    @7:36 'the Nazi' salute...I think the intended gesture the students were making was the Bellamy salute (flag salute), which was used in the late 19th and early 20th century during the pledge of allegiance. This salute became overshadowed and put to general disuse when it was infamously adopted Nazi Germany and fascism. There may be room for interpretation however, as the whole classroom is seen facing away from a flag that is hung in an unconventional/controversial manner. There is just so much artistry in the music, lyrics and overall presentation of the video that one could draw their own conclusions based on the story presented. Truly a masterpiece!

      @mikenorton632 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Bellamy salute is palm up, the Nazi salute is palm down. The pledge starts with your hand over your heart, and when you say "to the flag" you extend your arm toward the flag with your palm up, and finish the pledge. The pledge also did not have the words "Under God" at the time.

    for anyone interested in knowing more about the real story behind this song, there is a video by channel "Popular Crime" called "Jeremy Wade Delle | The Tragic Real Life Story Behind Pearl Jam’s Song Jeremy" that has a compilation of all the information about the case. It is a very respectful video and also very sad.

    It's called the Bellamy salute and yes, that was originally how we saluted during the pledge of allegiance (in 1892) and later replaced by hand over heart in 1942 due to obvious reasons

    For everyone saying the song was about Jeremy Wade Delle, you're only half right... That's the main inspiration for writing... The second verse is about a kid Eddie had issues with in school, that shot up a classroom while Eddie heard it from the hallway.... Also the bullying was the other kid..... Jeremy wasn't noted to have been bullied, but had severe mental health issues, divorced parents, and his dad was trying like hell to get him treatment, and his mom was somewhat absent and didn't take warnings from people about his behavior beforehand as seriously as she should've.

    For those confused about the "Nazi salute". Like most things, the Nazis co-opted things that already existed and made them infamous. The Nazi symbol was originally from India if I remember correctly. The salute used to be a general flag salute before the Nazis ruined it for the rest of the world.

    @8:40, it's actually 2 stories intertwined.. One part is when Eddie was in school n they picked on a kid, and then there's also Jeremy's story which Eddie felt like he deserved more than a paragraph in the newspaper....@10:34, Jeremy Wade Dell took his life in front of his class in Texas. @11:08, no no no, Eddie took his own school experiences interwoven with what he'd read etc about Jeremy..the whole song isn't based on Jeremy's home life but more so the kid that Eddie went to school with...Eddie had an interview and said the best way to show bullies is to grow up n make something of yourself not to take care of it the way Jeremy did. And Jeremy had been in n out of mental facilities n stuff so it wasn't just that he was picked on..he had issues for some time.

    That's not the Nazi salute. It's the Bellamy salute, it's how we used to salute the flag during the Pledge of Allegiance.
    It so similar to the Nazi salute that when Hitler began doing it we changed how we saluted our flag.
    My guess is that it's there to draw people into paying attention to the video, thus Jeremy's story.
