- Today dad and I do something we’ve never done before but something I’ve wanted to do for a long time and that’s work on a piece of old heavy machinery. Today we found a 1940s cable driven bay city model 30 crane / dragline. It’s at an old family run rock and sand mine and it hast ran in over a decade so we’re going to see if it’ll run and move. The mine is being sold and this might have to go.
Business inquiries and if you have an abandoned vehicle you think dad and me might be interested in email us here

Interested in pre 1980 abandoned cars or trucks/ barn finds. (Not interested in foreign cars) and 1st and 2nd gen Cummins (89-98) diesels only - ยานยนต์และพาหนะ
Don't let @Diesel Creek see this, Matt over there will go crazy... Haha
I contacted him about it to ask him some questions actually.
Whelp to late, put a tracker on it as you will then be able to track it to Matt’s house after it mysteriously disappears.
@@paulary5613 And Matt recently bought a heavy haul Mack truck with a gooseneck trailer.......LOL
Yes he Will 😂
I was hoping you were going to buy it, bring it to your place and hang a huge antique sign on it. Many years ago, I operated a very similar drag line except mine was made by Tonka. Same color though.
😂😂😂
when he engaged the gearbox and everything came to life that was a badass moment.
I'm 70 years old. When I was 19 an older gentleman told me how to remember the firing order of my 52 chevy pick up. 15 too young 36 too old 24 just right. I haven't heard that for years. You made my day....lol!!
Good job guys. Johnathan W. rescued an old crane. He had to crawl the crane about a half a mile to a low-boy to get it home.
That’s insane
That was a crazy project it was in horrible shape but he got it working
That would be very handy for moving equipment.
That was a cool video. Something different. Now that it runs and moves be easy enough to load. Thanks for sharing.
Look at you guys!! Driving that rig like old pros!! Amazing how it came right back to life. She's a gooder!!!
Your dad is my favorite part of your channel. Don't worry though, one day you'll be as cool as he is
Testament to old time build quality...deserves to have new glass.
But, it still runs! And is capable of working still! God Bless America and our ingenuity
What a sweet running engine !!!
27:15
A testament of how well things were built in the good old days.
I’m with you. The ingenuity that went into building something like that back then is cool as heck. I love that kind of stuff. The fact that it still functions is a testament to the times. No computers to tell them what to do. They just built it and it worked.
At first I was like um . Then I was blown away ! What an episodic adventure ! Although I was a bit freaked out when your Dad was by all those gears ! On the edge of my seat ! Best video ever Travis!
I learned something else today.
Cook, cool ,cool!! Thanks for sharing 😊
Bro. I hope you know how lucky you are to have your pops. And how lucky you are that he's been willing to pass along his knowledge to you. 💯👍
Great video I’ve always been fascinated by these cable boom cranes since I was a little kid seeing them in story books
This would be the first one I’ve ever seen running! Well done to you & your Dad to get this one running.
In my country we’d call that mining operation a Quarry , funny I’ve never thought of it as mining but it absolutely is
Cheers 🍻
I have to have to hand it to you and Rick ! You are becoming one of my favorite channels . I could be partial because I was brought to Arizona in 1966 when I was 13 . I live up in Buckeye . Instead of the rusty mold ridden machines the other channels have . I would much rather see our sun burnt non rusty desert machines . You work on stuff the way I would , Laying on my back in the dirt in Arizona heat ! Nothing better ! Scott 🌵
Diesel Creek, Letsdig18, Dirt Perfect, Scrappy Industries... Just to name a few.
Thats amazing how preserved that thing was just sitting there so many years
Travis, it’s nice to see how you and your father look everything over before doing anything. This is a nice video, love the contents.
Ive watched a lot of vids on TH-cam but this is right up there with the best! Absolutely amazing seeing this old gear come back to life. watching the master clutch engage and it started to spring to life was unreal. Awesome American made piece of gear. Love you channel and your videos.
G'day from Adelaide, South Australia
Thanks for watching from Australia. Love the engineering of these old machines.
I'm happy to see that those two engines sold and are going to new homes instead of winding up in a junkyard and rusting away to dust !
Good rescue.
I love old big diesel machines, keep up travis!
Travis goes Diesel Creek / Scrappy industries 😊
I was just about to post this!!
Me too. Matt , and scrappy industries can help you Travis.
Great video. Definitely made in the USA.
Really love the variety of stuff in Travis's channel, Such a great man❤.
