I got my first Rolex in the early 1990's. A reference 14000 Air-King. It was a 34mm cased workhorse. Kept accurate time and it was easy to read .... day & night. When I started out collecting it was 1940's military watches both issued and private purchased. The standard size was 28.5mm. Pilots, infantry, takers and sailors all wore them and they were quite effective. It was a blessing when 42mm and 46mm watches caught on because the prices on the small watches came down.
This Mathey-Tissot is a gem. Reminds me of my old Air-King!

We do have smaller watches on the market. I'm wearing a 34mm new model Seiko right now. It's readily available, too. The secret is it was in the women's catalogue. This is the SSA785, but there's plenty of others. Essentially it's the same as the 40,5mm SRPB41 blue moon cocktail time but with a 33,8mm case, no date and a circular open heart. Also 260€ cheaper at my retailer... 😉 I did change the blue strap for a brown one though.

Hi Jase, I recently purchased an old school tag heuer formula one chronograph ca1212-1. It's 38mm and it wears great on my 7 1/2 inch wrist. I have various watches from 38mm up to 46mm but I have to say , I do now prefer 40mm and lower. My grail was always a orange bezel omega planet ocean in 45mm , but now I can afford one, I won't ever get one, because overall they are too bulky and thick, even though they do a smaller version now. I think that's the reason behind rolexes success, they design a tough watch, but always remain elegant but simple in design. I'm not sure if I could pull off a 34mm , maybe 36mm is my limit.
That looked good on your wrist, and looked bigger than the size suggests. Norwich are bouncing back in style, fair play to them, but I'm a leeds fan , so hoping to avenge the 4-3 loss to the reds , unless your a toffee ?

I’ve got a couple of old Seiko 5s which are on the smaller side and I’ve got to say, I really like them. I get they aren’t for everyone but I get used to the smaller wrist presence really quickly. I’d definitely recommend people give smaller diameter watches a go.

You need to look at the Smiths explorer homage at 36mm. Google Time Factors. They are UK based. A bit of a bump up from this pricepoint though. They tend to use Miyota 9000 series automatic movements.
If you want to dig deeper, and you like military watches, consider the VAER A12 which will be forthcoming in 36mm handwound (ETA 7001) swiss made with 20mm lugs, just about the same dimensions as the old Rolex 1016 explorer. This watch is a dirty dozen homage, with 100m WR.

Hmmmm very weird the 34 case! Back in the day it was the AirKings you could get in that size.
Not a huge one for homages myself however a great comparison would be the Smiths Everest 36mm . The brand name has a bit more gravitas to the time the Explorer came out and of course a Smiths watch aswell as a Rolex was worn by Norgay and Hillary up Mount Everest ! But you’d need to find an owner of one as those are hard to review I gather! Take care matey

I dunno, I've had a pretty underwhelming experience with Mathey Tissot. I bought a Mathy I Auto back in January, and I'm pretty sure they did zero QC checks on that watch, which was pretty surprising for a watch with "Swiss Made" on the dial. One of the lugs has a small but noticeable indent, the dial (which is the centerpiece for the watch) has 4-6 small black specks of trash on it (which really contrasts with the ice blue dial, which is why I noticed it straight away), the dial has a few smudges/scratches on it, the applied text wasn't finished properly (there's a bit of metal leftover from the molding process on the "o" in "automatic"), the lume was shockingly bad (looks like they used low quality lume tape, which not only is very weak and unevenly applied with dark spots, it's not stuck onto the applied indicies straight. The lume was so bad at first I assumed it didn't have any.) Also, the bracelet was pretty cheap feeling with hollow end links, I didn't bother sizing it, I just put on a silver seatbelt nylon strap I had lying around.
And the worst part is, if it didn't have these QC issues, it would've been a beautiful watch. The ice blue dial, even as tarnished as it is on my example, shines with elegance in sunlight. And the STP 1-11 movement inside is highly finished and runs quite well (after hacking it to my gravitymaster GShock, it seems to run at about +5 secs a day). It's also not cheap enough to simply throw away, I've passed my return window, and I'm probably not going to have an amazing time trying to sell it with all the defects this watch has.
So yeah, Mathey-Tissot gets a dissapointed yikes from me. This one's gonna languish in the corner of one of my watch boxes for eternity most likely.

