    The 40th Anniversary sounds sad or sick. It almost sounds like a hardware issue :( But you made it clear it’s in the software. It’s a shame.

    My only problem is that ghosts don't work the way they should. At 2:22 Blinky starts circling the top left instead of going towards the top right like he does in the Arcade. It seems they switched Blinky and Pinky's target zones because she starts going to the top right, where Blinky should be. Also not really useful info, but Pac-Man doesn't munch as fast as he does in the arcade game. I've played this so much I noticed his mouth isn't as fast. 1 more thing, the ghosts eyes look huge in these ports
    Edit: Forgot to mention this, the screens too tall because some pixels seem doubled. It kinda gives the scared ghost sprite a bigger forehead

    • @GenXGrownUp
      @GenXGrownUp  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's your ONLY problem?

    • @02DooD

      @@GenXGrownUp Well the only major one. Gameplay is the biggest thing so the screen and other small things don't bug as much, but that audio is legitimately gross. It's way too noticeable

    • @corellioncrusaderproductio4679
      @corellioncrusaderproductio4679 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GenXGrownUp From a gameplay perspective, that is the only major problem with the ROM.
      - Ghost scatter targets are flipped on X axis
      - Frightened/Fleeing ghost do not pause scatter timer, meaning they can reverse in this mode.
      - Ghosts do now update their directions while in the tunnels, if a reverse is scalled it will not go through until they reach the end of the tunnel which means they get in a strange loop of going back and forth through the tunnel
      - Audio buffering is nonexistent, but not the worst
      - Pinky and Inky's starting positions are flipped. This means Pinky takes longer to exit than normal and Inky takes less time, which desyncs it from the actual game.
      You could go on and on about the differences, but the gameplay itself is pretty solid. Yes the sounds are a big factor.
      Also 02, the reason Pac-Man's mouth doesn't 'munch' as fast is because the original game uses the exact pixel location to determine what frame it uses. Basically the faster Pac-Man moves from pixel to pixel, the faster he advances through his frames. This one doesn't seem to use that system, but I could be mistaken.

    "What does all this mean in summary?" Easy, MyArcade doesn't give a damn and are just cranking these out for a buck. The Space Invaders was apparently just a case of accidentally failing upwards.

    • @GenXGrownUp
      @GenXGrownUp  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would've agreed with you twelve months ago, Allen. Two things have changed, though. First, the Premium Edition line do show a bit more care. Though they weren't perfect, they were miles closer to what fans like me would want than these players. Second, "cranking" is now past tense: "cranked" (or crunk? 😉) My Arcade hasn't announced or shipped anything new since SF2CE, and with nothing on the horizon, we may have seen the end of the My Arcade Micro Player mill. Failing upwards, though? Spot on.

    The ghost munching noise is wrong in both of those games, to the point of distraction. However, I'd generally agree that the handheld sounds better than the cabinet. I heard that the handheld is running a custom made Genesis version of Pac-Man... has there been any effort to extract the ROM and port it to the actual system?

    • @GenXGrownUp
      @GenXGrownUp  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm pretty sure they're both running on a Genesis core, Jess. I expect the 40th cab just used a different (read: worse) sound chip which was unable to accurately reproduce the sounds required. No ROM extraction efforts done by me.

      Not identical (shown by the date revision), but based on observation it's quite likely that the bulk of the functional code is unchanged. I suspect you're onto something, MusicMan. The ROM was also revisioned between the two as indicated by the date on the title screen, but that doesn't necessarily mean there was a substantial code change. The differences between the two to three revisions are stark and I would love to know how they were programmed. honestly i think you're a little too picky. i think they are all fine and i would play any of them. but dont get me wrong, you are right about a lot of things like ms pac man. that is meh. they are putting out a new edition of these though that are like the real deal.

      I respect your opinion, but disagree. Particularly on a unit earmarked to celebrate the 40th anniversary of such a landmark game? Anything short of accuracy is disrespectful. Thank you for watching, Heather! 😀

    The 40th anniversary version is completely low pitched. I do not prefer that low pitch sounds. 3.2/10
