Can I just say and not to pry or anything, I grew up around blind people my entire childhood and if I've learned anything from that it would be that the biggest mistake sighted parents make is babying the child too much. Try as hard as possible to keep Ted from feeling different than the other kids. Allow him to play sports and ride bikes and get him into clubs and organizations that will teach him life skills he needs to know. It is the biggest disservice to keep him from making mistakes. My mother worked at the NFB of Maryland and it is amazing what the people there can do. I still attend conventions every year and let me tell you, blind people can do amazing things.

How wonderful for Ted. My nephew & his wife (after 10 yrs of waiting, several let downs) just brought their little girl home. I wish I had adopted when I was younger but will sureley love our newest family member . TY for changing the course of this boy's life. He is so happy to have a family.
Before he was adopted Ted had a foreign tutor come volunteer to start teaching him English for a few hours a week to help with the transition. He is doing much better with English now and I believe his family has found ways for him to also keep up his Mandarin. He is a smart kid :)
When his teacher asked if he knew where he would be going upon adoption, he replied America. I think he must have through his days heard his friends left for US and longed to be adopted one day.
At 7:43 in the video you can see Benjamin in the background during Ted's going away party! I just saw Benjamin's adoption video with his new family :) It's amazing to watch these videos of orphans in the background who get adopted in later videos!

At age 17, I was a ward of Washington State and considered adoption as an option. Adoption did not turn out as an option for me. To this day, my biological mother refuses to engage with me as her son. It his her loss, but it is also my loss. I regret that I was not more proactive in pursuing adoption,... but what did I know... I was just 17.
Good question, every family, every child, and every situation is different. We have only worked with adoptions of children who were abandoned in China. In every case they have been given a new name by the family adopting them. In China, when they are found abandoned, they are given a name by the orphanage which, from what I understand, can sometimes be nice (other times not) but their family name is typically all the same based on the city they are in so it is always the sign of being an orphan. It is also really common in China to take an English name when people learn how to speak English. We worked in China for 2 years and were given Chinese names. It is less 'identity' than we would see it in the west. Most families also keep some of their Chinese name in their official given name (on their passport) as well so they have a choice of what to go by as they get older. In Ted's situation, it seems they are mostly using his Chinese name at home so maybe that is what he was most comfortable with. I believe Ted is still his legal first name (though I don't know for sure).
Also, why wouldn't they? That's normally the process you go through when you get a child. it should not be any different just because you don't have a biological child. (in my opinion). Also, usually it is nicer for the child to have a western name. I have a friend who was adopted from China and she was named Sara. Her parents kept her original chinese name as her middle name, but she was very happy about the change because she might have been bullied if she had kept her chinese name since it was very not-western, if you know what I mean.
Actually, the apostrophe can be used to contract works (e.g. making it is into it's or we will into we'll) and to show belonging. So Ted's is right because it means the story belonging to Ted. Just like you would write Annie's coat. Hope that makes sense!
Lady Howell no it doesn't. 's means belonging to whatever comes before the apostrophe. Ted's X = the X belonging to Ted. Where X is always a noun, a specific object or person. Ted's mother, Ted's ball. It only means "is" in a specific situation like followed by an adjective eg Ted's happy to get adopted, but Ted's very sad to be apart from his biological relations. Only other thing an apostrophe is for is contraction of words like he'll be living in a new country (he will) he won't forget about his country of origin (he will not) this type of thing
