I’m always about a decade behind when it comes to discovering new music. But Avey is my daughter’s partner, so I’ve really gotten to know and love their stuff over the past few years. Thanks for going over it all. 2 decades of AnCo material, that’s a lot! You’ve prompted me to revisit some of the albums I’m less familiar with.

Saw Avey Tare and Panda Bear open for a band called Love Life in the year 2000. It was in a basement in Oberlin, Ohio that was slowly flooding because of the torrential downpour happening outside. At that time they played songs from the album that they were working on to see how they played to live audiences, they were working on Holindagain and Here Comes the Indian. They were wearing native American headdresses and the only light in the room was tiny candles. It was the rawest live experience I have ever seen by a landslide. Their music was insane and Panda Bear's drumming was like nothing I had ever heard. It was like seeing a new music perspective being invented in real time.

@@KyleReidMu you know it was reallllly weird actually, I talked to Dave after the show, just asked him what the fuck their band name was and he said Avey Tare and Panda Bear... a few weeks later I picked up their first album, loved it, and was blown away that it was that wildly different than what I had seen. I was sure they were going to be something after that... then a few years later I was living with my girlfriend and picked up the Scene paper to see what bands were coming and saw that they had just played the day before at the bar a mile from my house and that they were called Animal Collective. It was weird following them after that. Saw them a few more times, their live show kept deteriorating and seemed like they were going through the motions. They were truly experimenting with sounds in new ways, from tribal music to The Beach Boys. Wild stuff.

I was honestly pretty terrified of spirit they’re gone for such a long time, but then I watched their live performance of the final section of Alvin row because it was sandwiched between daily routine and floridada and all of a sudden it started to click. Untitled seems like a pretentious joke on first listen, but the sound of that heinous, ear splittingly noisy synth combined with that gorgeous, twinkling piano is so cathartic I love it so much. It’s like the sonic equivalent of the tail end of a panic attack, where you start to come back from the edge of madness and how beautiful and serene the absence of racing thoughts can be after so much chaos

    • @heysatan8
      @heysatan8 ปีที่แล้ว

Untitled, yes! That song does something to me..... If you want a really cool experience, search on youtube the first 3 minutes of 8 1/2 (Fellini film) and play Untitled over it. It's a claustrophobic dream sequence that ends with the man flying in the clouds then falling into the sea. They both fit PERFECTLY and are the exact same length. I uploaded a fan video of it years ago, but it was finally taken down when they released the remaster. Highly recommend as a fellow fan of the song.

Strawberry jam was my first start to the band. Since I’m a huge fan of experimental rock, one day I wondered if there were any interesting experimental POP groups/albums out there. I came across a recommendation thread somewhere and someone mentioned strawberry jam. I was like “Animal Collective, huh? I’ve heard of them, let’s see what the commotion is about with these guys.”
I would do anything to hear Peace Bone for the first time again, cuz after being fucking blown away by that track and everything else, the rest was history and now SJ and MPP are two of my favorite albums of all time.

Im 33 and animal collective had their peak during my highschool days. you wouldnt think it but animal collective was a very internet centric band where people talked through forums and dissected everything they did. I still remember listening to leaked MPP in December. The nature of how they created their music and workshopped it live in front of their fans years before the song appeared on the studio album helped fuel their fandom definitely. We listened to Brothersport for 3 years before it was on the studio album and absorbed all the iterations of it through fan recorded live performances we shared with each other. I have a hard drive somewhere with tons of potato quality mp3s of their old performances. It was a really special time and place. My personal favorite era was post-Strawberry Jam and pre-MPP.

My first experience with Animal Collective was through word of mouth about MPP. I put it on during science class, I was put off by the opening sounds of In The Flowers, so I turned it off. MY REAL FIRST TRUE EXPERIENCE WITH ANCO was in September 2020 when I watch Middle8's video on how to get into the band. He played a snippet of Fireworks and I liked it, so I l listened to SJ. It took time but I liked it. Fast forward to February 2021 and I get hit by a winter storm. I heard a snippet of Brother Sport (the breakdown) and loved it. So, I dived back into MPP and loved it this time around. In March, I found Sung Tongs and really digged that. Finally in May, I just dove headfirst into everything. I've listened to most AnCo albums at this point. The new one is great and they have replaced Radiohead as my favorite band.
(I should add that Panda Bear's solo work on Person Pitch should be mentioned as a great add on to any fan of the band. A great solo album)
    Favorite: Feels

The first place I heard animal collective was at Lake Casitas, November 9th, 2018, in some secluded, forested area where a bunch of foos met up in the evening after school on a Friday, from across different friend groups, there were about a small classroom's amount of us. My friend had bought a strain of weed called white widow which is like super good. I was a late bloomer and had just started smoking weed so I opted for my other friend's home grown strain. He had fashioned a goofy looking, primitive, box-shaped pipe so we smoked out of that. My other friend came up to us and showed us the music video to floridada as the weed was coming on and we were just kinda entranced. One of my friends greened out and threw up and someone had to stay back with him into the night before he could have the strength to make the long walk back to the cars and my other friends had to star in our school rendition of the play Rise of Arturo Ui, which some of us proceeded to go see. The play was extremely hard to follow especially as we were high and the only thing I could think about was how funny it was that some of the cast members were high. But all that aside that night lives in infamy and Floridada is seen as a symbol of that night among friends.

