      I want 35mm watch. Unfortunately most vintage watches on eBay which attract my eyes have 30-32mm size, that the reason I search for this kind of video. 😅

    To be honest there was a time when I thought a small watch just didn’t cut it. I usually go for a 40-42 mm piece. But upon acquiring and wearing my grandfathers 34mm 1960’s watch sure has changed my perspective. There’s just something very timeless and elegant about a nicely crafted small time piece.

      Large watches always look gaudy to me. Gaudy is the perfect word for it because they come off as tastelessly showy. It always just seems to me that the wearer is trying too hard especially when they have a small wrist. It's the equivalent of putting a massive lift on a truck so that it no longer becomes practical to use...sure you get looks but no one is looking because they're impressed, they're looking because it stands out tastelessly.

    • @veganbutcherhackepeter
      @veganbutcherhackepeter ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's the equivalent of putting a Hummer or other huge SUV on your wrist and trying to impress people with the sheer size of them. "Wow, look at how big that guy's watch is. He must be really cool, rich and important!"
      I mean, come on. It's ridiculous, it's cheap (no matter if the watch costs 6 figures) and it will only impress shallow bimbos.
      I am a sucker for vintage type dress watches. My favorite everyday go to probably is my 1968 Omega Constellation with a certified cal.564 chronometer movement. It's small, it's flat with a beautiful C-shape body and I get compliments on it all the time. And, above all else, after 54 years it still keeps the time exactly to +1sec/day. Now, if that's not manly then I don't know what is.

    • @salty-as-heck9915
      @salty-as-heck9915 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Depends on the type of watch. Certain sports watches and aviator watches probably still look great as big as 42mm, but for a dress watch or casual watch a better size is probably between 35mm to 39mm. Below 35mm for men probably looks odd unless it's a vintage or the guy has very small wrists. While I've never passed on a modern watch for being too small (as the smallest are typically around 36mm), I've definitely passed on buying a modern watch I otherwise liked because I thought it was just too big. I can't bring myself to buy a dress watch bigger than 39mm, and while I'd go as big as 42mm on a divers/sports...they'd have to really have a wow factor for me personally to want to go that big.

    Great video Jory and actually today I have changed the watch strap on my newly purchased vintage 34mm Ingersoll watch and will quite happily be wearing it tomorrow to work. Think there is an initial shock when you first put on a smaller watch when you aren't used to it, and it does make you a little self conscious about it. But that literally lasts a few mins and I personally now am more than comfortable wearing a smaller watch than I used to be. You just have to try it.. I like small watches however for practicality's sake as a pilot anything less than 35mm is a little too small and compromises legibility in the cockpit. The SARB033 is currently my smallest and the smallest I am willing to use for flying. For flying all my watches are 45mm or above for legibility.

    I wish smaller watches worked for me! I love vintage pieces but most are well under 40mm and on my 8.5" wrist and 6-2 frame they look weird on me. Add the frustration of being old enough to need reading glasses i generally cant read small watches. About 41 or so is as small as I go. my sweet spot is 44mm. I agree that there is nothing wrong with small watches if you wear them.

    I think it depends on the shape of the watch, too - rectangular watches can have a smaller width and still look ok, and likewise small watches with relatively long lug-to-lug sizes (like the Hamilton Khaki Mechanical) can look ok despite their small width. That said, size is a matter of fashion, and like other commenters have said, the examples you used wore watches that, while small by today's standards, were just normal size in their day. I guess if enough people (or the right people) start wearing and promoting smaller watches we'll see a sea change, but as things stand today a 36mm watch on a (using myself as an example) 7.5 inch wrist looks odd or slightly comical, or "worse" (to a certain kind of insecure man), feminine. Even the 37mm Seiko 5 I'm wearing takes some getting used to after wearing 40mm+ watches, and even more so after my G-Shock GA-800.

    Well I have a small automatic Swatch from 1995 that I wear sometimes. 36.7 mm and it feels tiny. Otherwise I prefer 40-43 mm range. Just feels more substantial on my average sized wrist.

    I like the feel of smaller watches on the wrist and in a way they are more comfortable but it does seem a little strange sitting next to a girl on the tube (subway) who is wearing a dazzling 42mm watch when I am wearing a 36mm Seiko 5. I just feel a bit too ‘old school’.

    Larger watches (30-44mm) are my sweet spot purely because they're easier to see for older eyes (48y) .Anything smaller I can't check the time at a glance, anything bigger - tho more legible- gets hit on doors/tables etc more often & looks comically big on my 7 1/4" wrist. Wear what works for you, for whatever reasons. Love that Bubble back 😘 Cheers Jory 👍👍

    Thoughts? Just a thought? Seems a lot of people find the orient bambino too large to be a "dress" watch. I didn't know they made the bambino in "women sizes". Along with other models that could pass as unisex???
    Thoughts on men wearing "women" watches.

    7.5" wrist here and the Seiko SNKs and a 40mm Sub homage I had (an Invicta, 😱❗) are what I had felt the most comfortable so far... not that my SNZG and Sea Urchin are not a good fit, those smaller cases just feel better in my wrist...

    6ft tall, 7.75 inch wrists, seiko skx007 fits the bill for being the most comfortable watch I have ever worn.
    Yes I can pull off bigger watches and I did get sucked in by the oversized watch fad too.
    No more big watches for me, classic, proportionate, and understated works best!!!

    Wearing a watch is not about compensating. It's all about enjoying a nice time piece for yourself. I like to wear my little Marathon general purpose field watch or my all white Swatch.

    For me a "man's watch" is the type of watch my dad had and is the type of watch I wear everyday, not because of size, but because I'm reminded of him, of his love, of his teachings and the way he carried himself in the world with honour. He was tough, but also a gentleman and a protector of his family.
