, there was a Japanese Earthquake level 7(level 1: weak to level 7: devastation) earthquake and a 4.2 meter tsunami,
      Compared to that time, the Japanese people's awareness of the dangers is incomparably different.

  • @user-gl5vk8li2y
    @user-gl5vk8li2y ปีที่แล้ว +24

    At first, earthquake early warnings cannot correction. Earthquake early warning issued at 5 prefectures. Earthquake early warning issues if each place's expected intensity is V/4 or more higher. However,for example,Ibaraki prefecture was 6+/IX, but ibaraki prefecture was not issued earthquake early warning. At result, the number of dead increased in Ibaraki prefecture. So JMA modified be able to earthquake early warnings can correction and change earthquake early warning's area later.
    At 2022/3/16Fukushima earthquake (M7.3,depth57km),earthquake early warning's area changed for 4 times. If magnitude is grater then 7.0,fault moving will not finish in short time. So earthquake early warnings MUST change it's area.

    • @siyuyangzhang6995
      @siyuyangzhang6995 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes, I am agree, this is also the same case for the 2008 Sichuan Earthquake (M 7.9~8.0). If the earthquake has magnitude greater than M 7.0, like those M 8-ish, M 9-ish, the fault moving will not finish in a short time; so at first the prediction magnitude is lower and the area is smaller, then later the prediction magnitude is increases and the area is expanding; therefore, earthquake early warnings MUST change it's magnitude and affected area.

      Most likely, this could have been even worse, as mt fuji could have erupted due to the seismic activity. That would have, combined with the earthquake, made a dust cloud cover Tokyo, delaying critical emergency services by possibly hours at most.
      “Live from Tokyo before the feed was interrupted by the ash cloud you can see alongside the shaking, the ash cloud, rolling down Mount Fuji right into the heart of Tokyo.”
      “The ash cloud covered the windows with dust, and combined with the shaking, it just made it worse.”
      “The ash cloud caused the Toyosu Natural Gas Plant, built, operated and maintained by TEPCO, to explode before starting fires due to the increased friction from the dust. TEPCO denies any responsibility of negligence due to both Fukushima and Toyosu Disasters, stating the magnitude 9.1 earthquake, and tsunami, alongside the eruption resulting from the shaking, was unpredictable, and that it would have taken a long time to fix the issues. TEPCO is still facing legal charges from victims of the two disasters.”

      For this 2011 Tohoku, Japan Earthquake (M 9.0~9.1), actually this earthquake has maximum intensity of MMI IX, or MMI X at most for rough estimate, and Shindo 7 based on JMA; it is impossible to be MMI XI-XII, the shaking and the damages caused by the shaking does not like that. Also, since this earthquake has very large magnitude, the shaking time and the high-itensity areas affected is very large, this is how a M 9-ish earthquake to be different from a M 7-ish or M 8-ish earthquake.

      I think Japan categorizes major Tsunami as over 3 meters while I use 5 meters as my bench mark for all my other videos so I had to adjust it a bit for the sake of consistency.

    Why are after tsunami late liquefaction? i knew 1923 kanto earthquake had liquefaction before tsunami

    • @Knotreally
      @Knotreally 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Liquefaction is caused by the earthquake, not the tsunami. So, if you have a tsunami, then aftershocks, there can be liquefaction after tsunami.