Glad you like the variety !
SAM from Scrappy Industries is your man for Bay City stuff.
Purrrrrs like a kitten, these old engines fire right up when not abused. You won't see a modern engine do that in 70 years
Travis and Richard that’s amazing you got it running and moving.. Enjoyed this video very much. Lots of these back in the day were steam shovels. That would be really more interesting than a flat head engine. But doing stem would be a task. Thank you men. Loved it ! ❤👊👍💯
Travis
I really enjoy the info and background you give to these videos.
I especially enjoy the little sightseeing tours and info you sometimes film when you go to pick up a vehicle.
Wish you did more of them.
This was a good one!
Have fun at the Duct Tape Drags ...
Thank you glad your along for the ride
Been awhile since i watched you. Thanks for helping Dalton from Pole barn garage out!
Thanks for another , Brother !
I love the way it sounds in gear, sounds like work being done. Wild how the exhaust is just a hot pipe in the middle of the cab lol. Thing is very cool. Also 24:24 this whole sequence with the outside shot was really cool, I like that kind of detail
Fascinating. Thanks for taking this one on!
Thanks for the content Travis. Pretty interesting. I couldn't imagine sitting next to those exposed gears all day long.
Interesting subject and man, it was nice to see that crane running.
The desert out here has it's treasures.
Seeing those gears move when dad hit the master clutch was awesome
Hey Travis ! Awesome video man. I am here for the car content but as a mechanic in the Australian mining industry this really interests me seeing this old machine roar back into life after many decades asleep. Cheers buddy to you and your father
G,day Travis and Rick from Sydney Australia. That's an iconic machine here, as it is the Master Builders Association logo.
This is what a good hybrid and being awake at 2 a.m. bring me-finding interesting creators such as you and your Pops. Awesome you work together. Worth a sub. ✊🏻
That right there is in excellent condition for its age ! I scraped a baycity model 35 out years ago, it was totally worn out but I kept the cat 318 densely for my 22B bucyrus Erie still running as of last weekend!
I worked on an irrigation pump pulling rig. It had 2 cable drums like that has, the band brakes would drag on the drum . That is what that spring was for to help pull it away from the drum.
There were cone clutches to engage and brakes to hold.
Am jealous. Mine was a hand crank to start the pony motor. No heat or fan. Just a front window.
I’ve always thought that equipment was easier to get going than old cars and trucks ! Everything is easier to get too .
Great work! The thing that saved it is the environment it’s been in all these years! Preservation!
Yes it definitely preserved it as a great example
Excelente!
Thank you for watching glad you enjoy 👍🏻💪🏼

Travis, I have a 39 ford v8. I switched the 6v to 8 v battery. Lights, gauges still work, better cranking. All old 9n tractors used 8 v batteries. Just some info for you.
I've Never Seen Like That Before. Look Cool.
More great content! Thank you. I’ve never been afraid to get under a hood and see what I can figure out…or totally mess up…. This one was something else! I would have been completely intimidated. It amazes me that it ran and moved under its own power. I look forward to your next video. Oh and a big shout out to your father…I will NEVER forget the firing order again!
The radiator, just need up dated, I would love that corn binder dump truck and especially a 1971C 60 Chevy, , if there are any on this property, lol thanks duct tape drags , where , when , thanks BigAl California
When things were made to last! Great content guys 😊
Great deviation of content! I really enjoyed seeing this. The in-cab moving parts and engine could be easily closed off with expanded metal, heck, even chain-link fencing would probably work. I would use solid sheet metal immediately by the operator, about operator elbow high. Yep, it should be put to good use somewhere doing what it was built to do!
I like how all the asbestos dust blows around at about 30:00. Take a deep breath.
Great video Travis. Enjoyed watching. 👍🏼👍🏼
A cup of coffee and another great video...I like the information you share..😊
New subscriber here, damn that was fun to watch and seeing the outcome 👍. Well done 😊 Well worth watching.
A real cool pice of history,..for sure..Travis ..
This video was different but very interesting. Thanks, enjoyed it a lot.
Matt Carriker might be interested in the crane for his resort / caves, but getting it to Texas....
I found out about your channel on Pole Barn Garage’s Duct Tape Drags video. He was right to check you out! You do a little bit of everything on your channel and I love it all. I’m subscribed.
