Jaques Cousteu (1910-1997)was a naval officer, ocean explorer who helped coinvent the SCUBA system and filmed so many underwater oceanographies. That's who "can't even get that low"
Wu Tang changed the whole game and threw hip hop on its head. Lyrics, beats and just over all presence. There will NEVER be anything like them. Banger Stax! Helluva way to wake up! Coffee, my bro and a banger song.
The incredible thing about this track - Masta Killa who did the final verse was a last minute addition to the Wu and that verse was his FIRST EVER attempt at rapping. He was a good friend of GZA and hung out with the crew but was too shy to MC, but when RZA was looking for a final verse for this track Masta Killa took his shot and history was made! This is Masta Killa’ only appearance on this first album, but he gets a lot more verses on future Wu albums. The Wu was so DEEP the 9th spot on the roster was GZA’s chess buddy who wasn’t an MC and he’s still 🔥 Must listen solo tracks: BROOKLYN ZOO (ODB) DAYTONA 500 (Ghostface) 4TH CHAMBER (GZA) GUILLOTINE (Raekwon)
The final spot for this song came down to Masta Killa and Killah Priest( Sunz of Man ). They battled and then wrote lyrics for this song. I believe Killah Priest( Sunz of Man ) fell asleep and woke up to hearing Masta Killa's verse on the song.
RZA's love for classic martial arts movies is genuine. He even traveled to China, studied in a Shaolin Temple, and produced his own martial arts movie "The Man With The Iron Fists".
This is my FAVORITE Wu Tang song. I remember seeing the video late at night on BET. It changed my life. I still listen to it weekly. The ODB verse is straight FIRE. This whole album is diamond level brilliance. Still my all time favorite.
The 90s were filled with bars... from the mainstream to the deep underground,,that was the style back then...you had to be unique and couldn't copy anyone else otherwise you would be considered "wack". Now you know why us older heads aren't feeling today's music ,,,all sounds the same with elementary rhymes.. 😢
Imagine hearing this live?!? i had the honor of seeing them at Rock the Bells in 04. One of ODBs few last appearances. i was so blitzed off whatever i was puffing and guzzling. my brother showed up eventually and we lost our minds as they performed these tracks live. wu tang forever
There are 3 music videos that I still remember the night they dropped. Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and “Remember The Time” Wu-Tang- “Mystery of Chessboxin” on video music box (NYC video show)
From Nas to Jay Z all below and around, they know Wu Tang are the standard bearers of lyricism and quality(underground to the maintream per say), yet immensely popular because of the quality. They are like the congress/senators/presidents of hiphop. They are the bar setters. then and til this day. Any real spitters out there respect the Wu.
Yeah, a lot of their songs (and their names: Ol' Dirty Bastard, Method Man, Masta Killer, Ghostface Killer,) reference 70s/80s Kung-fu movies and characters because they (like me) grew up as huge fans of the genre, from the samples to their production. Even their group name references the classic martial arts style of Wu-Tang.
It’s amazing to see horses this younger generation reacts to Wu Tang because you guys are just as surprised as we were when we first heard them. The only thing is we got to experience them real time. They are truly a special group in the world of Hip Hop
I’m loving your journey through a lot of classic hip hop. Like someone else said, they really changed the game when the Wu came in the scene. No one had seen a group of so many emcees who could bring it like that.

I saw these guys live with Rage Against The Machine in like 1996 or 97, (can't remember?) at Tinley Park Amphitheater near Chicago. I yelled so much I lost my voice! It was definitely one of the best concerts ever! Wu Tang Clan came on the scene with that intelligent, kind of radical type of style. And each of the guys in the group had their own individual style, and they flowed together well. I'm glad you're digging them. I would like to recommend some Outkast, maybe "Bombs Over Baghdad" (explicit) or "So Fresh, So Clean", or anything else by them is good. Thanks man!
Great song. ODB's verse is fire. Unique flow. He's always been my favourite. His debut solo album has some hits you should check out. "Shimmy Shimmy Ya", "Baby C'Mon" and "Brooklyn Zoo" area. great trio of songs to start off an album.
