I have an old gerber from the 80's that the back spring had failed . Thanks to your video I remember their lifetime warranty . I sent the knife back to Gerber got a reply back very quick that they could not repair but instead gave me a generous credit . Couldn't not ask for better service. Thanks Cody for the video I wouldn't have remember their warranty without it

I have a broken Cable Dawg that broke first day on my job. It's retired and I hold it dearest to my heart. Yeah it was expensive, but I'll never send it in to be repaired. In training someone told me to buy the Cable Dawg, so my first tour it was my go to tool in Iraq. I lent it out so much, and used it so much I was in fear of losing it or having it break so by second tour I bought two more. I borrowed out my newer tool and it was gone. So I bought another after second tour. My original was still used day in and day out. Third tour was flawless and ran into the same guy that I borrowed my tool too, and he remembered me and gave the tool back. He remembered me because he bought his own Gerber Cable Dawg. Fourth tour was flawless. My new job after coming back, the orignal Gerber Cable Dawg broke. The same Gerber I bought before my first tour. I still have the other Gerbers, but I let the broken one retire as a memoir.

Ive used a gerber multi-tool for 20 years now, well 19 actually since I lost it once for a year. I found after a year in the yard when the grass was short. Not a bit of rust on it. I love that the pliers slide out for one hand operation.

I always viewed Gerber as having several levels of quality, the cheaper stuff is a real hit and miss, but overall they have good designs and mostly usable gear. I feel the fixed blades are typically better.

Thank you for your "no bs" videos! I've a set of Gerber cutlery...poultry shears, chef blades... I was sad they no longer offer that. I have a Gerber Multitool (slides out) but too heavy for pack. Friend showed me a fixed blade BenchMade and I fell in love with it. Of course where I live, fixed or folding blade can't be longer than your palm.

Still have the Gerber Mark 1 I bought in 79 and carried for 20 years in the Marines. Wish I still had the old vintage Gerber folder I had back then. Replaced it with an LST and still works for me. Made in the USA still means something. I wish I'd been there geeking thru that box of knives with you all. Semper Fi.

I kept waiting for them to find my tiny little knife in the bottom of the box. I work in an office and don't need a big EDC knife or multi-tool; I carry a Gerber STL 2.5 clipped on to my keyring with an S-Biner. It's small and light, super sharp and being all metal, wears well amongst the keys.

I'm in the market for a new knife (again) and stumbled across this video. I am an electrician/ power plant operator in the US Army and used a Gerber Covert folder for all sorts of electrical and carpentry tasks in Afghanistan (OEF 12-13). I came home and had it replaced under the warranty and am carrying it right now, in Afghanistan again. I try to inform my peers and subordinates about the importance of buying American and buying a quality item once and only once. Gerber even did a warranty replacement of the issued multi-tool the Army issued me in 2011. I can confirm that here in the Army, even my Leatherman Surge is a "Gerber".
I am replacing my EDC Gerber with a Benchmade but I will hold on to that knife forever (after I send it in one more time after this deployment). Good video.

I was issued a few different Gerber muilti-tools and I put them through their paces on multiple deployments. Never once had an issue with them. I have seen a few guys break a blade on multi-tools using it as a pry bar but I don't fault Gerber for someone using it as something that it's not. Now that I am out of the military I keep one in each of my vehicles, my tackle box, and believe it or not my kitchen drawer. I have also purchased a few to give as gifts to friends and family. Everyone who I have given one has loved it. I'm a Gerber customer for life although I can't see myself ever needing to purchase another one unless it's a gift because I have never had one fail me.

i use the Gerber multi tool for farming, EMS, SAR kit and WFF line gear. as for Gerber, I broke a pair of the first model multi tool. sent it back they sent a brand new model. outstanding tool and customer service. if you have input with Gerber, you should talk to them about a EMT/Firefighting multi tool. carbon glass breaker, heavy duty cutter for EMS clothing removal/seat belt, O/2 wrench, etc. leatherman's ems tool is being carried by many, many FF, EMT and Medics.

That was a really cool video. There is just something about a knife that speaks to the soul of the man that carries it. It truly is a part of you and something you come to depend on, day after day. You don't think about it much, you just reach in your pocket, grab it and cut what you need to, then away it goes. Its just always there and at the same time is one of the most cherished items a young boy, man or woman can own. Something passed down generation to generation. Man watching this video gave me the warm fuzzies.

The ones at WM are pretty much throw away knives, Gerber used to be the high mark of handmades there were only 2or3 descent knife companies out there. The price point for U.S. gerber is rediculous now. I'd rather carry Camillus or Kershaw.

