S1 - Ep 230 - Springbok - The Largest Town in the Namaqualand of the Northern Cape!

  • The road from Komaggas to Springbok might have been a tarred road, but it was stunning all the same. The Spektakel Pass was made so much more of a spectacle because of the story behind its name. When we arrived in the bustling Northern Cape town of Springbok, we could immediately see why it is the largest town in Namaqualand. We knew straightaway that we would not be able to cover even a small percentage of the town with the limited time to our disposal, so we just took a drive through and saw what we could. Then it was off to our accommodation about 10km outside of Springbok, where we had a fantastic time with a view to die for. What a beautiful place to recharge. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #springbok #namaqualand #northerncape #komaggas #spektakelpass

Curtis and Sonia, a BIG thank you. Springbok is my late mother's home town and the beautiful stone church with the spire, where she and my father were married. My soul feels slightly happier... so many treasured memories. FANTASTIC!

Greetings! No wonder you love the Namaqualand region so much! 🤗 We so wish we were able to show you more, but what we did manage to see of Springbok, was amazing and the town is clearly flourishing, which is fantastic. We're happy that you were reminded of special people and times. 💒 Thank you for coming along to this town, which you clearly know very well. We hope the other places we got to visit on our trip will cheer you up even more. 😊🚗

Nice place. This area does look like the southwest USA. Springbok is nice. The conifers are the same as we have around our house. Happy travels.

You know, the area does resemble some of the Australia we've seen on TV and such, so that makes sense. We're keen to explore your part of the world one day too. We just love the bareness and barrenness of arid areas like these. We appreciate you tagging along through Namaqualand with us. 🚗🇿🇦

WOW, absolutely stunning, you've also managed to showcase Springbok, providing your viewers a fairly thorough overview...if Springbok is a "litmus test sample"for the future of that region and SA, then its encouraging. Your accommodation was stunning, however the surrounding vistas, especially in the early morning with the sun making an appearance over those mountains...daar is nie woorde nie...I love it 😀...Thank-you!!

Springbok, like the antelope it got its name from, was wild! In the best way possible. 🤩 It is clearly an economic hub and, in the very short time we were there, we saw so many facets of the community that we were really impressed by. I, like you, was encouraged by what we saw in the town and we hope more places can follow suit. By all indications, it's a bustling and prosperous place and I agree that, with a town like this the hub of Namaqualand, it has to mean good things for the region at large. The farm we stayed at was breathtaking and I spent every waking moment just staring out at those landscapes, just incredible! The complete barrenness has this inexplicable attraction and we found it hard to leave. 🌄 We appreciate you exploring the Namaqualand region with us. It must surely remind you of some of the places in the Tankwa and other areas of the Karoo where you've travelled so often before. We were reminded of the Karoo quite often on this trip ourselves, both in terms of landscapes and absolute silence. If one just takes the time to stop and listen. 😊🚗

The sunrise was stunning, I loved it! I'm not that proficient in catching stars on my camera, although I've tried a few times. We still enjoyed them with the naked eye though and I echo your sentiment. The night sky blew our minds too! 🌌🤩

These are very old places, with histories that goes back thousands of years, way back till the time humans, became human beings. Namaqualand is a natural and world treasure. It should always be protected, for future generation. This is a very magical, and precious place.

Thank you for the tour of Sprinbok. Bigger than your usual little towns, but still interesting. Love the surroundings and the Quiver trees, one of my favourites. And for the big compliment, we're honoured to be on your Top 5 list. 😊 You and I are on the same page about the quiver trees, I could have my very own forest and never grow tired of them, they're just magnificent! 🌴 Our accommodation was gorgeous and the surrounding landscape next level. Definitely worth visiting, it's a stunning place. I'm always so happy to hear when you enjoy the drone footage. The wind so seldom allowed it on this trip, so I was excited to fly whenever I could. The Spektakelpas is truly spectacular! I put on my spectacles to see it better. Hope I didnt make a spectacle of myself. Springbok is a respectable town too, my best friend taught at the Primary school for years. In retrospect the town was a lot smaller back then. Thank you for a very interesting and insightful inspection of this town as i have come to expect from you guys by now. The churches are beautiful with the stone work and art. Your cabin is awesome, I do love a rietdak. And so peaceful. I would love a holiday there, are there walks up the koppie? It is wonderful retreat, for some moments of introspection

@Anna Witter 🤣 Thank you for the chuckle, very clever. And, yes, you did make a spectacle of yourself! And we love it! 🤓🗻 We passed through Springbok many moons ago, but did not expect the size town that we encountered this time around, it is huge! The stonework is what attracts us to the churches nowadays, as much as the architecture. The craftsmanship was next level back in the day, we just don't see that anymore. 💒 I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the drive through the town, some pretty houses there. We drove past the Primary School, I wonder if it's the same one your best friend taught at. They happened to have their Prizegiving at the time we drove past. 😍 Our accommodation was awesome! I'm sure you'll be able to take long walks there, the farm is 300ha in size. You'll have a collection of four-legged ones in tow, they just love the guests! 🐶🐶 Thanks, as always, for watching, we so appreciate that.

