Chaconne in F minor (PWC 43, T. 206, PC 149, POP 16) is an organ chaconne by Johann Pachelbel. One of the six surviving chaconnes by the composer, it is one of his best known organ works.
    #Pachelbel #Chaconne #Piano #Chaimovich
No information concerning the date of composition is known. Since the piece is more sophisticated than most other chaconnes, it may represent a late stage of development of Pachelbel's chaconne style.
The chaconne comprises a theme and 22 variations, the last of which is an almost exact repeat of the theme. The ostinato bass pattern is not kept intact in all variations, and disappears in some, anticipating similar passages in Johann Sebastian Bach's famous Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor, BWV 582. Pachelbel's variation technique serves to "dissect" the harmonies, rather than vary the "theme", which is typical of his mature chaconnes, including the Chaconne in D minor and the Chaconne in F major. The Chaconne in F minor has been described as one of Pachelbel's finest works. (from Wikipedia)
Here the work is performed by Vadim on a Steinway grand piano live at a public piano recital.

"Hidden content and treasures of Pachelbel's chaconne artfully emerge from obscurity in this exceptional, carefully crafted performance. Most of Pachelbel's chaconnes, some of his Hexachordum arias, John Bull's Walsingham Variations, many of JS Bach's chaconnes and fugues, and Debussy's 12 Etudes are examples of rare musical pieces where Vivaldi's “conflict between harmony and invention” is resolved by having multiple simultaneous musical lines that are simultaneously melody and harmony, working synergistically to generate an end result that is much greater than the individual themes and harmonies themselves. This piano performance of the chaconne is absolutely superb in revealing those different segments and their combinations, with an end result that is far greater than the sum of the parts. In this composition and performance, the somewhat artificial distinction between harmony and melody disappears. A universal, all-encompassing structure emerges.
From a technical standpoint, this melding of harmony and melody is very difficult to achieve with keyboard instruments or even orchestral arrangements. The extreme mastery of the required technical skills, and his use of the repeat sections to emphasize the different harmonic and melodic elements is ideal for this piece, and results in one of the most appealing and pleasing performances possible. His performance of the Bach-Busoni Chaconne for violin uses similar methods and approaches, with a equally superb result. It's difficult to know what Pachelbel and Bach intended. Busoni himself had a very different vision of his transcription, considering his recording of that work. Whether the original intent of the composer or not however, the resultant performances are remarkably fine, truly opening a new dimension to this music."

First off, I appreciate his playing and his sharing. Some works seem to me better interpreted than others. I like him on Beethoven but not so much in Chopin for example (the theme of Nocturne op.9, n.1 for example sounds too 'sharp' while I'd prefer it more vague and dreamy).
I think talented young pianists as Vadim are at a fork: once the technique is well acquired and they can play everything, what do they do now? Enlarge their repertoire for the demands of the concert system or work thorough fully and sensitively on the touch, on the sound?
Wish Vadim or any pianist would answer; I am curious because it is not an easy decision to make. Thumbs very up ! and to all of us, let the music warm our hearts and make us better... :)

@@tolgahanyldz3081 that might be possible, though the figuration which he uses for main theme (repeating one note and intersecting this pattern with another melody) seems to be inspired by theme of fugue BWV 565 :D

Some of the suspensions could be repeated, as they are lost on a piano. Besides the piano being slightly out of tune, this is a great performance.