Pawed through the knife shelf: Tekna, Buck (yeah, I'm old), Kershaw, Benchmade, a Ken Harsey design Lone Wolf, and Zero Tolerance - no Gerbers. The multitools are half Gerber (FD issue) and half SOG (purchased). My EDC multitool is an SOG Powerduo which is a knife with pliers, not pliers with a knife buried three operations down.

I have a drop point Gator in 154CM. Only time that knife has let me down was when I over tightened the bolt holding the blade, breaking it. Replaced it with some heavy duty bolt I found at home and the knife is holding up. I really do trust that knife and I am happy with it. I actually recommend it, especially if you live in the states and they are - compared to here in Sweden - pretty much dirt cheap.
I have yet to find another Gerber I'd like to spend my money on. Most of the Gerbers I see around looks like toys.

I have a couple of the hatchets. One has a nice bone saw in the handle and the shorter one has a small knife I like for delicate skinning.
I don't chop much wood with them, there are better solutions for that. I do love them for butchering though.
I have a beautiful carving set with 8 steak knives in a beautiful wooden box too. That has been around since the 70s. The steak knives are each pretty much exact copies of my old "Pixie" that I bought in 1976. Just missing the textured handle coating. I have a couple of Gator Folders like you made too!
    Count me as a fan...

Talking about balance of a knife, Col. John Eck said that a knife shouldn't have the tendence to fall out of ones hand, but into it.
So it never makes sense to look for a grip - blade kinda balance, the grip has to be more heavy anyway. You just have to look for the kind of blade - grip ratio you like.

Much like it did for Cody, this tour video vastly improved my opinion of Gerber. Its been difficult to separate the cheesiness of Bear Grylls from the rest of their product line but this tour adds a lot of insight for me. Heck, other companies have rebounded from marketing relationships with celebrities who have fallen from grace (ie: B Cosby, Jared from Subway) or in Bears case, who were simply sell-out pee-drinkers from the get-go. I do have Gerbers Vital pack saw which is great for cutting the pelvic bone on game animals and I also have their Vital skin & gut knife, though I've yet to use that one on any game animals. I'll be looking at their products more carefully, but not any with a Grylls label. Prior to this video I had been looking at the Strongarm as a nice design in a utilitarian blade that could be used for general tasks to save my hunting knife's edge for butchering.

Interesting to note that the U.S. Army issue Gerber multi tools, and the phrase is: "Throw me your Gerber". In my industry - Rock 'n' Roll the phrase is: "Anyone got a Leatherman?" This is from people that have to spend their own money on gear.
Started off with a Leatherman PST, which when I see one now seems ridiculously small. But it's lovely to see something still in use. Similar to the buzz Wranglerstar got from his grandad's knife. Had a Leatherman Wave, which I didn't like so I swapped it for for a Gerber with a pal .I'm. not sure what happened to that. As I said, I work in Rock 'n' Roll so I have some hazy memories of the past :)
I think I've had my Leatherman Supertool for 15 years or so.and it's a keeper. If I ever lost it I don't know what I'd replace it with as the company don't make them anymore.

I have 3 gerbers (multitools) and feel completely naked without one in my left pocket.
My first one was service issue and well "from my cold dead hands" comes to mind.
The other two are identical smaller civilian models (one of which is so loose that I need to send it in) and were both gifts.
All 3 are single hand operable and are much more practical than shoes.
Of the 3, two have saved lives on more than one account. They are truly indispensable.
Now as a civilian, I am a mechanic and a farmer and I use my gerbers daily.
I'm just waiting on the compact one hand version of the electrical tool for common DC electrical as apposed to cable to exist.
I can't speak to the knives as I've carried the same few Case's for years... That and I'll soon know how I feel about Gerber since the company changed. All my multis are original Gerber.
After more than 20 years, I managed to break the blade on my service tool so I'm trying to learn to trust it to the mail. May sound odd to be so attached to a multitool but it's been a part of me longer than some of my body parts.

To be honest I've never really looked at Gerber products. When I carry a pocket knife it was, and still is, a Case Stockman, or sometimes a Kershaw Skyline or Swiss Army Tinker. Multi-tools is a Leatherman. I've always thought of Gerber as the makers of those hooky looking Bear Grylls knives and other cheaply made knives I see at Walmart. Have you noticed you don't see Case knives at Walmart? I think Walmart has driven down the quality of a lot of products, knives included to get the prices down. Zebco fishing equipment comes to mind. I'll give Gerber a new look, as long as I don't have to look at those Bear Grylls knives.

