I love how all these 70's Oscar presentations open with old school Hollywood glitz and glamour routines. They are so classy and truly timeless!

I love Bette Davis's glasses and hairstyle here. She looks amazing. You can tell how petite she was standing beside Gregory Peck. Barbara Stanwyck looks stunning in the audience.

I was going to say, I noticed those too! ......I had a pair a few years ago that had " sparkles " on the frame too! But, I had them quite awhile and needed new ones and couldn't find any like that! They are all so plain and all look alike now!! They either don't have any or make any ' fancy ' ones anymore!!!

Debbie was such a passionate entertainer. So good at what she did. It would be easy to believe she orchestrated this entire performance on her own down to the smallest detail. She embraced her role of celebrity as a service to the people, and just having fun. God Bless!

Carrie Fisher will always be remembered for Star Wars whilst Debbie Reynolds will always be remembered for Singing in the Rain, Charlotte's Web and the Halloweentown films!
They were both marvelous. I believe Debbie was tired. When Carrie passed mum soon followed.

Wow, this opening ceremony is so comprehensive, entertaining and humble. What happened since then? Award ceremonies of our current era, seem to be built on popular jokes and bombastic, unattainable glamour. This ceremony is so grass roots, but filled with real talent....oh and Betty Davis' spectacles are AWESOME!

Carry Fisher had just starred in Star Wars when her mom, Debbie Renolds starred in this award show.
I am a bit too young to remember this but I grew up on classic films. I always think of these people as the real stars who had gravitas. Very few of today's actors have "it". Rip to Debbie, Carrie and all of the amazing talent that was lost this year.
The Oscars were still a must see event back then. Now it's must avoid event

Debbie Reynolds deserves a great deal of credit for her opening production number; she was 45 here and she is pulling out all of the stops- doing Singin In The Rain choreography, Saturday Night fever dancing, etc. with proficiency. It's wonderful to see Capra, Cukor, Reed, Borgnine, Robertson, Mancini, Hamlisch and so many others no longer with us. Bravo1
Also crazy to see Rita Moreno coming down those stairs knowing she had a major comedic movie release this year, in her 90’s!

Most of these stars were in their heyday when my parents were youngsters -- their generation had a real identification and reverence for this galaxy of incredible talent.
Not really. Great performances are timeless...I could list many of them, no matter what decade they come from.
+Teresa -- It is fantastic that you have high standards and that you keep alive the memory of great artists of the past. TCM plays an important role in making that possible for more people. Based on what I see all around, however, I think you are an exceptional (an exception to the general rule) and a knowledgeable viewer. I wish there were more.

How fitting to show the unsung praises of Debbie Reynolds in the opening number. No one knows what an all-around entertainer she was. To most slackers all they know is she was Princess Leia's mother. This opening number is what they should bring back to the Oscars. Entertainment is what Hollywood should be about, not stupid jokes by Jimmy Fallon or Kimmel or who's in the latest carpool with James Corden. Bring some class back to the Oscars and Hollywood.
I feel like they made some minor attempts when Hugh Jackman did musical numbers, but it's far from this quality. Not to mention that was several Oscars ago.

I believe Debbie Reynolds and Doris Day were THE most talented women ever to grace the Hollywood stage! Who else can say they can sing, dance, act - drama and comedy, as well as those two. Wow. Debbie is 46 here.

Gosh, I sure do miss the old Hollywood. It was such a magical time. Those were the days where one actually looked forward to the Oscars. It was always the event of the year. When one actually knew all the nominees and couldn't decide who to root for. It's sad it's no longer like that. So very, very sad. 😔

Bob Hope was 75 years old, 25 years older than the Academy Awards, when he hosted the 50th ceremony. Unfortunately, this Oscar presentation would be Hope's 27th and final time hosting before his death 25 years later at the age of 100.
He may have died at 100 but he died onstage that night at the Oscars.

Yes, It so upsets me that she was up there working her butt off while she should have been an academy award winner herself. She really never got the credit, but God bless her, she loved what she did and it showed in her performance, all of her performances were like that. I loved her so much. Still shedding tears over all that happened with her and Carrie.