Great video! I agree the best AnCo album for a new listener highly depends on their personal tastes and even mood at the time of listening. Strawberry Jam was the first album I really found on my own and it became my favorite album of all time (to this day), but I'm an all over the place dude, so your description fits.. haha.
Feels is their love album. I think all 4 of the dudes were in love at the time. Avey had married Kria Brekkan from the Band Mum (which they made an absolutely adorable/beautiful album together Pullhair Rubeye, though they released it with the songs reversed... just listen to the un-reversed versions, because that was kinda silly.. but at the time also sorta neat cause I felt like I had to reverse them myself to "unlock" the true songs). Panda and Geo were with their now wives as well, if I recall correctly. I think that was a major factor with the record.
Like I described in another comment, Danse Manatee is a "hauntingly beautiful" albeit experimental af album. I highly recommend listening to Meet the Light Child and following along with the lyrics. Essplode is also a fantastic song that got reworked into a section of Fireworks during some of their MPP era live shows. Literally my favorite "song" I've ever seen played live. Ahh Good Country is another hauntingly beautiful one on DM.
You need to watch ODDSAC! It's brilliant and musically a lot more similar to Strawberry Jam, but with like a psychedelic horror film vibe. A handful of the songs on that (visual) album I love listening to like any song off a traditional album.
Best god damn band of humans to exist!

    • @KyleReidMu
      @KyleReidMu  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Out of all their albums, Feels definitely makes me feel the most emotion so that it makes sense that they were all in love during the making of that album. Also, Avey releasing a whole album in reverse has got to be the most Avey Tare thing I've ever heard of lmao!
I definitely need to give DM more listens. I've only heard it a couple of times but I really enjoy the album. The last portion of Meet The Light Child with the "bah bah bah bah bah baaah" part is sooo beautiful. I felt like I was in a trance the first time I heard it.
I plan on watching ODDSAC soon. That's one of the only Anco projects I haven't dove into yet. That and Tangerine Reef. I might actually make a video about ODDSAC when I finally take the time to dive into it! I'm glad you enjoyed the video and thank you for such a detailed comment :)

  • @connors.8618

    Fuck yeah! Feels!
I think people all too often cite Strawberry Jam ad the best synthesis of their pop and experimental tendencies. I tend to agree, but I think Feels equally accomplished this but in different ways, sonically. While Strawberry Jam might be more approachable for some due to it’s rockist and occasionally post-punk adjacent hookiness, it may alienate others with it’s abrasive and darker sections. Feels, meanwhile, might better court folks that are into folkier, prettier music. I think it’s AnCo’s most conventionally beautiful and melodic record, but it’s quieter, more ambient sections might alienate those looking for more conventional song structures.

My first experience with anco was Floridada-- one of my friends in middle school showed it to me cause it was such a silly song but I loved the album so much! 6 years later and I'm still obsessed with the band. My love for the collective also got renewed with the recent release of Time Skiffs, one of their best albums yet. I really didn't like Tangerine Reef and Crestone that much, but that's the wonder of animal collective; like you said, they don't always play it safe. They still have all of the other albums and EPs that just can't get out of my head. Speaking of, you should do a follow-up video talking about their EPs and some of the albums made by the individual artists like PBVSGR and Sleep Cycle!

Back in January of 2009, 18 years old, taking public transportation from college back to my apartment that I rented at the that time with a couple good friends. I was reading The Onion, a satirical newspaper which was great at the time, it got a lot worse over the years, I haven't even read it in a long time, but back then it was amazing. Most satirical news things come up with funny headlines and then half-ass the actual articles, but everything about The Onion then was hilarious, most weekdays I'd read the whole thing, just about. The music reviews were one of the only things that weren't satirical. There was a review about Animal Collective's MPP, which had just come out. The reviewer was raving about it and something about it sounded different and interesting. The single at the time was My Girls, but just like you did with Sung Tongs, I ended up playing My Girls from the FULL ALBUM, and it benefitted me in the same way. I listened to My Girls and liked it, but wasn't really blown away, although I enjoyed its uniqueness. Then later, I listened again, but by starting the album from the beginning. In The Flowers, I really liked a lot, then My Girls I heard for a second time and liked it a bit more than before, but then Also Frightened came on and it slowly sucked me in and got me feeling things and hearing music in a way I hadn't before then. After years of being an AC fan, in retrospect I can say Also Frightened, although being great, wouldn't even make my list of top 20 AC songs, but it was the necessary bridge into their music that I needed, that My Girls wouldn't have been.
You saying what you said about Winter's Love going into Kids On Holliday, which made me think of my own experience, helped me realize how beneficial throwing on a full album can be. I bet that many musical lives have been changed by doing that, when one song finishes and another starts. When a Song Of Choice fades out and then you're unexpectedly hit by a Song Of Destiny.

