  • Are there really any benefits to Edible Bird's Nest?
    In this episode a sick Mr. Lam explores whether or not Edible Birds Nest (EBN) has any scientific basis to its claims. This is the first episode in a short series aimed to unveil the science (or lack of science) in traditional Chinese Medicines (TCM).
    The short answer is that studies have been done that demonstrate increases B cell activation in mice fed EBN. Lab studies on simulated human skin also show a decrease in pigment formation, which results in whiter appearing skin. Feel free to help yourself to the long answer with the links below!

    EBN helped increase B cells in mice after subjecting them to intestinal damage, but not T cells

    Birds nest, like many supplements on the market, have a huge range in composition depending on what brand you buy from. The good ones are mainly glycoproteins and sugars

    Surprisingly, the short answer is that is could serve as an immune booster

    Very nicely made and researched and informative video. I started to drink bird's nest earlier this year and had some of my opinions based on my experience to share with you. Well, I wouldn't recommend anyone to buy bird's nest product from the bottles you held in the video or any other kind of bottled bird's nest product as they barely contain any bird's nest product. I myself have also bought several kinds of bottled ones before and I found out later that the bottles ones are really really a waste of money compared to the real one you made at home by yourself directly from dry swallow bird's nest. The soup is nothing like the bottled ones, no matter it's the smell or the texture. The soup doesn't have a gel-like texture but only the pieces of the strips. It has a strong egg white aroma to it when it's just made and hot. Later when it cools down you will only smell a tiny bit of that egg white scent. I don't know about the skin whitening effect on my skin as I'm already kinda pearl among Asians :). However I'm pretty sure that it has an immune system boost effect on my body. I feel much better in terms of adapting to sudden cold weather or flu season. I used to be sick and caught flu every time when temperature drops or flu hits. Well this year I don't think it's gonna happen. Temperature has just dropped from nice summertime's to a cold wintertime's (now below freezing point) within two days. I couldn't believe how sharp it dropped and many people around me caught cold or flu, but not me. I wouldn't be more happy to find out that I feel more energized at work than before. It does have a very good impact on me in terms of boosting my immune system as I can notice my change already just from drinking it every morning and night for a little more than half a year. That's why I'm here to find resources to support this good change in my life and thank you again for your wonderful video.

    I prefer to make my own bird nest syrup, I learn how to make it from my Chinese colleague way back when I was working in China, it was expensive though and take a lot of process. But it was really good

    I heard from a lady in the changi airport who was selling really high quality tcms that they actually boil the birds alive to produce small amounts of bird saliva. This is repeted for several birds to make the bottle worth amount you showcased. Really really cruel practice :'(

    • @theshortanswer7877
      @theshortanswer7877  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yikes that's a scary prospect! Don't be too alarmed though, the swiftlets are more valuable alive than dead. Birds nest is usually harvested from the caves where the nests have already been built. It's probably really annoying to the birds, but it's a better image than boiling the birds alive!
      See how they harvest here:

      Why would you kill the goose that lays golden eggs? The birds make them with their saliva why kill them. That claim doesn’t make sense. It’s expensive because it’s dangerous for the humans to get as it’s in caves and up the mountains.
