@@ngbstain3329 Actually the significance of Gabriel's Rebellion is not in the thwarted attempt to throw off slavery, but in how it demonstrated to the planter class that their fears about what was happening in Haiti at that very moment could clearly happen in Virginia (or South Carolina or North Carolina). From the trial records which can be read at the Library of Virginia, testimony showed the capacity of Blacks to organize and resist on a scale thought unlikely if not impossible. The storm and the betrayal may prevent us from knowing if or to what degree the rebellion would be successful. But this event affected the presidential election that year, and it along with the outcome of the Haitian revolution continued to be referred to by politicians all the way through the civil war. Nat Turner's rebellion showed in no uncertain terms the violence needed to maintain slavery was and would be necessary to end slavery. It is powerful history to know and learn from.
This all took place basically where the neighborhood I grew up in was built. In high school I remember reading a sentence or two in the history books and that was about it. In college I had a professor who went into more detail. During his lecture I realized that I lived just down the street and traveled through the area on almost a daily basis. I thought it was a cool story and meant more because of my connection with the area.
Richmond was the second largest slave port in The United States. Richmond has a history of slavery, racism, injustice , discrimination, segregated communities and jim crow. Racism and classism is still a big problem in Richmond.
Gabriel did not steal the pig, it was given to him for the profits he received for the extra work he did to enrich his master. Passer-byes (Over-seers) challenged them as they were killing the pig to cook. This ended in a fight and the over-seer was on the losing end. Gabriel was not killed because his master did not want to lose such a valuable money making asset. The punishment of branding his hand brought Gabriel to the reality that he was not free.
Young man, you went over and beyond with displaying your fine attention to detail. Thank you sir. As I attended middle and highschool in Raleigh N.C., Milledgeville GA, and Tacoma WA. I never heard of this story which is in my opinion as high regards as Harriett Tubman, when it comes down to U.S. History, and what schools should be made mandatory in curriculums to be taught. I have digressed from being upset with various Black History movements that aren't taught in school; basically I concluded with its really not their job, and such history should be taught at home, communities, or churches as it did in the early 1900s with Blacks. In current times, we depend on schools to teach such history, which was left out their curriculums by designed.
Thanks for this. Just finished reading "Black Thunder" by Arna Bontemps largely based on the planned rebellion. Great to see the markets and actual area in real life.
@loupremo not sure, richmond has has a ton of controversy recently over a parking lot for MCV Hospital that is thought to be over top a slave burial location. There is a good chance thats the location. Thanks for watching.

No. Actually "Uncle Tom" comes from the book by Harriett Beecher Stowe called "Uncle Tom's Cabin". Uncle Tom was a slave and gentle soul who had a close fatherly relationship with his owner's daughter "little Eva." He is actually based on a real man named Josius Henson who was an abolishionist that helped to free many slaves. People didn't like the way he was portrayed in the book because they thought he appeared too docile. Like the happy slave with no desire for freedom. When people say "Uncle Tom" they really have it all wrong because the real "Uncle Tom" was a freedom fighter for his people!
These rebellions frightened the South and were often blamed on Abolitionist from the North trying to abolish slavery. This only made them more stubborn and hostile to any compromises that may raise the hopes of the slaves.
White people! Please let someone of color narrate your people of color videos. It just seems so weird to hear like this. And why this video after all the motor bike videos? What's your real plan? Lol
You missed a vital Individual who is the primary individual who went and told at the time the plantation owner of Crump Park also known as Meadow Farms. This individuals final to the history of what took place. If we’re gonna talk about history did it all should be documented on exactly what did it. I am from that location I know where the tree isOr rather was I lived down the road from the plantation it’s self. Let’s make sure we give all the information and not leave a key components out thank you
geesh, give the guy some slack. He isn't presenting this as an acceptance constraint for George Town Law. He did a fine job, and if any thought the name of the subject that disclosed that information was prevalent to them, they would had researched deeper for that.
roots is false story ,and we wasnt slaves we were servants,we had servants , they switched our stories none of my family came from africa,we need to tell the real story not the europeon story’s a lie
Don't forget they were fighting for their lands not their freedoms. So any "descendants" should know that. They were killing squatters and thieves as usual at that time. That's why so many of these so called revolts happened at this time. Trying to take back what belonged to them all along. Stop letting them narrate what we already know. Just listen to grandpa and great-grand ma...you know them, them real Niji's 😊💚🤎🐢

Great video. We are planning to drive to many of the sites ourselves as a way to learn more about this local history.

It really wasn't a rebellion because he didn't get a chance to do anything. Now Nat Turner that was rebellion. Should be called Gabriell's conspiracy.
The slaves were more honorable and trustworthy than non-slaves. This makes sense as the slaves were the Creator's heritage, Israel.
Do you happen to know the address of the historical marker or the other locations? I have been looking on Google maps but can't find anything
Thanks for making this man, great job

According to the Bible; all rebellion is against what God says. Violence is never the answer.