Well being a "Namakwalander" I so much appreciate the "brownness" of our region being an arid / semi desert area. This is what makes it so beautiful and interesting as you get succulents in this region that you will find no where else in the world. So in short - this is not an area to expect green other than what people have in their gardens. 🇿🇦🇿🇦

I love guys videos. Springbok, is one of those places, that refuse to die, like its people. Namaqualand is a blue zone. I love how you guys are showing us a world and life outside of the "city". Places like Springbok Steinkopf, Nababeep, etc. give people a lifestyle, so extreme, outside of the Cape Town, Johannesburg or Durban. These places give us peace, and peace of mind. It is an extreme region, but it also teaches people what it really means to be a human being. These are amazing places. Ek gaan hier aftree, en verewig lewe, in rus en vrede.

More often than not, they're located inside of shopping centres though, so that's most likely the reason why we and you didn't spot one! We're so glad you enjoy our videos and we hope they help brighten up any dreary day in your part of the world. The editing of this trip's videos is rather intense because of the mic giving us hassles early on already and me only realising it on the very last day. 🤷🏼‍♂️ So the music covers up most of the scratchiness from the mic. The farm at the bottom of Spektakelpas is called Skaaprivier,it used to be our family farm. I spent many holidays there. My brother still lives there, and some of my other family as well. The story about how the pass got its name,is the same story I was told by my parents,it was given by Simon van der Stell. Well it looked like my comment did not happen...I probably pressed Enter and not Comment..lol. lets try again..Well now I know why you went south when you left Kleinzee...and there I thought it was because you heard about that terrible gravel road north of Kleinzee.. Yes Springbok is a lovely town and normally full of visitors/travelers. Here you stay over or just fill your tummy at the restaurants when you come from the south on the N7 on your way north to the border with Namibia, or west to the Richtersveld, or east to Upington and beyond. I think I have passed through Springbok probably more than 35 times since 2000. Camped once opposite the N7 in the middle of winter...big mistake...it gets very cold here in winter. Very nice town with plenty of nice places to stay, thanx for showing us around. I was just thinking now, you started your day in Hondeklipbaai, then to Koiingnaas, then Kleinzee, then Kommagas and you still get to Springbok with the sun shining....I can understand that both of you are really bushed after a day like this. Well done! And then of course you cut the video just before you turn right...or was it left.?.. 🙂🙂

😁 Don't you worry, we heard plenty about the terrible road the other way out of Kleinzee. 😨 Springbok is actually a fantastic place and deserves to be so much more than just a quick stop on one's travels for a bite to eat or to stay over. We would for sure like to spend a few days there in the future and just take in the vibe and the environment. We were blown away by the size of the town and weren't expecting that at all. 😳 35 times since 2000!! That's a fair bit of travelling, no wonder you know the area like the back of your hand! 🤩 I can only imagine it must get freezing here in winter though and sweltering hot in summer. We always joke and say we work hard so we can travel hard and we love it. It can be very tiring though, but it's a satisfied kind of tired if you know what I mean. 😊 We're literally like two tourists in our own country now. This was a very long day and we were grateful that the sun was still high when we got to our accommodation. We shall see you in the next place. 😎🚗

Loved everything on this journey - could hear Sonia saying she’d “need to 😴💤with one 👁️ open” if you lived in one of houses you were viewing in Springbok - in the cul de sac nestled at the base of those heavily bouldered hills 😄
Your overnight accommodation was lovely and the drone footage, wonderful! That early morning sunrise , with the birds stirring, was priceless. Your sleepy neighbours all missed out on it - curtains drawn tightly 😉
    Your dinner looked yummy, too!

