Willingness to Make Amends

  • An important part of the recovery process is mending relationships with those we hurt while we were active in our addictions. The 12-Steps break this part of the process into two distinct parts. It is suggested that before we make amends, we must become willing to do so.
Where does this willingness come from for a person with a secular view of recovery? How do we become willing? What resources do we rely on to help us? There is often a need to forgive ourselves and others before we can make an amend, but as a secular person, there is nothing that mandates us to forgive. There is no religious teaching that compels us to do this. What is it that drives us to forgive ourselves and others?
Thank you, Jennifer, for suggesting the topic this week.
