Mouthing is the equivalent to people holding hands. It shows that your dog trusts and loves you.

My dog knows the meaning of no . He also checks my face, body language and tone of voice when I am saying NO. We are companions and have developed a good healthy relationship over the years. We adjusted through time . We are older now and both sleep alot. We love each other and enjoy our lives together. The way it should be with your dog companion.Developed over the years!❤

    1. Fear
    2. Feeling unwell or in pain, especially if you accidentally touch them in an area that is painful.
    3. Resource guarding
    4. Playful nipping
    5. Mouthing behavior - a displacement behavior when they are unable to do something they really want to do.
    6. Breed - Small breeds are more likely to bite. Herding behavior in herding breeds.
    7. Play biting - need to be socialized to develop bite inhibition with humans.
    8. Attention seeking behavior
    9. Protecting their pack, whether a mama dog with her puppies, or protecting their human pack.
    10. Nibbling to show love and affection; they do this with their siblings when puppies.

My golden retriever use to hold my hand and walk me back to the house when I got off the school bus. Today I am 42 and my 2 golden retrievers are just as mouthy, but they have only ever broken skin by accident with puppy teeth. Once they got adult teeth they never broke skin. Once or twice during horse play they might leave a light bruise. But they know that its only ok to horse play like that with me. The rest of my family doesn't get rough play. They go to daycare twice a week at an open fence doggy daycare at a farm 2 miles down a dirt road here in Maine. Best doggy daycare in the world. They do have a fence but with owner permission and good behavior the best dogs earn the right to follow the owner around the property on his light farm chores and for walks in the woods. If I show up and my dog is wet, slightly muddy and full of burdoks and doesn't want to leave, I might be in for an annoying grooming session but I will know he had a great day.

I know we should not play with them that way but if you bring me a gentle dog, guess what?
I will gently stick my hand into their mouth or gently play with their nose and gently shake. Usually, they will play fight with me. The last dog I did this with was a Saint Bernard. He was such a lovable dog. He laid down and I could not resist. I touched his nose and he rolled over and grabbed my hand and we played for about five minutes on the floor before his owner remarked how quickly he bonded with me.
I had a poodle (and a Pit Bulldog) growing up and I used to hand wrestle with the poodle and I really loved playing with Pierre in this manner. He loved it, too.
Rocky, the Pit Bulldog was “too heavy biting” as a pup but as he grew up he became very gentle (at least inside the house) and I could play with him in a similar manner.
I cannot count the number of times I meet someone with a puppy and I tell them that I cannot help it but I have to “step into the dog’s world” and I wrestle gently with them. It’s as
If we are littermates. I chase them. I run from them. I fall on the ground and the jump all over me and I roll them around, tickle them and continue until they are tired.

    • @ldever3
      @ldever3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Yes, that is how I play with my dog. Neither is trying to hurt the other. Although she accidentally slammed her giant Charley Brown sized head into my nose once, when I was bending down to tickle her stomach. I was never hit that hard when I did tai kwon do. She didn’t even know it happened. So be it. It comes with the territory.

This isn’t 100% what this video is about, but the de-learning the attention nipping reminded me of when my guy Asper was a puppy and nipped at my heels. I froze to teach him that wasn’t okay, and MAN did it hurt to just stand there and wait for him to get it 😂

There's also simple holding, too. You stop petting so they hold your hand and pull it back for more scratches, or the proud mother pulling you over to meet her pups.
One of my girls used to wake me up in the middle of the night by lifting my hand with her mouth and then laying under it. He older sister just pushed in under my arm but the younger one did it differently. Eventually we got used to it. I stopped waking up and she learned to just nuzzle my hand for me to instinctually cuddle her as we slept. Something my girlfriend got angry at because it never worked for her.