Holy moly, the quick tempo of those honorees being ushered down the stairs was a bit frightening. That could've ended up in a geriatric heap.

Initially, Debbie Reynolds did a spectacular job in the opening number; she looked great and sang and danced a difficult routine flawlessly. The highlight of the introduction of past Oscar winners was Bette Davis, who was still articulate and also looked well. I just watched Davis in her last major film, Lindsey Anderson's The Whales Of August, and she was debilitated by a stroke and partially paralyzed . This was filmed after Davis had received her AFI life achievement award and she was considerably better.
Love that they actually never forgotten about Rudolph Valentino. He was dead for two years then when the Oscars started♥️

The attendees dressed beautifully. People were glad to be there. Bob Hope's jokes were G-rated. Wonderful films nominated that the public had actually seen. Dance routines that were glamorous and didn't make you cringe. And yes, the winners made front page headlines the next day. Now the headline is that each year sets a record for a smaller and smaller audience.

8:45 Fascinating to see the legendary costume designer and style icon Edith Head, to the left of the speaker. She doesn't disappoint here - incredibly stylish, aged 81 years! I noticed she's wearing her trademark 'theatre tokens' necklace, which was made up of a wide gold chain decorated with genuine old ivory discs engraved with the London Theatres they once allowed admittance to. Edith gifted this unusual necklace to Dame Elizabeth Taylor, who had always admired it. It was among the jewellery auctioned off for Aids charities after Liz died - it had a reserve of £1,500 but sold for over £200,000!
Edith Head must have been the biggest Oscar winner on stage, taking home a staggering 8 Oscars (from 35 nominations), for her costumes on legendary movies including 'Samson and Delilah', 'All About Eve', 'A Place in the Sun', 'Roman Holiday' and 'The Sting'.
She designed for stars including Cary Grant, Gloria Swanson, Grace Kelly, Fred Astaire, John Wayne, Doris Day, Tippi Hedren and Debbie Reynolds.
Edith Head was so in demand that she crossed over into TV, designing Endora's outfits for 'Bewitched', and guest starring as herself in a 1973 episode of 'Columbo', with actress Anne Baxter, in which her 8 Oscars were visible in the background of one scene.
Edith Head worked right up to her death. Her last movie work was the 1982 black and white comedy 'Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid', for which she designed Steve Martin's costumes. Edith Head wrote two style books in the late sixties that are still in print - I must buy them! An incredible woman.

Strangely poignant now, with Carrie (Princess Leia) and her mom Debbie Reynolds passing only a day apart.
Fun fact was how this was the year Star Wars swept the Oscars. I read somewhere that Carrie with her Oscar date was running late for the show, and her mom Debbie was already performing this opening when they arrived. Carrie did not want to go but went anyway to support George Lucas behind the scenes.

The curious mix of 20s nostalgia and 70s camp is such a Carter era / Reagan era staple. Honestly, the perfect intersection of greatest generation and baby boomer proclivities. I was born in 86 so I just barely remember this time but it looked like a lot of fun!
I had such a crush on Debbie Reynolds after seeing singing in the rain the first time as a kid in the 80s. Lucky enough to see Singing in the Rain in the 2000s.

It’s a shame they rushed all those icons on stage so fast. Each group was only on camera a fraction of a second. I was looking at the names but didn’t have a chance to see their faces. 😢It was fun to recognize everyone in the audience ❤Debbie was an awesome entertainer! WATCH THIS VIDEO if you have never seen Debbie Reynolds perform live. She had a regular show in Las Vegas as her bread-and-butter income, and you can get a sense of truly what a consummate performer she was. They called her a "triple threat" because she was Multi talented, being able to dance, sing and act. A real trooper and definitely unsinkable! Rest in peace mother and daughter, Debbie and Carrie.
1978 was the year I graduated from high school; I saw Star Wars at the drive-in theater in the San Fernando Valley, LOL. there were so many good movies that year!!