Marlon Brando (The Godfather) wore a Rolex 31mm and nobody would have called him feminine (even though there was that strange Larry King interview). Nice watch but I have a lot of concerns...
Mathey-tissot has history, right but now belongs to an obscure po box wholesale company (Swiss Watches Partners SA) registered in 2013, does not have any manufacturing in Switzerland. With only contact possible through email under another site name info@almonds.ch. With no terms and conditions on their website... Already kind of so-so...
They mention a mouvement 'pesuex' which doesn't exist, there used to be a 'peseux' (note the swap of letters) ébauche manufacturer in the 1930s, but this went through all kind of different companies and now is under ETA umbrella. The brand pesuex does not exist nor tge real one peseux sell any movement.
I smell the Chinese factory using false claims and history of an old recognized brand, to sell some unknown product at a higher price...
Don't take me bad I enjoy Chinese watches (SanMartin, Heimdallr, steeldive...) just always run away from those trying to hide behind obscure relation with an old brand... Big bell ringing nononono.....

What a beautiful watch. It is the exact size that I would want but I am turned off by the auto movement.
It is 2022; why are people obsessing over mechanical watches? Nobody was wetting themselves for mechanical watches a decade ago. If they pine for the past why are they not wearing waistcoats so they can ditch the feminine wrist watches and have a manly pocket watch. The sooner this fad dies out the better.
Seiko produce the VH31a movement which would have been a perfect fit for this watch and would have enabled them to reduce the thickness to 9mm.

I collect watches. I build a few and I fix a few. To go down so low in size as to be 1950 or so is confussing. Today watches are jewelry more than important time keepers. Everyone has a cell phone for time and date keeping. So why wear a watch? No why wear something so small it is not noticed? Now that is the point.

Warning information about this movement :
Wanting to get to the bottom of things (peseux being operated by fhp1923, a legal consulting company registered in 2020 with 50k swiss francs, which address is just over a steakhouse and Mathey-Tissot, operated by SWP Swiss Watches Partners SA, founded in 2013 a watch wholesaler, and being all over the place with their movement descriptions and pics on their internet site even showing IT20 movements from a company that bankrupt in 2017...)
I requested some further proof from mathey tissot about this movement, proof of production in Switzerland and their SIP number which is a mandatory mark each swiss made watch/movement must have.
Their reply is more than ambiguous
'' Our company is in contact with Swiss Watch Federation since few years, but every step is well known and agreed with Swiss Watch Federation.
We are actually working to produce new movements, and we will send them soon to the Swiss Watch Federation for approval and validation. The internet site is actually closed, as we wish re-novate it with the new movements.
    ...
Our company purchase swiss components mainly from the french side of Swiss, and assemble in the Canton of Ticino.
About the SIP, the Swiss Watch Federations wrote us: “Confidentiality: SIP code is confidential and can’t be disclosed to third parties.''
    Signed FHP 1923 S.A. Grand’Rue 27 CH2034 - Peseux. Switzerland
    Tel : +41.22.548.12.00
Peseux is in canton de Neuchâtel.
The phone number is the official number of the company solaraqua.ch which milk another brand T. HEATON. And operated by AM Mobility LLC. A comercial intermediate which is in canton de valais.
They also included their 'technical diagrams that mentions 28 jewels and 36h power reserve, while they stipulate 44h on their internet site.
For info the only 2 eta 2824-2 clones with 28 jewels are :
    Liaoning Peacock SL3000, and
    Sea Gull TY2130
Now again this is all very suspicious and disturbing, you do what you want with all this!

34mm perfect watch size .... ummmm no .... 40 or 42mm perfect on me ... I can get away with 38 to 44 without looking ridiculous ... especially on my 7.5 inch wrist.
Will it fill the gap and work for those with smaller wrists yes. I do have a 34mm watch btw, my vintage JLC, but because of the size it does get limited wrist time, especially with a larger collection.
On a side note I've heard many comments by reviewers and subscribers saying they are getting tired or watches with NH35 movements .. however I can add that in additon I am personally getting tired of watches with Mercedes hands .. so many other options out there I wish even budget watch companies would mix it up more.