Yes I've got a half jack Russell half pit and he knows how to play rough yet when I tell him to chill or enough, he listens. Just got him a little sister about 1.5 months ago. We were both a little scared of having a new one around especially since ahe was basically a newborn. But we have both grown to love her very much and she's a great fit because she cam play rough with him and it gives me a break! I still have to do my part for sure and we walk 2-3 ×s daily at least 15 min a walk. They are my best friends and don't know what I would do without either one at this point. Man's best friend for sure! The pup is also a pit mix according to the woman I got her from and she definitely acts like one but can't even guess what she's mixed with. Great companions and a lot of work especially in an apartment where u can't just kick them outside. We'll worth the effort though because they return all the love! Love my hounds!! And I'm a almost 40 working man that's not ashamed of his dedication to these animals! They are better than any human I've ever met!

Two of our dogs will bite if you attempt to clip thir claws: mom was my fault, i accidentally cut too short once when she was a pup, and 9 years later she still remembers the pain! Her daughter must have experienced the same with one of her previous owners, but worse, because I can't even get close with the clippers while she's sleeping!!! Turns out that they are able to manage their claws on their own, even the dew claws, so phew! And then there's porcupine quills: my first lady was always the hardest hit, and we had a few nights yanking quills until 3am... meanwhile, the ordinarily docile and placid lady would have only twelve quills in her face (as opposed to the HUNDREDS her companion would have!) and she shredded my arm when I tried to restrain her for quill-extraction! Still have the scars, and this is a dog that fostered chicken chicks, gentle as can be with all manner of stock and babies! But a downright priss when it comes to pain or the potential for!

Re: Reason 9: My first dog, when my wife and I added a new kid to the household, treated the new kid like her own puppy, and was very protective of them.
When my wife would nurse, my dog would stand guard, and threaten Doom, Destruction, and Being Dropped Into The Litter Box upon any possible threats.
When someone would come over, my dog would indicate to the guest that she was protecting the kid, but once we showed my dog that the guest was ok (by handing them the kid), she would go quiet.
When the kids were outside, she would go out there with them, and would refuse all instruction to come in until the kids were back inside.

Neighbors pit will walk up behind someone and nip the fingertips and wait to be chased. It would get a good lead, stop and wait for you to catch up, then take off again. After a little distance it would turn and it was its turn to chase you. Dog really needs a friend.

My dog plays very roughly and uses her teeth quite a lot. She extremely rarely plays with dogs, but when we play together, she growls a lot and nips my arms. I am always in control of our game, but to an outsider who is not familiar, it would look very aggressive (and lets add to this that she is a half pit).

As an example of #2 our dog got into a fuss with a porcupine and as my father was pulling quills our dog decided she had had enough and grabbed my father’s wrist. She didn’t break the skin however my father said it HURT. So at that point we took the dog to the vet.
Getting to #9 guarding our dog knew who had been invited into our house and would allow those people in when we were gone to care for the milking. However just being “at” the house wasn’t enough. The man delivering gasoline for 10 years couldn’t get into the back porch to leave the bill if we weren’t there.
She never bit, however her growl was enough to stop someone. That said my uncle one day was helping my father move farm equipment and she hadn’t seen him in years and the dog wouldn’t let my uncle into the pickup until my uncle remembered her name and then she flopped on the seat.

I love playing biting games with my dogs. I always teach them to bite properly. My girl has learned to control her bites very well. When she bit too hard, I would yelp and redirect her attention to a toy. Over time, she started to take the toy herself if she got too excited. She also practiced biting on her own legs haha! It's a pity that my previous dog didn't know how to bite; he just didn't like it. He was a labrador - too gentle to bite

In the event dog should bite you. The last thing you should do is pull back. Yeah you’re instinct sake. Try to yank your hand away, but a dog‘s teeth are designed for ripping flesh. So when you’re pulling back here, the dog said his teeth even deeper. What you need to do is push your hand into the mouth more and if you can stick down the dogs throat, trust me, dog gonna be trying to push your hand out of it’s mouth so fast it will make you laugh. Seriously if you have a dog that likes to bite, push your hand into its mouth and as soon as you notice it trying to apply pressure by closing its jaw, push your finger down its throat. The dog will start to gag immediately tongue to push your hand out of its mouth as it opens its mouth and backs away. The dog finds it unpleasant and will quickly learn it’s not a great idea to do that.

