He smiles every time we arrive to see him for the first 30-60 seconds or so. He's actually in good condition other than what appears to be cataract developing in his eyes. I am glad he is well. If he wasn't ill, then that smiling could be part of a process dogs use when introducing themselves. In order to "activate" their more advanced sense of smell, they have to open their mouth wide to expose sensory receptors to air and saliva within their mouth. What many say looks like smiling is actually what enables dogs to have their near-mystical ability to smell.
He appears quite unwell. I think he might have had an obstruction in his throat.