Gerber = thumbs up. That said, just got a new Opinel yesterday; a number 8 stainless with olive wood handle. Twenty bucks. Can't wait for it to arrive. Like you guys said, knives are personal, you just find one that you like the feel and that performs best for you. Like my dad I have always been a Buck man but I also own Spyderco, Benchmade, Cold Steel...But for whatever reason the Opinels are just right for me and my uses; cutting line, opening boxes, shredding cardboard and of course food. I just find them to be a handy, affordable, comfortable knife. Maybe not for everyone, I get that...There were some nice Gerbers in that box. Especially the autos.

The coolest association I remember for Gerber comes the book "Fear and Loathing on the road to Las Vegas" by Hunter Thompson - they kept talking about this Gerber mini Magnum knife, with a blade so sharp you could slice your own thumb accidentally or something like that. They were using to cut up fruit to eat to with their Ether and Mescaline... anyway pretty cool reference, no idea whether that's a real knife or are they still make it.

Gerber has great customer service. I lost the clip on my 450 E-Z-OUT and I contacted Gerber and they sent me a new one, with screws obviously. I would get another Gerber knife. Your knife selection is a personal choice.

My first Gerber knife was a Magnum 600. At Fort Polk, Louisiana 1985 it opened a lot of first generation MRE's!!!

The reason everyone in the Army says "Hey man, hand me your Gerber." is because theirs is broken. That was by far the most fragile multi-tool I've ever used.

I was given a Gerber Gator as a gift about 10 years ago. It has help up and is one hell of a knife. I've bought some cheaper BG Gerber knives and have traded or given them away. Gerber fills in the cheap knife gap for kids and teens. As a adult I'll spend more for a cutting tool. I'm sorry but Leatherman is the only way to go for a multi tool. Great video. You're right there is no reason to hate on Gerber. They have good cheap knives. The Gator is one of them and you won't regret getting one...

Excellent video! I think its important for guys to get together and geek out on one thing or another. It gives us the ability to check out other gear and find out why it is important to the one who carries it.

I only have the Gerber multi-tool and just received a very small Gerber knife in a kit sold by Gerber, but have not used it yet. My regular survival knife is the Schrade brand which is nice and does what I want a survival knife to do. I also have a Old Timer and they are both full tang knives and full tang. Along with knives mentioned, I also have a Chinese made knife sold by one German company which is nice, a Buck knife, and a Japanese knife which is nice also and survival knives. I have as many knives as I have guns and I have too many of them since I don't hunt and have not in about a decade.

Did this take place before Mrs W bought you the new 940? I only ask because I'm a big fan of Benchmade and was so hoping you'd reach into your pocket and take it out in front of the Gerber guys.

Another great video. I have had several Gerber products over the years.....2 multi-tools, one from each deployment. One of the Gators like your wife got, it stays in my fishing tackle box. sharpens nice, but doesn't hold an edge for long. Over all, they are decent knives for the price. Definitely not a Benchmade

About 4 years ago, Gerber came to the wrecking yard where i worked in North Portland. They wanted to take some pictures for a ad for a new knife they were selling. They wanted to show a picture of several knives stuck in a car hood. They used just a knife blade and hammer to punch the holes in the hood. When they were done they gave out several knives to us and i got the plain unmarked blade they used to punch the holes.

I find it funny that you picked two drop point blades Wrangler at the end. We as practical knife people know a drop point blade is over all the most use-full. I wish more drop point blades and steels were available. But over all great video and well done even though I could sense some uneasiness on Gerber's reps part a couple of times. Which made me laugh. I am impressed that they really knew their blades. Awesome job on all peoples involved!

This is incredibly off topic for this video but I wanted to try to ensure you would get to see it, Wranglerstar. I just found a retailer that's got NOS Nicholson files that were made in the USA. They've literally got thousands of them in a variety of models. You may have to bounce between their website and Ebay page to purchase all the items at once but if you give em a call, they should be able to help with it. PS, nice choice of intro music. Now if only you could play the song for the men's department haha

Cody made a good point in the other video about their cheap knives. There is a market for them. Unfortunately they overshadow the good quality knives because they are the more prevalent ones in stores. I have been wanting to get the Strong Arm for years. It’s not like Gerber is trying to say that the Paraframe or any of their budget line is on par with something like a Spyderco. I think they are missing a significant market share but seem to be going after it with the recent Fastball.

Hell yeah, having had a mkII in L6 tool steel since 1986 and it has never let me down or my gator folder plus gerber multitool I can honestly say that the old ones are the best, same goes for the lst back in the late 80's, thanks for another great video, not all of us Brits like metric, I blame the French for that nonsense !!!
