His guitar playing is not perfect, and that's the beauty of it. It screams, it stutters, it has pain and effort. It's human.

Guitarists with their own personal style are the best.. I can listen to a handful of notes if it’s a unique player and ID them.. their soul/ feeling / technique comes through- Gilmore, Clapton, Neil, stills, lofgren, jimi, Garcia, Santana, knofler, Terry kath, all different all great.. btw - this lyric is so sad so historically accurate

Neil Young is The MAN. And ZUMA is one of his greatest albums. And "Cortez The Killer" is probably the greatest song on the album, a real story of greed and corruption and outright genocide.

Hernan Cortes was a Spanish Conquistador who led the unauthorized expedition in search of gold that became the downfall of the Aztec empire in the early 1500's. Also, "Cowgirl in the sand" for another extended guitar solo from Young.

Based upon this reaction, which I enjoyed a lot by the way, you've definitely got to listen to these two songs, Down By the River, and, Cowgirl In The Sand.
You really should brush up on Crazy Horse. Most of his output was with Crazy Horse, at least the famous stuff for the most part with some really amazing later solo work like this, and this went on for years and many albums but it was so good. I saw them live a couple times and both times were different but really really good.
Also check out the song Powderfinger, it is set in Civil War times but it is so powerful and it captures so much truth and emotion.

The main thing I love about Neil is he gives zero fucks about polish and perfection or what others think of his style, he plays from the soul, mistakes are opportunities, and the result is the result. You dig it or you don't, life rolls on.

As mentioned, the song is about Hernan Cortez and his destruction of the Aztecs. What is not often realized is that when Cortez was "encouraged" to come back home to Spain by King Ferdinand who feared that Cortez was becoming too powerful, he left behind his Aztec wife and their two small children. Thinking that she would be going with him and finding that he had abandoned them, she took her two sons to a nearby river and drowned them. Then realizing what she had done in her anger, she began to weep and scream. The Spanish word for "cry" as I recall is "lorrer" (yo-rehr). She is the source of the stories about the evil spirit known in Mexican lore as "la Lorrona" who haunts waterways and moans and cries and according to legend, drowns "kids who should be at home at night".
And the last four words of the song, "Cortez, what a killer..." give a more realistic view of the reality and true history of the tragedy of the Cortez expedition. I perform the song at most of my solo gigs and it's a favorite. You do great things, Biz, and I mean it.

Hernando Cortez was a real historic character, as was Montezuma, who was the leader of the Aztecs. Cortez was a Conquistador who came into what is now Mexico looking for Gold and other treasures for the Spanish King who sponsored his multi ship expedition. It did not end well for the Aztecs. 500 Spaniards wound up killing thousands and thousands of Aztecs with weapons and disease. Neil knew a story that needed to be told when he saw it.

The Cortez expedition was not sponsored by Spanish authorities. Cortez took it on himself and set out from Cuba. The governor of Cuba sent an expedition after him to apprehend him, but he managed to convince the people who had come to arrest him to join him instead.

I‘ve seen him five times: loud, electric sets full of feedback, acoustic sets, a country set, ….. Whatever his last album is, that’s what he plays, and he adds older songs in that style. Crazy Horse is his band for the last 50 years that he gets together every few years only when the spirit comes to him. He says you can’t force it. “Don’t spook the Horse.” He gets other bands together for other times: The Blue Notes, Stray Gators, Shocking Pinks, International Harvesters, Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young, … Most of his records are done in one take, maybe two… “Cinnamon Girl”, “Love To Burn” are electric, “Harvest”, “Helpless” are acoustic, “Out On the Weekend” and “Powderfinger”, which he plays every time along with “Needle and the Damage Done”, are a mix of acoustic and electric. Thanks!

This was a nice story and wasn’t cinnamon girl but it’s the music that transports. Here a bit on how Lou Reed found Danger Bird… Lou Reed considered the guitar playing on "Danger Bird" to be the best he had ever heard, stating "It makes me cry, it is the best I have heard in my life. I just said this on another post of this song, so no hate, just thought it worth saying here too. I usually do not like covers of iconic songs, it is so difficult to do them justice, I grew up listening to Neil Young and consider him one of the pioneers of the music I love. Also, I used to be one of those old guys that thought real music and musicians were long gone but this cover is just astonishing. th-cam.com/video/paeNnR33i5Q/w-d-xo.html -- the musicianship on this coupled with this song nearly always brings tears to my eyes and proved without a doubt that real musicians are still out there, they are just harder to find then when I grew up.
