Totally fantastic, I really liked how you showed a picture of each bit with its name, that's a godsend for people trying to learn and find out what tools they need. All carvers and turners and smithies need to do this! Just one thing you forgot to mention, what sort of finish did you use at the end? Linseed?
Nice skull Matt, I like how the teeth turned out I use that bit a lot. The butterfly was cool too. Can't wait to see the next project. Keep up the good work 👍
I take it you mean more compact than a band saw? Nothing comes to mind (there could be something out there though). Very aggressive burrs like the extreme Kutzall Flame, hand sawing maybe, I do use the little terrier which I have videos on, this is expensive and slightly dangerous to use though. Sorry not really great advice
I recently had a tree that the top 1/2 of came down in a wind storm, right across my fence. I'm pretty sure it's a Popular but it was heavily spalted. When I cut down the rest I was surprised to see that spalting ran the entire length. Now I've got a log about 16ft long and a little over 24 inches in circumference. Spalt through, as I said, it's entire length. Is that normal. I thought spalting was usually isolated to a section of a tree
I don't know that much about spalting in trees, in my opinion it probably would go through the whole tree given enough time. My father made these cool butterflys out of spalted wood by bandsawing thin slices and using them as wings. the two slices next to each other gives a mirror image of the spalted pattern.
@@MattCarves I appreciate it. It's kind of funny, when I first saw it (the fence) I was about sick, I've got some money tied up in it. Then I got a good look at the log and I thought, ok, I'll take that trade

Is there something more compact I can use to carve hardwood blocks down to the general shape I need before I start carving details?

Nice skull! I suck at skulls! Lol.
What was the long burr/attachment you used in the beginning to rough out the eyes?