Heck yeah thanks for joining
Hi Travis and Rick, A well chosen deviation from your regular projects. Ending with the mining plant tour was both interesting and educational! Your drone skills really help with understanding how each process works. Such an ingenious design! A fine example of how entrepreneurship and determination drive invention! Especially considering how long ago plants like your friends have been around. Great Video!!
Yes I love seeing things like that. Gives you a picture for how things work in this country and how the world keeps turning
Another person you could contact is Sam with Scrappy Industry's. He and Matt do a lot together and are heavily involved in the Steam show in PA. He has a couple of those old machines.
Came here from Pole Barn Garage, subscribed.
That’s awesome thank you
So kooool travis! I Would really LOVE too see you and dad do more heavy equipment revivals. P.s Majority of these old Draglines i've watched all had, 2 - stroke detroits, Hall Scott Gas engs, a Few Contentionals, Buda Diesels et. Gas flatheads like these are kinda rare i think. First one i've found. Btw even if these videos don't get as MUCH views I look at it in this pov. You learn a lot during the time working on things like this and the Journey / Fun part of it.
Those band clutches sound like a collection of banjos.
I run a crane like that for many years on rail road track. It started life as a steam engine and we converted over to diesel. You had to stand up to operate!
Amazing!
Here because of PBG. I love the videos!
Thank you!
Crazy stuff.
Very cool video thanks👌👍
Greetz from the netherlands
THose Bay Cities had the travel and swing on the same lever and frictions. There was a change over lever to switch it from one to anotherThey were the smallest of the drums in front of the engine.
Love your videos, keep them coming.
That piece of equipment in order to pass MSHA inspection all the cables would need to be replaced. Rusty and frayed cables are a big no-no and I'm sure there's a whole lot of other things that would need to be inspected. There would be an awful lot of work needs to be done to it in order to bring it back within compliance. I am surprised that. Daryl would have you guys around there without wearing hard hats steel toad boots and safety vests. That is considered a mining operation
But it was a lot of fun watching you bring the old beast back to life and see that it's part's are working. The men that use those pieces of equipment when they were new were some tough old boys and safety was not a number one priority. Thanks for the video. Watching you from Yuma
I agree with the Emma but a dragline isn’t considered a hoisting rig but all the same cables need to be inspected and replaced if bad.
Great stuff gents
Unbelievable, that’s crazy
COOL!
Amazing, you never see equipment like that anymore. Stuff was built to work, built to last… now it’s built to last just long enough until it’s paid off, just in time for you to buy a new one. We complain manufacturers build things to be replaceable not repairable, but thing is they only make it that way because our society has come to view everything as disposable and replaceable. I love old tools, old machines, old cars/trucks… things I can fix myself and maintain without having to have advanced degrees and million dollar shops.
Matt at Diesel Creek or his buddy Sam at Scrappy Industries
Fantastisch video
Hope Matt from diesel Freek is interested
Your channel and diesel creek are my favorit channels!!
Gr from the Netherlands!!
Travis , love your content.
This episode has a strong " Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel" vibe going on here.
I love that book. The best.

So many moving parts, no way that would be wide open these days lol
Your dad and I are probably around the same age. I graduated high school in 1980.
Is there any 55 Chevys cars or truck’s?? I’m looking for a car Chevy any shape, thanks BigAl California.
Had a fuel pump like that in my B1600 Mazda pickup those pumps pump like crazy. Had a switch on it as it would flood the carburettor so i would prime it start th pickup and the switch on the pump
What the heck a crane build 😮
Going to cost thousands of dollars to have all those truck / heavy equipment tires hauled off
Hello Travis and your dad named Rick.
I was pleasantly surprised to see a gas engine in this crane. An old flathead at that!
Don't scap that crane , it's badass!
Your having to much fun LOL 😂🤣
VEry Interesting Video on Trac Hoe! Thankyou!
Sam from Scrappyindustries cousin owns one, he would be a good guy to ask about it!
Guys - Were you able to determine who manufactured that engine, or any details about it? Loved this one.
Made by Hercules engines
Would a 'Fingernail File' work better than sand paper? Also and by the way...Check with 'Jonathan W', he most likely be able to help with the BIG machinery!
I’ve seen his channel yes
Awsome
You guys should buy it just to have it never know what you can trade that for later maybe a 3rd gen fully forged and built 😉 you never know
Keep us up to date about the fate of the crane
Travis, did you say that your friend has purchased this old crane ?
On top of the noise, I wonder if there would be health issues due to asbestos on the shoes and clutches.