    • @DustBugsTravel

Yup, those 'little rockfalls, Sonia refers to, would have me quite worried. 😨 Then again, they've been there for a gazillion years, so there is probably a minute chance of that happening, I guess. Some of those properties up against those rocky hills were stunning though and we're glad we took the drive. I appreciate you saying that you enjoyed the drone footage, I had a rare windless opportunity to fly here and just had to jump at the chance to capture that astonishing arid landscape from above. Our sleepy neighbours missed out for sure. We were a little sleepy and groggy ourselves, but just knew that this morning would be spectacular, so we had to haul ourselves out of bed. 😵 Oh, and dinner was divine! 🍽️ Thanks for visiting Springbok with us! 😍🚗

Springbok has a special significance to me
    BACKGROUND
I'm single, always have been. The reason? Not important in this tale but it's roots lie in the days of my childhood.
So, back around 1994, I fostered a blond blue eyed lad of 14, out of the disastrous quagmire that goes for child welfare - - Twice broken from previous placements, desperate and with little to no future, we begun making a go of it.
This is a tale of one of our adventures- - - Our springbok adventure.
    THE TALE
When the lad was around 15 or so, I decided to take him to go ans "see some of the country" & so we arrived at the Springbok caravan park.
Now there is a large hill just behind the park. The lad, eyeing the hill announced:-
I want to go to the top.
Why, on earth do you want to go up there?
To see what I can see from up there.
OK, so you have a goal, and a reason, that's good enough, I'll come with you.
So, after a bit of a climb, we got to a plateau, and took a bit of a rest.
Then we tackled second climb, which was quite a bit steeper than the first, and came to a second plateau, and took another well earned rest.
Again we climbed, which was a heck of a lot steeper than even the second climb, and I braced him when he slipped, and we helped each other over some boulders, and eventually we summated the hill, and the view was simply spectacular.
So we again rested - - - I admit I was more than a bit clappered.
Rested, I said WELL DONE LAD ! YOU DID IT CONGRATULATIONS !
    pause
You do realize, climbing this hill is just like life - - -
    Pause
    How's that? he asked.
Well, think about it. You had a reason, and you set a goal, and with a he'll of a lot of effort, you got over all the things in your way, including being disappointed when twice you thought you where at the top but yet you pushed on through all of that, and finally you got to the top and saw the view that you wanted to see.
And just remember, like when you slipped and nearly fell, I was there to help you.
We sat for a while, sipping our cokes...
    Then he said :
    And I helped you too
I said nothing. Nothing needed saying -- -
The emotion, tearing right behind my eyes.
    POST SCRIPT
Bought him a house 10 odd year back and he has 2 wonderful kids now 12 & 11 (who I spoil rotten - - As oupa it's my job) and a wonderful wife and mother, has a good solid job, & we all live on the same property.
    Still helping one another....
Indeed Springbok lies close to my heart ❤️ 💙
Pardon the long post.... I really did try my best to keep it short
    Warren

An interesting fact about Spektakel pass.I don't know if it is really true, but it can be,because if you look at it from the bottom, you can see it looks like a straight line from the left side bottom of the mountain to the top on the right side.. Apparently when they planned the new pass(which was built in the 70's),the guy who had to plan it,took a panorama photo of the mountain, then put a ruler from the bottom at an angle to the top,and drew a line, and then told the person who was in charge of building it,"There you are, built it like this"

    • @DustBugsTravel
      @DustBugsTravel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

That sounds just too easy! ⛰️🤣 I'm sure it looks like a straight line from afar, but surely there must be more to building a pass than just drawing a line on a piece of paper. Not that I've ever built a pass, but there are quite a few twists and turns on that pass too! Interesting anecdote though! 😁🚗

Thank you, we're glad to hear that you're enjoying our videos. 😊 Your comment is on our video of Springbok, which is a large town in the Namaqualand region of South Africa. This particular town was started around copper mining operations in the area and so every town has its own individual history. Others were started as mission stations or churches and developed from there. Yet others started out as trading posts and became bigger. Fascinating stuff indeed! 👌🏻🇿🇦 Springbok has flourished and has become the economic hub of the region and many people from neighbouring towns and regions visit the town and further stimulate the local economy.

I'm from Springbok! Glad to see you drove past two of my favourite houses - 13:53 and 15:52. You summed up the town very well, you missed almost nothing.
If you're interested, the only thing you can look for (if there is a) next time is the Synagogue Museum, which would have been closed at the time of day you arrived in town anyway. Next to it is the first Dutch Reformed Church, which became too small by the 1920s so the "Klipkerk" was built, and when that became too small in the 1970s the modern church you saw last was built.
The old Anglican Church in this video was also the site of the wedding of a great-great-aunt of mine in 1881 - we drive past it each day but only found this out recently! Really gives you new perspective on the places around you when you know where your forefathers fit in.
This video was great - thank you!

😁 Sonia has a wide smile about the meaning of 'spektakel' in Afrikaans, so I get you. I think Simon van der Stel may have used the word in Dutch which would mean 'kijkspel', 'schouwspel' or 'vertoning' according to dictzone.com. That would make perfect sense to then translate to the view when he came over the mountains. It may very well be anecdotal, but such a beautiful story, that the two of us chose to believe it! 🤩⛰️ Your friend is a lucky guy to call Springbok home.
