Ghost Of Little Girl Seen Playing Here | St James Cemetery | Liverpool Catacombs

  • St James Cemetery in Liverpool really has it all, A vampire, a witch, and the ghost of a little girl called grace. The site was originally a quarry dating to the 16th century and the stone it produced was used in many buildings in the city. When all the useable stone was exhausted in 1825, a new use was found for the site. The cemetery opened in 1829, and planned to use the rock as catacombs, however it wasn't a popular choice and many weren't even excavated.
As we walk around, keep your eyes peeled for the ghost of little Grace, she's said to still play here, just as she did when she was alive.

I used to *hide* in the quietness of this cemetery during school lunch time when I was a 12 year old. The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts was originally the Liverpool Institute Grammar School, just a five minute walk, if that from the noisy playground. I hated the school, the noise, the bullying and the formality of the old fashioned way of 'teaching'.
We weren't 'allowed' to leave the school grounds during break times but it was so easy to escape the confines of this hellhole through a gap in the fence behind a tree. I knew the cemetery far better than the Maths, Latin and Physics the school were trying their best to teach me. There were little 'stickleback' fish in a rectangular shaped memorial pond, lovely clear water with pondweed and snails. I remember washing my hands in the water from the Spring but never drank from it! The cemetery was my escape for 45 minutes at lunchtime every day for almost a year. I don't think the 12 year old me could have coped without that safe space, bully-free, peaceful sanctuary.

@@deadgoodwalks I'm wondering if the 'Memorial Pond' with the stickleback fish I mentioned is actually the run-off water from the natural spring. It seems funny to say I have happy memories of this Liverpool cemetery, but I really do! And you're the first person I've shared my story with. 😊

Lovely video Dan. Pleased that you found the engraving of 'Little Grace', it isn't easy to find. Apparently, grace was the illegitimate child of a wealthy merchant, and when she died aged 4, he had her buried without a marker. Her ghost appeared to one Joseph Donough while he was visiting the cemetery, and showed him where she was buried, and it is said it was Joseph who etched her name in the rock near her burial place. At 28.20 in your video, 2 of the vaults you are in front of, were broken into in the late 1960's. A policeman found some young boys playing football with a human skull in Duke St. They took the policeman to the cemetery where they had found the skull, and the policeman then discovered 2 vaults had been broken into, and items stolen from the coffins inside. lovely place to spend an evening. atb Mike

Thanks for the info Michael. I’d heard that story about the 2 boys and the skull before but I completely forgot it was here! It’s a shame we don’t know Grace’s story for sure but I guess it adds to the mystery.

At 3:25 you feature a stone of Mary Allen and her son Ernest. I felt led to research their story and this was such an avoidable tragedy, but no blame to the captain, he honestly didn't know the weather would become hurricane-like, according to official accounts.
Mary Allen and her son had been over on the island inspecting an extension to their property - Hawthorn Cottage in Maughold. Mrs Allen was a Sunday school teacher at St. Luke’s church at top of Bold Street ( now known as the bombed out church). They caught the tram into Ramsey to make the sailing.
When they boarded, the weather was moderate, although the barometric pressure was dropping. The captain decided to sail anyway and so they set off at 1:15 pm expecting weather to hold until they reached port.
By all accounts, this ship was the oldest and smallest ship in the fleet by 1909, however, she was considered the most reliable in bad weather.
By 6:35 pm the weather took a turn for the worse with 24 ft waves and a large wave overwhelmed the ship. All were lost in this tragedy, with sea watchers seeing several dead sheep, a piano and several bags of turnips floating. Five days later they stayed recovering bodies.
Ernest’s body was later recovered from the ship. His mother remained lost at sea. The captain's body was washed ashore on Ainsdale beach in Southport.
So sad.. They never found Mary...

We have a Grace here in Savannah, Georgia. She is interred at the Bonaventure Cemetery along the coast. She died of a fever on Easter. And her grieving parents had a life sized replica of her carved of marble and place on her grave. She is fenced off and she has been heard laughing in the cemetery. Her statue is so life like. It must have cost thousands in the 1800's.

I think that is the most beautiful video in a graveyard that I have seen to date, anywhere. I might be biased because, although I now live on the West Coast of Canada, I am originally from Liverpool and remember the Protestant Cathedral and environs so well. However, I am ashamed to say that I never knew this lovely cemetery even existed. I saw lots of sirnames which could well have been attached to my extended family as well as the Maritime connections. Bravo. Great viewing.

What strikes me about these Victorian era graves is the relative youth of those interred, not only in the UK but here in the US as well. Rarely older than 65 or so. Back then, this was considered a ripe old age, I suppose. Another lovely walk. Thank you!

That is because Medical Science was not as advanced back then as it is today. No NHS either, a lot of people lived in very unsanitory cramped housing, no flushing toilets with open sewers on the streets many having to share a communal water pump or well these water sources would often end up being polluted by the sewerage, this was a recipe for disaster causing many people to die young due to diseases such as Cholera, Typhus, Dysentrey etc. Add in the fact a lot of these people were working class and worked damn hard some would say to hard. We are so lucky to live in the modern age. It was a tough life living in the Victorian and Edwardian era if you were not wealthy.

Curious - in one of your videos about two months ago, you mentioned when you went in to a room full of urns, it felt like you walked in to a room of people watching you. Have you ever seen anything unexplained during your visits? I know that’s not what you’re about but I’m just curious if you’ve seen anything? Another fantastic video with the people of yesteryear. Thanks Andy

I lived in Lexington, Kentucky for 21 years and had worked for the Lexington Public Library's local history room. Was kind of surprised I hadn't heard of him so I looked up William Barry Taylor and find that according to the Kentucky Encyclopedia, while his memorial stone is in Liverpool, he's buried in Frankfort, Kentucky which is the state capital. Here is the Wikipedia article on Taylor which also includes a portrait of the man. Thought you might find it interesting. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_T._Barry

Thanks mate for finding a few more THRELFALLS. (Liverpool branch)
John Mayor Threlfall may have died a lunatic? The family in Liverpool was also know for Threlfall’s brewery in Liverpool. Also, there was a Thomas Threlfall (Lead fireman) who survived the Titanic sinking. I don’t know where he is buried…keep up the hunt! 😊 Cheers. R. THRELFALL

Did they used to bury one person on top of another ( family members ) it seems a lot of these old cemeteries are very crowded with the graves and stones. Very ancient and beautiful the green grass and the ornate stone markers. I just wonder about how they kept up. Thank you for doing these videos. Love it

Beautiful old cemetr. In Massachusetts USA there is more space between graves, where are the bodies buried, or have there been multiple burials in each location and markers just nearby?

Hello dear you just walked over where the vampire is. Hes buried next to his wife's. You can smell the garlic what is on top of his grave sometimes wild garlic that no one can pick. He was buried in everton till the council wanted the land to build houses on it so he was brought here to st james cemetery he is buried face down with stake in his heart. If you watxh ghost dimension st james cemetery there's a guy who knows about the vampire and he's awesome he as his own you tube channel to. Please don't go alone at night take someone with you because its very very haunted its scary in the daytime let alone night time. There's a spring too on the back wall.