I have an 80 pound pit bull. He grabs my hand with his teeth and walks with me ALL THE TIME. It's always seemed like an affectionate "hand holding" kind of thing, but I'm still extremely aware how easy it would be for him to take my fingers off. Luckily he's the hammiest thing ever so I usually just keep walking and let him. He's never hurt anyone or anything, guy broke into the chicken coop and tried to play with the chickens. No chickens were harmed, just freaked out by the gigantic animal in their space. He seemed disappointed that they wouldn't play with him.
He's got one of those faces that seems to tell everyone he's harmless and friendly. I've never met anyone who didn't instantly love my dog. It's weird because he's incredibly huge and muscular, but has this doofy smile and soft friendly eyes that are immediately disarming. He's a perfect example of the "gentle giant" archetype.

I’ve got a pitty. He’s got a VERY strong bite, but I’ve egg trained him because he’s around little kids in my family. He will not break an egg, but he can crack a 9inch diameter branch with one chomp. He gets mouthy with my 8 year old son, but never breaks skin.

If a dog bites your hand and you see a lot of blood afterwards or your hand is gone it actually means what I think it does...
Seriously if you have to explain friendly bites to someone that guy should not have a dog!

Dogs eventually learn that their teeth are sharp. If they love you, they'll refuse to bite you. They'll move their mouth away whenever you put your hand around their mouth. My Rottweiler used to take my hand and throw it on her head to pet her. She's a female so it makes sense.

    • @Smelly-Belly

She was a sweetheart and extremely friendly. Now her mother, on the other hand ✋️, was a true rot. Unpredictable and would randomly snap at a moment. As if she were bipolar or something. She wouldn't do it to me or my family members but to anyone else.

I have a 16 month Rottweiler and he's very playful so he uses his mouth a lot and he's a bit of a jumper. I usually have control over our play fighting but when outsiders see us, they get really concerned I'm actually being attacked LOL I'm a young lady that's 5'2 and 120lbs. so I understand what the perception is 😂😂

It sounds like your Rottweiler is full of energy and love! 😄 People don’t always get that it’s all in good fun when they see such a big, playful dog in action, especially with someone petite like you. As long as you two are having fun and you’ve got it under control, that’s all that matters! 😂🐾

I can imagine what it looked like. It would be shocking to a passerby.
In high school I would play roughly with my Pit Bull and his growl was very deep and we’d be “going at it” and I would run and no matter what I did he’d be at my heels and I’d screech like a car emergency stopping and he’d break and run away and I’d chase him. 😂
We had a poodle at the same time and Pierre would chase Rocky and would be mouthing him on the base of his tail growling the whole time.
It was a sight to behold. I would always intercept with them after a few minutes due to the type of dog Rocky was but I play fought with both and I’d have a trailer tire hanging in the tree and heavy duty spring in the front yard and people would stop and watch him REALLY going at that growling and shaking that thing. He loved it.
      God, those are pleasant memories.

Be aware that dogs are dangerous in a pack.... your loving pet can become a monster if you let it lose to join a pack.
Also small dogs know that they have no chance with larger animals (you included) if a dog is continually circling around behind you.
never leave your back unguarded. they are trying to "hamstring you" little dogs are especially prone to do this

My dog doesn't bite my hand, instead she keeps pawing at me, relentlessly, until I go out into the garden with her and throw dozens of sticks.
BTW - this is after we have taken her for a car ride to a forest nearby and had a nice long walk with other dog walkers
She is a GS rescue dog who was locked in a coal cellar with other dogs.
The first few nights she saw us getting into bed, then laying on our backs, she got up onto the bed and laid vertical on her back on top of me, with her four legs in the air. Never moved all night and many other nights, just copying us because she didn't know anything. Which meant I couldn't move either. Anyways, she is now settled and happy but we still have to spoilt her a bit, now, don't we? 👼

Actually if your dog is young you can train him to *NEVER* growl at you even when you take away his meal right from his mouth.
When you do that and he growls - quickly and decisively but lightly hit your dog in the mouth. Just once. Do that every time he growls in that situation. I did that to my family's rottweler when he was young and as a result I was the only person in the family who could literally walk up to him when he was eating and take his food. And he would just accept it.