  • @pizzarellayt

Throughout 2024, I've been listening to one Animal Collective album in chronological order every other Tuesday (unless I couldn't listen on Tuesday). Since I was going in chronological order, I had to start with Spirit. Since I care about my hearing, I had to turn down my volume on the opening track just so it wouldn't hurt as much, and I could barely hear the song. My initial opinion was that it was one of the weirdest albums I had ever listened to, and that the tracks got progressively better, and I also wasnt crazy about it. I recently revisited the album for the first time, and it's a lot better than I remember. Still not my favorite AnCo album, but better. Though I did listen to the remaster, which doesn't hurt my ears as much, especially on Spirit They've Vanished and Alvin Row since those two originally had the most painful examples of the tinnitus sound.
Anyways, my favorite albums are Feels and Strawberry Jam, though I don't have much time to listen to them again and rarely want to when I do have time. I also remember liking Centipede Hz, the most recent album of theirs I've heard. Really reminded me of 60s psych pop, and Rosie Oh specifically reminded me of Lemon Demon (which is not 60s psych pop).

My best friend in high school circa 2005 introduced me to AC via Who Could Win a Rabbit from Sung Tongs. I thought it was the weirdest thing I ever heard and didn't understand why she thought it was a fun song. But it somehow stuck in my subconscious and would play in my mind and I'd be like "wtf is this song in my head??" Thats how it's been with all my favorite bands. Don't think much of it at first but then days later they're stuck in my head and I have to figure out what the hell it is bc I suddenly think it's the best thing I've ever heard. It's weird how that happens. But thanks to my best friend my music taste went from terrible to amazing back in high school. This was back during the emo craze where everybody was listening to Fall Out Boy and Panic at the Disco and the like. Those were some funny times looking back.

I first found out of the band by stumbling across the song Bluish on TH-cam, to that time I read a manga with the same name. Well, I was reading the manga and young me was curious about it so I looked up several informtion about it on Google and TH-cam and then their song Bluish popped up. I clicked on it and really liked it, first it was a bi weird but then it really grew on me. So for years I really only listened to this one song of them but this year I visited a record store with my sister and randomly saw one of their albums, I read Animal Collective and remembered the song Bluish my younger self discovered, and then decided to just get the akbum. The album is Feels by the way.

The first time I heard both Strawberry Jam and MPP, I thought they were massively overrated, didn't really see the hype. Mostly stayed away from them because they just never interested me, until I checked out Time Skiffs when it came out. Loved it, heard it was a return to form and so I checked out all of their albums plus revisiting the ones I wasn't crazy about and they very soon became one of my favorite bands. Loved MPP (especially when not sober) and Sung Tongs the most, Feels and Strawberry Jam were amazing but I didn't quite see them on the same level, and Spirit They've Gone Spirit They've Vanished remains one of a very small number of albums I would say is flawless. Everything from the sound design to the musical compositions and ideas to the raucous performances, this album really opened my eyes and I was shocked that this was the one that connected and resonated with me, considering the first tones of the project are pure noise.

Needless to say it was NOT what I was expecting lmao. I just did not get it at all and it kinda went in one ear and out the other, I didn't think about it too much for a while after that. I also remember I had pirated Feels onto an iPod at some point and also just did not get that one at all?
Anyways it was only after developing my music taste more and getting into bands like Radiohead, The Flaming Lips, and Grizzly Bear that I finally *got* it. Feels has been comfortably in my top 10 albums ever since and I've been insufferable about music ever since lmao

I love all their albums and EPs (except Painting With lol but I probably will someday). Ark and Campfire Songs are my favorites, they both feel hypnagogic in very different ways. I used to not like MPP, I got into AC by SJ. Now I like them roughly equally, one more than the other depending on the day.
To me, Spirit is probably the hardest to get into just from the sheer amount of high frequencies. Melody wise I think it's actually one of their best. Alvin Row is in my top 3 songs of all time. I think the least melodic is either Ark or Hollindagain, the latter is certainly more jarring imo.
But if you really want to delve deep, listen to Animal Crack Box. That's them at their absolute rawest, besides some obscure live shows (which is mostly what ACB is)

Danse Manatee is a "hauntingly beautiful" album. Especially the song Meet the Light Child (read the lyrics while listening). Essplode is a great song and the way they reworked it and Lablakely Dress into Fireworks during some of their MPP era shows was absolutely the highlight of those shows (for me at least).
I agree it feels like they were playing around more with ideas and probably figuring out who they were as a band, but the album has a special place in their discography.
